May. 27th, 2012 05:36 am* In Egypt, voters are being given a choice between a Mubarak crony and a man who wants to impose Islamic law. Most Egyptians want neither. It's going to be ugly. Basically, there were too many splinter parties and fragmentation among the moderates wanting secular government. It's heartbreaking.
* Memorial Day speech by Joe Biden. Bring tissues: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#47572971
I never much liked Joe, but suddenly, I do.
* When I hear Mitt Romney out advocate cutting money for public schools, I get angry all over again. Imagine if just once, for say a decade, we decided to fund every school in the US the way we fund the public schools for the upper middle class. Imagine if we gave every child in the country the chance to do actual experiments in science class and the chance to reead modern, well written textbooks. Imagine if every student in every class had a chair and a desk. Imagine if the roof didn't leak and the pipes didn't clang, and there were enough lockers, pencils, and computers.
Sure, it wouldn't solve problems like the students in the poorer districts sometimes coming to school hungry, or was the case now and then with my kids where they didn't know where they were sleeping that night. Sure it won't solve the kid who can't concentrate because zir stepdad's out of jail and ze's scared for zir mother and sister's safety. Sure it wouldn't solve the concentration of kids with learning issues or limited English getting concentrated in certain skills in places with caps on funding for remediation, but it would be a big start to make sure every student got to go to a school that isn't crumbling, that has enough supplies, and enough teachers. Imagine how much better off we'd all be as a country if just once we didn't deliberately starve the schools with the most need of the funds we give freely to schools for the middle class.
Just saying.

(New readers: Marine Rob is a Corvallis period friend, the last of them left. We append the "Marine" because there used also to be a Tank Rob and that saved confusion.)
