* The Syrian government is busy slaughtering the citizens of six cities.

* The President has spoken on the Trayvon Martin murder. Among other remarks he said, “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon. I think they are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves and we’re going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.” Let's hope so, Mr. President, let's hope so.

* Today they charged the man who killed all those Afghan civilians in the middle of the night.

* Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell wants you to know that anyone who objects to forcing women to pay for their government ordered medical rape is "playing politics." After all, no one could have genuine ethical objections to what he's doing, right? *side eye*

* Using the same blame the victim logic that is often turned against rape survivors, Geraldo Rivera is claiming it's Treyvon Martin's fault he got shot for wearing a hoodie. No, Mr. Rivera, there are no clothes that justify assault and murder. I think it's interesting that there exists footage of Mr. Rivera himself wearing a hoodie in public. Was he hoping someone would shoot him at the stadium? I think not. I don't wear hoodies because I hate wearing anything on my head, but a vast majority of people under 50 wear them regularly. Is Mr. Rivera intending to justify mass mueder on college and high school campuses on the grounds that a majority of student were them when it's too cold for just a tee shirt and too hot for a real coat? I think not. It seems to me that blaming the victim is exactly the wrong way to approach murders. The victim is not asking for it by wearing a hoodie. The blame needs to fall squarely on the man who chose to stalk and shoot an unarmed teenager and the police department that decided not to follow procedure or actually investigate.

* There was a man in line ahead of me today who looked very much like my first black belt all grown up. I managed to restrain myself from leaning close and sniffing him, but it was hard. If he had smelled like that, I could have picked it up at that distance anyway. I know that intellectually, but still I distracted myself by talking to the Vietnam vet behind me, so as to prevent myself staring.

* It was warm enough to take the black cats on a quick explore of our patio area. The Butt is likely going to be a problem, so he's on leash only for this spring at least. It was a touch too cold out of the sun, but they did enjoy their little explore.

* I have fallen deeply in love with The Girl who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne Valente. The prose is poetic and charming, the logic of it perfect, and the story captures something I can't quite put into words. I want to grab people and thrust a copy at them, but I am better mannered than that.
