Several of these aren't as mysterious as they pretend. For example, the Easter Island script developed in response to islanders seeing European sailors writing things down. they invented their own, as it seemed a good idea. While we can't read the script, it's a list of begats. so and so begat so and so. We know one character is essentially "begat," but have no way of telling what the names are.
