Jan. 13th, 2012 10:54 pm* Iranian ships in the Strait of Hormuz tried to provoke US navy ships today. They have sentenced a marine to death for visiting his Grandmothers there. We have no diplomatic tie with Iran. It sounds like our diplomats are working with other Arab League members to pressure Iran to back down on their threatened blockade, as the blockade is not only against the interest of the Western Powers, but against the interests of all the oil producing nations that use the straight.
* I am aware of the Haley Barbour pardon situation, but at this distance, I don't feel competent to untangle the tangle of class, race, sex, and politics going on there. I know just enough to be skeptical of everyone involved including the pundits and experts. As a result, my lack of commentary is a matter of waiting to see what else happens rather than a lack of interest.
* It turns out, Ron Paul only applies his libertarian principles to men. He believes that we need big government to police women's wombs, require unnecessary medical procedures, and over ride the opinions of Doctors. I can only assume that this means he thinks women are not full citizens deserving of the same freedoms as as men. Um... eeew.
* A court ruled that the state of the Virginia does have the right to limit primary ballot choices to Romney and Paul.
* Gingrich is up in the polls in South Carolina, while santorum is scorned. *ahem*
* As I type this evangelical leaders are meeting in Texas to pick a non-Romney candidate to endorse, to cut down on splitting the reactionary vote.
* Re soldier peeing on the bodies in Afghanistan. I am with Rob Reiner here. I absolutely don't condone it, but I'm not particularly surprised. These things happen in war. Indeed, there are plenty of worse things soldiers do and have done with bodies in war. It doesn't make it right, but honestly, better the dead than the living. I care a hell of a lot more about the abuse of live prisoners than dead bodies. If this makes me a bad person, I'm okay with that.
* It looks like the pressure is working and Canada is not going to retroactively invalidate international marriages. http://www.vancouversun.com/life/Canada+change+recognize+marriages+foreigners/5991571/story.html
* My body continues uncooperative and I managed to miss the two things I needed to do today, one by three minutes and the other by less than a minute. The walk to and from the grocery store was so painful and exhausting, I ended up having to take a nap before unpacking even the perishables.
* I'm so disappointed. I started Christopher Moore's Fool, and discovered it to be full of homophobic insult. The book seems otherwise interesting and funny, so it was rather like biting into an apple and finding a maggot. I have heard the one about death that I couldn't get past the first couple chapters of is much the same. I am done with Christopher Moore, it seems, which is rather a shame, as I have enjoyed a number of his earlier works.
* Looks like Lupercalias have dropped at BPAL. They are doing a love poem series containing some Catullus scents. O.o Those of you who know my classics background and have seen me do my Catullus riff will have some idea of how I feel about that. Luckily for my finances, it's mostly stuff I can't wear as is normally the case with lupers. Unfortunately, the shungas are particularly tempting this year, and thus heartbreaking.
* This Chris Kane video was shot in the same Portland bar where a correspondent tells me they are/were shooting part of an episode of Grimm this week. Not only am I in favour of more shows shooting in more locations, but in my head, I am now imagining a Leverage/Grimm crossover. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ag-v3qrJHG0&feature=relmfu
