Jun. 9th, 2011 05:06 am* I think I have a crush on Maziar Bahari.
* The Republicans want to remind you how much worse what Anthony Wiener did that what their darling Ensign did. After all, Mr. Ensign merely coerced a women to sleep with him through threats of firing her and her husband, was involved in all sorts of financial malfeasance, and strong armed a firm into breaking federal lobbying laws; while Anthony Wiener engaged in consensual cybersex! I mean, come on, consensual tsing is way worse than all that other stuff, right? Similarly, Republicans fully support David Viter, and have not demanded he resign for congress over his prostitution scandal, as sleeping with prostitutes while campaigning as a family values abstinence only candidate is not nearly as bad as being a progressive having cyber sex. (I know prostitution is illegal, but I am of the opinion that consenting adults should be able to sell their sexual services. That means the person must be of age and not coerced. I generally consider this as an exception to the illegal activity rule. My issue with Vitter is not the sex workers, but the rank hypocrisy).
All I ask is that people pick as standard. My standard is, if it was consensual and legal, it's not my business. The Republican standard appears to be that any hypocrisy, non-consensual sex (Ensign), or financial malfeasance is okay is you are Republican, but if you are a Democrat, breaking the moral code Republicans pay lip service to but don't follow is worst crime in the world. I say, Republicans need to pick one standard and apply it equally to republicans and Democrats. I think I have the moral authority to point that out on the grounds that I do that. I challenge the folks demanding that Mr. Wiener resign to do the same for David Vitter. Otherwise, I think they should shut up. Of course, I think anyone who demanded Clinton resign over a hummer should have resigned as soon as they had their sex scandals, but of course, that would seriously deplete Republican leadership in Congress. If a person did not have a sex scandal after condemning Clinton, or did not condemn Clinton while having extra martial sex, I say carry on.
Pick a standard, folks. It doesn't have to be mine, but at least pick a position that isn't wildly hypocritical.
* Anthony's Wiener looks to be distracting from things like Mitt Romney coming out in favour of letting the American auto industry die, but now claiming he was in favour of the successful bailout of the auto industry; or Tim Pawlenty coming out with a tax plan that would cut taxes for the rich so severely that it would cost an extra estimated 7.8 billion beyond what the current extra tax cuts for the rich would cost us, even though this does not create jobs and taxes are the lowest they've been since before Eisenhower; or the whole plan to strip women of the right to make basic decisions about their bodies and plans in four states to outlaw birth control; or Republican plans to abolish Medicare to pay for even more tax cuts for the rich; or Republicans disenfranchising young, old, and poor voters in number of states; the fact that they are about to outlaw all abortion and most birth control in Alabama; or the wars we don't need to be in that waste lives and money; or... you get the idea.
* I had written to this point Tuesday afternoon, but forgot to post what with deusabscondum here.
* Republicans in Wisconsin are now trying to force the Democrats to have primaries in the hopes of delaying recall and general elections, presumably in the hopes of doing even more damage.
* In Mississippi the right wing folks are openly doing a tour in support of a law forcing women to bear the children of their rapists and to ban birth control.
* The stuff going on in Alabama and Mississippi scares the shit out of me.

* 66 years late, Rocky Matayoshi has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, for his astonishing personal bravery in WWII. It may be late, but at least he is still alive to receive it. It does not right the wrong of his family being Interned, but it a small step toward my country doing the right thing by acknowledging the patriotism and bravery of Japanese American soldiers in WWII.
* In Libya, the battle of Misrata continues. In Japan, they have lowered safety standards to allow small children to attend heavily irradiated schools, on the grounds we don't actually know for sure it will give them cancer. The collapse in Yemen continues, as the President has been wounded and is in Saudi Arabia for treatment. I weep for syria, but that's nothing new.
* A person who had been in that horrible study at UCLA were they emotionally and physically abused children to try to force them to have a more traditional gender therapy has killed himself as a result of the cruelty and humiliation he suffered in the name of "reparative therapy." The researcher, George "lift my luggage, Rent Boy" Rekers is still using these results to claim reparative therapy works. He has specifically gone on and on claiming this as an unmitigated success, despite the fact that "Craig," real name Kirk never recovered from this abuse. Some other men abused as boys in that study have come forward with tales of depression and drug use as the result of being fundamentally damaged by being in the study. Meanwhile they are considering putting reparative therapy for LGBT folk back into the DSM. After all, it's known to cause serious harm up to and including suicide and there is no evidence at all that it actually works. Why not forcibly subject vulnerable children and teens to it. After all, what do they care if it causes long term psychological damage as long as it shores up claims of homophobes and transphobes that LGBT people are sick and have brought all the discrimination on themselves.
