gwydion* Remember how the Republicans illegally purged Democratic voters from the Florida voter rolls to fix the 2000 presidential election? They are taking that strategy National targeting Latinos, Democrats, and Independents. This includes a 91 year old decorated WWII veteran who can't understand why his country is so ungrateful:

* Today was exhausting, but productive. During the mid-month emergency, I pulled out money from my stretch IRA (with penalties). I promptly blew it on things like bills and cat meds. I just spent the last of it on bills needing paying in person and a few perishables. The forage line was two hours long, but it was good foraging for once. At the end was a clump of high school volunteers. As I was packing and organizing, I couldn't help but overhear them. They were making jokes about "Gypsies" who they believed were fictional. I know it's impolite to interrupt, but what with the constant repetition of the racial slur and the obvious ignorance, I just snapped into teacher mode. It did it much as I would have at the Middle School, in a calm, informative tone. I said something like, "You may not know this, but "gypsy" is a racial slur. They are called Romani. They are real people. Many of them died in the Holocaust." (The last bit was aimed at why they might have the impression that they didn't exist. I know, not ideal, but it was the heat of the moment). They made the wide eyed faces that used to greet my "Why we never say 'faggot'" Speech. As I hobbled away, I could hear more productive conversation. I know, I know, interrupting people to tell them they are saying something racist is rude, but in their place, I'd rather someone tell me, than let me go on being ignorant and offensive.
