Mar. 14th, 2012 05:23 am* The Syrian government is barring the Red Crescent from shipping in humanitarian aid. They claim that despite all evidence to the contrary, it's not needed. I am of the opinion that they think the genocide will go faster if you don't ship in medicine and the last thing they want is respected outside observers seeing the murders.
* Alabama: Santorum 35%, Gingrich 30%, Romney 28%, Paul 5%. Mississippi: Santorum 33%, Gingrich 31%, Romney 30%, Paul 4% Hawaii: Romney 45%, Santorum 25%, Paul 18% Gingrich 11%. American Samoa (Where they held the caucus in a bar. O.o): Still wasn't in when I decided I can't wait anymore for bed. Delegate Count: Romney: 476, Santorum 246, Gingrich 131, Paul 47. Missouri is next, followed immediately by Puerto Rico, then Illinois.
* Yes, Gingrich and Santorum are splitting the Evangelical vote, but I think it's a battle of prejudice really. Gingrich has gone hard after the racist vote, while santorum has pushed just as hard for the homophobe vote. (Paul is a racist, of course, but he no longer campaigns on it. Similarly he is a misogynist and a homophobe, but he doesn't go out of his way to mention it). They are splitting the misogynist vote, of course, though santorum has a Rush Limbaugh endorsement and a stronger "women aren't bright enough to make their own health care decisions" message against Gingrich's more personal misogyny and general belief that women aren't full citizens. For some people that's all a struggle, and some are more strongly one or the other. Yes, there's a heavy overlap with the Evangelical community in the South, but there are folks who vote their racism over their homophobia and vice versa. There are also racist/homophobes/misogynists who are not evangelicals and vice versa. This primary really strikes me as a race to the bottom.
If you think there isn't a racial element in this primary and the upcoming general election, consider that 97% of the folks voting in the 40% Black state of Mississippi are white. White evangelicals made up 80% on today's vote in Mississippi. Numbers are similar for Alabama. Still, it looks like Homophobia/Misogyny just barely managed to trump racism this time. Seriously, the vote was close in both states. I Mississippi it was 31/31/31 for hours.
The South terrifies me. Yes, I know this shit goes on everywhere. (Remember my postings on PNW white supremecists?) Still, the mess of fucked up backwardness that comes out in elections down there makes me terribly sad for my country.
* Mitt Romney vowed Tuesday, "Planned Parenthood: we're going to get rid of that." The Republican pro-cancer agenda marches on. I'm guessing he figured he wasn't quite misogynistic enough to compete for the average Republican voter.

I repeat, they are disenfranchising a couple million folks in Texas (most of them POC) for the sake of a .0003 risk of the kind of voter fraud the measure will prevent. (Or a total .0004 risk of all voter fraud). Tell me that's not about race. Go on.
* Oh, there was another round of arrests in England over the Rupert Murdoch phone hacking thing, mostly centering on interfering with police investigation, but also involving the mistreatment of an improperly lent police horse which David Cameron happens to have ridden while visiting a defendant. No really, go look it up.
