* Watching Aidan Gillen play Carcetti (with an impeccable accent, I might add) just underlines how clever they were to cast him for Little finger. It would be so easy to play Little as a deadly serious two note. Instead he brings all this lively nuance he spent all that time practicing as Carcetti

* When I was a kid, we watched Soap as a family when it was new. It now comes with an "adult drama" viewer discretion warning. Who back in the 1970's would have guessed the 21st century would be so much more prudish.

That show really was such a mix of groundbreaking and massive, irredeemable fail. Often in the same scene. Want an example? Conversation between Jodie and his pro-football player boyfriend about the stress of living in the closet completely without any of the camp endemic in 1970's gay minstrel show stereotypes and massively embarrassingly ignorant trans fail in one scene. Do not even start me on the hot mess they have going when it comes to race or sexual politics.

It's such a weird artifact of it's time. It could have been so much better in so many ways, yet I do not think you could do anything close to what they were aiming for and often missing now.

We didn't watch Soap very often in our house, but looking back on shows like M*A*S*H*, Barney Miller, etc. the age of the comedy willing to tackle tough social issues is long gone.

At least in sitcoms it isn't, alas!
