Dec. 9th, 2011 01:22 am* Mitt Romney has called for the passage of the Ryan plan to kill medicare. After all forcing the elderly and disabled to buy crappy, dramatically more expensive health care on the free market instead of giving them the cheap efficient Medicare Plans they have paid into their whole life is good for the Insurance Companies and has the added benefit of dramatically shortening the lives of the elderly, so of course this is a core Republican principle. Helps corporate "people"/kills mere humans who no longer count as people.. Perfect.
* In Michigan, republicans have overthrown elected government in Flint, Pontiac, and several other towns. They are planning to suspend Democracy in Detroit as well. After all, people who can vote can vote against you. If they take Detroit, that will mean more than half of the African Americans in Michigan will have been disenfranchised by Republicans.
If this doesn't scare you, you aren't paying attention.
* Putin has cracked down on the Moscow Protests, which keep getting bigger. Putin is blaming it all on Secretary of State Clinton, because she came out in favour of fair elections.
* Malawi is reconsidering their criminalization of homosexuality in light of Ms. Clinton's speech in the UN pointing out that gay rights are human rights and President Obama's new plan to tie aid to humane treatment of LGBT folk.
It's already working. O.o Thank you Mr. President.
* Carl Rove is using Wall Street money to run attack adds against Elizabeth Warren, the strongest voice for wall street regulation and consumer protection, for being too cosy with wall street on behalf of Sen. Brown, a candidate with some of the closest ties with Wall street of anybody in the Senate. This after running an add attacking her as a Wall street hating outsider. Makes my head hurt, it does.
* Gingrich is whipping Romney at the polls, presumably because being so deeply corrupt even other Republican Politicians were horrified and grossly hypocritical is less of a liability with the Republican hard core than Mormonism. Sigh.
* Rick "frothy residue" Santorum wants to abolish food stamps because allowing children and working poor adults to starve to death will solve the obesity epidemic. This despite the evidence that people who can't afford much food tend to pick cheap, filling foods like pasta and potatoes because that's what they can afford. He cites the large numbers of people on food assistance as if somehow this were not connected to Republican policies like financial deregulation and tax code that rewards moving jobs overseas. After all, letting people who lost their jobs in the financial crisis will play well with the rich folks who are the only human type people that matter to Republicans.
* I used most of the spoons on errands, so took it easy tonight. I'm at the stage where it's all one big logic puzzle anyway.

Date: 2011-12-09 09:55 am (UTC)As dumb and prejudiced as I think the GOP is, I no longer think Romney's Mormonism has anything to do with it. Indeed, if he was more openly impassioned about his religion, he'd probably be doing better, because let's not forget, Southern Baptists and other American fundamentalist evangelicals are no fans of Catholics, and part of Gingrich's whole sales pitch to Christians now is that his past sins are absolved because of his conversion to Catholicism.
Rather, I think you simultaneously identified and overlooked Newt's appeal — the unrepentantly mean-spirited and proudly hypocritical base of the far right loves Newt precisely because, rather than flip-flopping because he's pandering to them like Mitt, Newt changes his opinions and doesn't bother to reconcile them because he's a grotesque beast of a man who has absolutely no shame. They love him because he's a perfect reflection of all their own most undisguised cruelty and amorality, because the ultimate American dream now is to intentionally and proudly deny others the same freedom from sanctimonious judgement that you insist upon for yourself.
Mitt is many, MANY bad things, but he's not outright EVIL. The rump of the Republican Party WANTS someone who will brag about earning $60,000 per speech at the same time that he condemns poor children to work as janitors. These are the kind of people who masturbate to pictures of vivisection, and their mere existence should be regarded as an obscenity by sane and principled conservatives.
