Jan. 19th, 2012 12:47 am* Wait, Rick Perry told South Carolina they should lead a war against the federal government and they all cheered? Can they have forgotten how that turned out last time? Sigh. We've known he was secessionist, but I admit to some surprise that he's reminding people of that now.
* I'm still looking for words to express how disgusting it was that the Republican Presidential candidates were out appropriating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s name and legacy, claiming that he would side with them on things like abolishing the social safety net and public schools when those are the opposite of what he was fighting for at the time of his assassination, while at the same time spouting racist rhetoric. It's just squicky.
* Sarah Palin endorsed Gingrich. One of Gingrich's wives has given and interview, and folks are fascinated to see if she comes out with anything career ending. Remember, "Family values" means always leaving your wife for a younger model if she gets sick.
* It looks like the SOPA protests are having and effect. The House version got slow tracked. Today, under an avalanche of pressure, most of the Senate backers are backing out, including two cosponsors. The President is siding with the protesters here.
My thanks to Sen. Ron Widen of Oregon for fighting so strong and hard for stopping this. Shame on the Democrats still supporting it.

* The President has said they aren't doing the dangerous Keystone Pipeline. Republicans claim that we should still do it despite the massive danger to the Mississippi and farmland because a net loss of 1000 jobs to a net gain of at most a hundred counts as huge job creation. Riiiight. John Boehner, who is a stock holder an several of the companies supporting the pipeline and stands to make substantial money if they build it, says the idea is not dead. He is claiming refinery jobs in Mexico will somehow count as jobs here in the US, and shipping the oil to China will somehow make us more energy independent.
* The Italian Coast Guard has had to give up searching the downed cruise ship with 21 still missing. Given the dangerous conditions, indications that the ship is in danger of breaking up, and the unlikelihood of finding more alive, I do not blame them for deciding risking more lives had stopped making sense. I am sorry for the families of the dead, but I think we must be realistic about the risks here.
Meanwhile, the ship's captain keeps changing his story, which looks fishy to me. Also, the cruise line is lying about the routes of previous trips, as the satellite tracking shows they were closer to shore last August. Evidence suggests they knew about and approved of the close brush to shore. There are still a whole lot of questions about corporate policies contributing to the accident, and whether or not there was missing or poorly installed equipment as I mentioned.

* I dreamed I was in an alternate universe were superheroes were common. I was going to a SF convention for geek superheroes. (I'm a lucid dreamer, and the stuff I can do as a result of that translates to super powers, if that makes sense). There was a kerfuffle over the handicapped parking. What! Superheroes need handicapped parking too. Ask Proffessor X and Oracle. This involved a trip in an elevator to the bowls of the parking complex with two other heroes with disabilities, a super villian sabotaged elevator (luckily, I can fly reliably in my sleep), and a corrider maze right out of Spinal Tap. the Convention was pretty cool though. Lots of nice panels. *facepalm*

Date: 2012-01-19 05:13 pm (UTC)3 cups vanilla wafers, ground
1 c ground (or finely chopped) toasted pecans
1 c confectioners' sugar + extra for coating the cookies
3 TBS light corn syrup (I use honey)
1/3 c bourbon/rum
Mix all the ingredients together. Pinch off bite-sized pieces of dough and roll into smooth balls. Sprinkle a little confectioners' sugar on a plate and roll the cookies in it, store in a container with a tight-sealing lid.
My notes: this is a really sweet recipe, I think you could cut the sugar by at least a quarter cup. And the dough is incredibly sticky - the recipe recommends dusting your hands with powdered sugar (!), but I use a little butter instead. And these are really good rolled in a 50:50 mix of sugar and unsweetened cocoa...
