Jan. 13th, 2012 12:56 am* Someone has assassinated another Iranian nuclear scientist. The thought is that Iranian nationals did the actual murder, but there is speculation as to whether we or Mossad or someone else did the hiring. *facepalm* Pundit opinion looks to be leaning toward the Israelis, mostly on the strength of our foreign policy direction under President Obama. I have no opinion on who did it, or rather, I have a very complex opinion on the advisability, which I simply haven't energy to explain.
* Gov. Gregoire is considering a push for marriage equality in Washington. O.o I'll feel a lot better voting for her in fall if she really does it.
* The rumors are correct, Stephen Colbert has given John Stewart his Super Pac so he can run for President. Dude! Just.... Dude! For the record, I think Stephen Colbert has done more to illuminate the fuckery involved in post Citizens United campaign financing.
* Oh by the way, both Romney and Rick "frothy residue" Santorum want to "reform" campaign finance law by abolishing it. After all, why show there be any limits to amount or source? Think how this will favour the rich and corporations, who are the only "people" who matter to Republicans. Why not stop pretending we have a Democracy and let the corporations by representation out right?
* I'm with Rachel Maddow. The important bit of Romney's dog abuse story is that after the dog was clearly ill and not enjoying the ride, he hosed him off and strapped him back on the roof. That complete lack of empathy is emblematic of the man in all areas of his life. This is the man who made his money taking over companies and cannibalizing them into bankruptcy to squeeze profits for himself. He continues to call all the people who lost their jobs in downsizing and bankruptcy "job creation." No empathy at all for man or beast apparently. He's been out there the last couple days claiming that anyone wanting to change tax policy so it no longer favours the extremely rich as guilty of "envy." He can't imagine it might be about justice or what's good for the economy, because, presumably he can't imagine people have motives other than the ones that motivate him. This is a man incapable of understanding that he abused a dog he claimed to love. How do you think he will treat people who work for a living he doesn't even know. After all, it's their fault for not being born rich, then spending their adult lives destroying other people's lives to get even more money. After all, how can a man who's only guiding principle seems to be Greed id Good, understand why people might encumber themselves with ethics or compassion?
* On the two year anniversary, Haiti still hasn't recovered from the Earthquake, though things are improving. Most of the NGOs have left, but those remaining, are working well with the government, it sounds like. Unicef is still collecting donations (http://www.unicefusa.org/work/emergencies/Haiti/?gclid=CJKQx-nyy60CFQtqhwod_ALTIQ), The Haitian Relief Organisation is doing a lot of rebuilding to move people out of camps and back into homes (http://jphro.org/), and I'm a big fan of Doctors without Borders just generally as they do amazing work in the poorest countries in the world (https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/donate/?source=AZD0900H1001&gclid=CMDV6J_zy60CFWg0QgodRlm0gg).
* Canada has decided to retroactively invalidate same sex marriages of International couples. Charming. If you are Canadian, please complain to your MPs. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/ottawa-does-about-face-on-same-sex-marriage-for-non-canadians/article2299574/
* I keep seeing Republicans claiming that no state has been considering banning birth control. I haven't seen one interviewer point out that Mississippi tried to do just that last November and that most of the republican Candidates for president are advocating it. It's not a whacky question; it's a serious concern to anyone paying attention at all.
* There were several things I was meant to do the last couple days, but my body vetoed it all in favour of more rest. I did get up at 8AM to phone Philly to try to sort out a snag with the lawyer.
* Reading the secret Books of Paradys, I can't tell if I like it or not. It hits a lot of my interest buttons, but the narrator is so alien to me, I have trouble empathizing. It also feels like it was translated out of French, which may or may not be a bad thing depending on one's perspective. It's weirdly compelling, yet I periodically think it is endless and I wish it were over.
* I had a half hour between things I wanted to see, so I tried an episode of Portlandia. I am suspecting it's bizarre and absurdest to an east coast audience. I just kept thinking, "Wow, this is so Portland." I mean, yes, it's exaggerated, but not as much as you would think, if you've never spent time in the PNW. I'm not sure I liked it, as it's not quite my type of humor, but I'm not sorry I watched one just to see.
* There is a Bellingham specific commercial for a local health club. I looked up, and saw a naked lady emerging from the pool. I did a double take. It turned out that the peculiar lighting and her naturally sallow skin combined to make her sand coloured bikini look exactly like her skin. If the model was not aware she looked naked, I hope she's okay with it, as I ca imagine how that might be embarrassing to have the whole town squinting to see if she's really starkers.
