gwydion: (Whatchyou talkin abou?)

* I see things gearing up for the annual 9/11 wallow/bloody shirt waving. The flood of tasteless swag and news shows being taken over by supposed commemorative shit that I suspect must be salt in the wounds for the families of the dead. I refuse to take part in the fucked up merchandising and cruelty of the annual national "let's make money off of tragedy" festival. As a result, there will be little or no news in this space until it's over. (The Sunday or Monday archeology round up should continue along with random fluff items and anything involving marginalized groups that happen to come to my attention, but I won't be monitoring news the way I normally do, unless there is another major disaster).

* Obama caved on new science based smog reduction regulation. He didn't even try to pass it through congress, even though he promised environmental groups he'd fight for it if they didn't sue.

* How was my day? Today sucked, mostly because I was late on my anti-nausea drugs and had time sensitive errands that could not wait on me lying very still with my eyes closed while I white knuckled the bad bit. No, the bad bit hit while I was standing in a very slow moving line. I had plenty of time to drop my burdens and locate a nearby and friendly trash can, but it was not pretty and very public. They gave me water and exactly the sort of crackers I keep at home for these emergencies, and as I had already digested the meds, things were fine in about ten minutes when they kicked in.

Half of them said "Sir" and "he," half said "Ma'am" and "she." I've been going there thirteen years or so, and I think they think I have cancer. In any case, they were very kind. The terrible part? I had two more hours of errands to do.

* Those of you who know me know my interest in the history of clothing. I give you, "100 Years of What to Wear in 100 Seconds:" http://thehairpin.com/2011/08/100-years-of-what-to-wear-in-100-seconds

* They found Ned Kelly's body, but not his head: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/06/science/06kelly.html?_r=1&ref=science

* I am surprised Moby Dick wasn't on there, as that thing felt like it took years to read. As it is, I've only read two of these, having given up on Proust after a chapter or so: http://flavorwire.com/205319/10-novels-that-we-dare-you-to-finish

* "Let’s talk about: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)" (Full of spoilers): http://arsmarginal.wordpress.com/2011/09/03/lets-talk-about-rise-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-2011/#more-990

* You know, I actually genuinely liked the last few episodes of Torchwood. I think it was the psychology of jack in "Immortal Sins" is what finally sucked me back in emotionally, and now I'm running along with them. I like the way absences are sort of silent characters now, a subtext for folks who've been watching the other seasons and pertinent bits of Doctor Who, while being invisible if you haven't. I'd given up on loving this season, but the last three episodes, I loved, and I have hopes for the finale.

I'll be checking up on North Korea, because the sites I get news from about that are not American, and the major one is dedicated only to news about NK. But other than that, I'm going to be skipping as much as I can for '9/11 fest' too.

Are you surprised Obama caved? I'm trying not to be, but it still floors me every time that he just gives in. A Mother Jones article suggested that he's just trying to get the best deal that he can, and that he is able to get more out of the GOP by doing what he does with them.

Except he doesn't. I get that that's the theory, but it's not working and it's past time top be playing hard ball.

Yeah, because he goes so far to give the right what they want, and then they want a little bit extra.
