Mar. 18th, 2012 04:00 am* It turns out that Republicans are blocking reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act because they are in favor of violence against Native American women, immigrants, and people in same sex couples, for whom the Democrats what to extend help and protections. Republicans are claiming that protecting these folks counts as "politicization." Riiiiight. The Republicans also want you to know that protecting women from domestic violence is a fundamental assault on marriage. I mean, if a woman can leave her abuser, that's a violation of religious freedom. Republicans are also arguing that protecting women and gay people from domestic violence is an expansion of government and therefore a loss of freedom for real Americans. (IE the abusers, though they don't say that bit outright). No really, some of them are framing it that way. After all the right of a person to beat zir wife, husband, girlfriend, boyfriend, and/or children is one of those fundamental rights we should be protecting, right? Aaaaargh! Can they even hear themselves talk?
* I think I failed to mention the tornadoes in Michigan and environs this week. Honestly, I was so horrified by how cruel the CNN reporter was to a widow of the storm that I simply failed to frame any appropriate response. Christ on a candlestick, Lady, her husband died a couple feet from her a few hours previous, what sort of monster lays a guilt trip on her on national TV? Being speechless with horror and fury, I failed to catch the reporter's name, but she was exhibiting a Wolf Blitzer level of douchebaggery and lack of empathy. I suppose that means she'll go far with CNN.
* I think I forgot to mention, Rick "Man on Dog" Santorum is campaigning to abandon porn. Of course. *facepalm*
* Melissa Harris Perry on the murder of Trayvon Martin for the crime of being a black teenager walking home at night. Remember, in Florida, a bag of skittles now counts as a weapon so dangerous, you can shoot teenagers on sight for carry one and expect no arrest or consequences: http://video.msnbc.msn.com/melissa-harris-perry/46419672#46769325
* Doing the numbers on voter suppression: http://video.msnbc.msn.com/melissa-harris-perry/46419672#46769415
The segments that the above was the intro for are worth watching as the NAACP mission to the UN is fascinating in themselves, but to long to link here.
