Feb. 14th, 2012 05:06 am* There is serious talk of criminal charges against Rupert Murdoch et al over here under the "Foreign Corrupt Practices Act." There is also some talk of properly investigating the hacking, bribery, etc. around the News Corp coverage of 9/11.
* It occurs to me that the Republican argument that Catholic Universities should be able to deny people access to insurance coverage is essentially the same as saying Mormon Employers can forbid employees from using their compensation to buy tea, coffee, and caffeinated sodas, or arguing Jewish employers can prevent employees from buying pork. It's all compensation, after all. Do we really want to decide that Employers can tell employees what they can do on their own time, because that is what the Republicans are proposing, hat the Religious convictions of the better off trump the religious convictions and basic freedoms of workers. I think this is why this is pissing me off so much.
* I want to thank John Stewart for illustrating how fucked up and hypocritical right wing claims that 1. they are persecuted in the US and 2. The religious beliefs of employers to discriminate should override the rights of employees to access to health care. 3. Providing people with health care is the material and moral equivalent to Hitler rounding up Jews. It's nice to see someone is appropriately outraged.
* I am really not okay with intense paparazzi or stalkerish regular news coverage of the children of celebrities. That goes double after a death whether it's Micheal Jackson's kids or Whitney Houston's daughter. Yes, it's legal, but I thinks it's a crappy thing to do. May I add, fuck you CNN.
* The cats got an extra goosh ration after the catnip orgy was over. Everyone except Hector has forgiven us the flea meds. It turns out that Mache will gladly eat the medicated treats, something that was not the case on past occasions with other medicated treat brands. Yay, medicated treats she will eat!
* While I was out, I noticed the lumber was all gone from under my window. I can still spot a rotted railing segment and support pillars needing painting, but I have hope they might be nearly done with the really loud renovations. *fingers crossed* The cats and I can't sleep properly with all that happening right outside my window.

* I spent the evening falling down the youtube music hole, and came up with the version of "In the Pines" I grew up with. It turns out it really was the legendary Lead Belly, which is so like my parents and can't even explain it to you. It was on the same mix tape with the Van Ronk I quoted earlier, and as a toddler-elementary school kid, I did not grasp that they were different people, which accounts for my shock earlier this evening when I discovered the "Tell Old Bill" guy wasn't an elderly Arican American bluesman. Seriously, I kept thinking, "This can't be the right guy, but it totally is." Mystery solved. http://youtu.be/nst1iEhak0U
