* What is our legislative response to the BP Oil Disaster? Not only has there been no new safety regulations passed, but we are on the verge of passing a law to remove all financial liability for future spill from oil companies, thus encouraging more corner cutting and yet more and bigger disasters since there will be no punishment at all for future disasters. The goal is to shift all the costs of clean up on the tax payers along with all the risks, while the benefits all go to what is already the most profitable industry in the history of world. It means that next time there is a major spill there will be no pay outs for those who lose their livelihood, nor for the medical costs of exposure related illnesses such as birth defects, rectal bleeding, respiratory damage, and dementia. After all, those are problems of mere humans, and corporate profit should always trump the human costs, right? *sideye*

That's right, our Federal government looked at the BP oil spill and decided that the problem was not a lack of tough enough standards for things like shut off valves, but that we are making oil companies take responsibility for their spills.

* Republicans, feeling there isn't nearly enough extreme poverty in the wake of the economic disaster caused by their policy of deregulation are using a farm bill to dramatically cut EBT/food stamps. After all, half of ebt recipients are children, and depriving them of nutrition will make it harder for them to learn and to grow up healthy, thus increasing generational poverty.

* I went back to bed and tried to sleep, but Hector kept howling me awake. I ended up finishing Deathless instead. It was intense, and clever and hit me in all sorts of very personal ways. I clearly am going to have to read it again a bunch of times, but not just now. I need time to ponder and digest, preferably when my head is not full of mucus and the queasy is over ruling even my cancer grade regimen of anti-nausea drugs.

* The Wire, Season 5: I'm three episodes in and loving the news room character designs and the way it fits so beautifully into everything. I want to smack McNulty upside the head even more than usual. honestly, I do not understand how he gets women to sleep with him, let alone want relationships. This downward spiral is ugly, ugly, and there were better ways to solve things. Sigh. I want to smack Carcetti too. Bubbles breaks my heart, but he alwys does. That thing at the end of the third episode? Ouch.

* Am I the only one having trouble telling the furry species in Grim apart? Like, I can tell when they match, but really, I can't tell what they are mean to be.

* I am in the mood for fresh baked bread, but that's a huge amount of work and I lost both good bread recipes in the move. I have eggplant, but everything I could make with them involves more standing than I could manage. I want fresh fruit and forbidden cheese or butter on that fresh from the oven bread I'm not making. Sigh.

I love the way BP tries to overhaul its image by presenting commercials ( paid for by, BP LOL) that the gulf area it polluted and destroyed is still a 'really cool place to go'. Except for the OIL SPILL, yes, it's still a 'cool place' to be. Wonder if BP helped all those people out of work to find new jobs for what they lost because of the spill?!
