Oct. 18th, 2011 02:15 am* I saw the rousing speech Dr. Martin Luther King Bernice's daughter gave. It was really beautiful, and I'd link it for you, but she misspoke and said Declaration of Independence instead of Emancipation Proclamation, and as a result, all the clips I could find easily are mocking her, missing the point of what she was trying to say entirely, so rather than disrespect her with other people's assholery, I'm just going to say that it was a very powerful speech.
* Herman Cain wants you to know he was just joking about killing illegal immigrants, presumably because Republicans find killing Latinos funny. The Congressional Hispanic caucus is not amused, and some prominent Republicans out in the states are upset. He says he needn't apologize because he didn't mean to offend anybody. I mean after all, it's the fault of Latinos if they don't find jokes about killing people who look just like them funny, right? Wrong.
* Re the Herman Cain Imagine Pizza clip,: Who among us hasn't sung a song parody or filk at some point? yes, it's an easy target, but I don't think having sung a parody on film should bar one from office. I'm against him because I like women having the right to make medical decisions for themselves and I'm for a sane tax policy, which is pretty much why I'm against everyone in this primary. I am not against him for some silly clip of him singing that really could be any of us.
* In the polls, the only named Republican candidate (as opposed to a generic one) who is within a margin of error of Obama is Romney. Of course, the extreme right wing evangelical Republican base is going after him hard because they hate Mormons, who they consider evil heathens, despite them sharing anti-gay, anti-women's rights, and pro-death core beliefs. For those overseas, Mormons consider themselves Christians, but evangelicals hate them and call them a heathen cult, etc.. Do not expect me to explain evangelical thinking because trying just gives me a head ache. While I am no fan of the Mormons, to me both they and the Evangelicals are both dangerous, well funded political groups who go to great lengths not only to deny me my civil and human rights, but are actively working to strip the ones i have away. I have no problem with mainstream Christians who aren't using religion to harm people and in some cases insisting that others who don't believe as they do die for their narrow view of Christianity, but I do have a problem with folks wielding money and influence to drag us all back to the 19th century.
* I find it seriously fucked up that Mrs. Perry is out complaining about her husband being persecuted for his religion when the only Republican candidates I seeing being attacked for their religion are the Mormons, and some of the attacks are coming from Perry endorsers who Perry himself courted. Can anyone say projection? This doesn't even touch the bullshit Obama has to deal with because of all the republicans who insist he's a secret Muslim. He looks like a total scrotum next to Obama.
* Rush Limbaugh is in favor of the violent gang, Lord's Resistance Army, in Uganda that kidnaps children for sex trafficking and child soldiers on the grounds that they have God in the title so rape, murder, and genocide are totally okay.
* I simply haven't the time or energy tonight to list countries the protests have spread to, but how cool is it, they are protesting in Taiwan?

* Hector randomly woke up sane yesterday, for which I am grateful. This happens sometimes, his brain chemistry stabilizes, he starts sleeping properly, eating with minimal drama, and cuddling. When it's bad like it's been, it's easy to forget what a sweetheart he is when he's doing okay. As I type this, he's fast asleep behind the laptop, twitching with dreams.
* LM is rather new to the Pettin Throne. She seems to get the no competition for the throne itself idea, grabbing it only when it's unoccupied like the others do, but today, she posited an hypothesis that you can sit in the Pettin Throne and while no cat can attack you there, you can ambush passersby attempting to hit up the office station for kibble. She was wrong. I do not sanction attacks that the other cat is not allowed to retaliate against.
* My plan for tomorrow is to do some last minute errands, hang out with Greenwick for a few hours, pack, finish up a few things, then head to the airport in the wee hours of Wednesday AM. I expect to have no Internet acces while there. I'll go to the service next day and take a night flight back that doesn't arrive until Friday afternoon. I expect to be thoroughly wiped out by then, so it may be a while before you here from me or until I can catch up on correspondence. Leave a PM or email if it's urgent.

* Yes I heard about the new book on Van Gogh, but I haven't read it and I'll have to see the evidence before forming an opinion. I'm sceptical, but willing to give it a hearing.
* It makes me happy that Dick Gregory and Harry Belafonte are still out there being feirce, feisty, and curmudgeonly after more than my lifetime of activism.
