* Despite me not having paid them in years, The Advocate keeps coming, and i keep putting it in the bathroom for reading. It used to be there were no trans folk in it. Then they made an incredibly crappy attempt at inclusion, doing little 101 type pieces while simultaneously using "tranny" to mean ugly and lauding anti-trans gay celebrity, Christian Sirano. Um... eeew. Lately they've been making another, better attempt, doing a long feature on non-binary bisexual celebrity, Justin Vivian Bond, and now, putting Chas Bono on the cover. (I haven't read the Chas Bono piece yet, so i can't comment on the quality.) They've cut dramatically down on using "tranny" as an insult for cis women as well. I've only seen it once in recent memory. An apology would have been nice, but it's good to see an upward trend. I do think it's interesting how much more comfortable they have been with trans men than with trans women, even when the trans content was a few paragraphs rather than features. I am wondering if this has something to do with drag queen culture, or if it's more of the misogyny that led them to repeatedly use "tranny" as an insult, and which has tainted some of their lesbian coverage.

I am fully aware of The Advocate's historic problems with biphobia and lack of POC representation. For a while there, they seemed to be trying to fix these things by adding more POC writers and doing some pieces on the bullshit bi folk get from both sides. I've noticed there's been a lot of back sliding lately. It's like they can't concentrate on avoiding one kind of discrimination without forgetting to not discriminate against other groups. Sigh.

* To be clear, New York having equality isn't nearly enough. We need National Equality, obviously. It's just New York is a step toward that. Each section of the wall broken down is one step closer to crumbling the edifice of inequality under the law. I always hope for a wrecking ball, but as picks and chisels are all we have just now, picks and chisels, we'll use.

* I think Outcasts is going to shape up okay. It does seem a little Law and Order: Uk: Crumbling Space Colony Edition, but I'm just fine with that.
