* I am very glad Jack Hannah is out there advocating on behalf of exotic animals in Ohio. Clearly someone needs to be doing it and he may have the national clout to keep them safe from the widow wanting to move them back into abusive conditions.

* Tony Bolonga is being "kicked upstairs." This is a classic technique wherein someone is given an ostensible promotion that moves them out of a position of power. In this case they are moving him to Staten Island into a special division where he'll be less likely to embarrass the Police. This is generally attributed to him going public with his complete lack of remorse and intent to do it again. It's not enough, but it's better than the previously announced slap on the wrist and about all one can expect from the government of a big east coast city. This is certainly how they'd have handled it in Philly and I have no surprise at all the New York does things the same way.

* Rick Perry has promised to dramatically increase drilling in fragile habits, suspend all pollution limiting regulations, and dismantle the EPa, along with other items on the Petroleum Industry wishlist. Looks like he's a wholly owned subsidiary of the Oil and gas industry.

It's looking like his tax cut for the rich is the same size as mitt Romney's, only with additions that suggest he's either not very bright or that he thinks the rest of America isn't.

My favorite pundit sound bite from this month was about Rick Perry: "He puts the 'goober' in 'gubernatorial.'"

I really miss the late great Anne Richards and Molly Ivins, because we could sure use both of them right now.

* The Iraq combat veteran beaten by the Oakland police is now breathing on his own, but faces more surgery.

* The mayor of Oakland was defending the police violence against protesters, but in the face of people calling for her recall is now expressing concern for those injured.

* There is talk of a general strike Nov. 2nd, in Oakland and possibly New York.

* San Fransisco police gathered, but then dispersed this morning, the planned raid cancelled. I do not think it is coincidence.

* The protest movement in Anchorage is sending specialist winter camping advice to the folks in New York.

(Yes, I've still refusing to use the "occupy" language because it frankly makes me queasy given it's historical context. Yes, I'm planning to continue to call them "wall Street protests" or just "the protests." I notice I'm not the only one feeling that way about the language use and at least one protest in the south west feels the same way and is avoiding the "occupy" title. I absolutely do support the goals of sane financial reform and a progressive tax policy. Yes, I believe that having them brave elements and police violence is helping keep the national dialog on things actually needing doing instead of making things worse, like it's been. My support of their goals does not change my essential discomfort with the choice of name.)

* Sgt. Shemar Thomas organized some veterans to march in support of Oakland. The right wing news is claiming that he and the other combat veterans involved in the wall street pretests are all lying about their service and bought their uniforms and medals army surplus. This despite amply evidence that Scott Wilson and Shemar Thomas served. It seems particularly nasty to besmirch the reputation of combat veterans because they dare to disagree with FOX "news" when FOX is claiming to speak for them.

* I'll find out later this morning if the money went through. If it didn't, I've had a kind offer of a loan that could carry me over to the next bureaucracy phase. Hopefully the logistics will work out tomorrow.

The maddening thing is, that If I'd known our number was coming up in September round about July, I could have budgeted for more of this. There were bills I paid more on than I needed to, PRN meds I likely could have survived without, things that broke that I could have refrained from replacing. I could have not bought the decants I ebayed BPALs for, etc.. If I'd known that there were literally no handicapped accessible apartments in the price range in Bellingham for folks under 55, I could have signed for the one with stairs earlier. Gah!

I fucking hate drama, and this drama was particularly unnecessary.

* Mache's being the little angel she always is in a crisis. I know I don't talk about her much, but that's because she's such a good girl. I want to doubly thank those of you who chipped in to save her last spring. As I type this, she's sitting in the copilot's seat, keeping me company.

The Junior Beasties "helpfully" cleared the top of the coffee table onto the floor. I simply don't have the energy to deal with titanic cat messes tonight. The financial emergancy ate my evening to no good purpose. I just want to live somewhere safe and cheap that won't eat away my lungs.

I'm so glad you also support Jack Hanna. I know many friends disagree with his views with what happened in Ohio - including him saying that it was OK that the animals were killed in order to protect public safety of humans living in the area. I think his is one of the few sane voices in the debate of what has happened and what should happen.

He was so clearly distraught over the deaths of those animals. Like simultaneously nearly in tears and furious at the humans who put him in the position to have to kill those animals. It was pretty clearly worst day in his professional life. The reason they had to do it was they had an hour until sunset and they were disbursing towards populated areas. The risk was simply too fucking high. He's doing everything in his power to 1. comfort and protect the survivors, who have only just started eating again, and 2. either outlaw private corrections or at minimum get the recently repealed regulations governing safer and healthier conditions for animals in private collections not only put back in place, but strengthened in the hopes of preventing future tragedies.

I place the blame where it belongs, not on a heartbroken man who was forced into an impossible position by the selfishness and negligence of other people (the man who had the collection and released the animals into a populated animal and the Republican governor who decided exotic animals no longer needed to be kept in conditions that are healthy and safe for them in the name of "job creation)." It's pretty fucking clear to me who the assholes are in this situation, and it's not the people who have dedicated their lives to working with and advocating for animals who had to do something they never wanted to do or thought they would ever have to do.
