I'm exhausted. way too little sleep and lots of walking. I was moderately successful as errands today. I ended up going to the new Pickford Cinema branch to see the Artist and Tinker, Tailor. the seats are actually comfortable! I need to renew my membership, but that has to wait until next month. (The Pickford is our non-profit art cinema. They raised enough money for a new, gorgeous theater so they can show more films). Running the Artist in a theater named after Mary Pickford is particularly apt, I think. I really liked it, by the way, but I am a sucker for that sort of detail in set design, lighting, costuming, and performance style. It does exactly what I wanted it to as a film, if that makes sense. My Tinker thoughts and reactions are more complex, and I'm to tired to sort them out, honestly. I got mobed by cats when I got home and Hector clearly needs more psych meds. I'm likely going to crash way early and not even try to catch up on news and lj until tomorrow.

"Mobbed by cats when I got home" I love it!! When I had three cats they would come running. LOL

How was The Artist? What was your opinion of it? I'm curious to see it myself.

They all come running and circle like sharks until they all are reassured the clowder is intact.

It was very meta. It's talking about an era in the medium of that era which can get a little tricky. It is brilliant if you know enough about early Hollywood and all the ways they are referencing various stars that they combined to make one story; I think it would play just fine if you don't. Because of the structure, style, and nature of silent films, there are certain limits to what they can do, and a whole lot of stories they simply can't tell. I think it does what it does beautifully, if that makes sense.

oh, I am so glad you liked The Artist. I am giving serious thought to seeing it again in the cinema, I was totally blown away by it; I really have a sweet spot for stories of positive friendship where the option of turning into romance is clearly there and does not happen, and I was so impressed by the nightmare sequence.

The nigtmare sequence blew me away even though I guessed right away what was going on. It was so effective given the state the movie's style puts you in. I'm not a silent film expert, but the history interests me and i grew up watching them. Call me an informed amateur. Anyway, I think it's just right, the way form and function served each other so beautifully here. They caught the texture of the movies and that time in the film industry in a way that other formats couldn't. It really is terribly clever.

I too liked how it wasn't really about romance though there was romantic tension.

I am so glad i got to see it in a theater before it goes away.
