* Thanks to tibicina for sending me the 411 on I am Four. I'm definitely not seeing it then: http://nymag.com/arts/books/features/69474/

I think I want to take a shower. They make Steve Jackson Games look ethical by comparison and that's hard.

* Protests are really heating up in Iran, Iraq, and Libya. In Iran, the government is spreading deliberate misinformation and organizing counter protests. In Bahrain, police cracked down hard on protesters, attacking sleeping women and children as well as actual awake protesters and reporters. A foreign correspondent was sexually assaulted and beaten in Egypt last Friday. I have no words, really.

* They are now protesting at Doctor Mila Mean's suburban house thanks to Operation Rescue. Her personal house. They are harassing her neighbors as well. They did not call in the press. It's a focused attempt to threaten murdered Dr. Tiller's replacement into refusing to provide legal medical services.

* In Wisconsin they are protesting against an attempt to prevent public employees from bargaining collectively. Democratic politicians, being mostly spineless, aren't bothering to stand up for them. The Budget office in Wisconsin says they have a surplus. The Government apparently made up the numbers that "prove" the budget crisis. If they are so badly off financially, why did the governor give millions of targeted tax breaks for the rich. If they are having a huge budget shortfall, shouldn't that have been the first thing to go instead of firing people like teachers, garbage collectors, and librarians? In Ohio they are planning to make it illegal for state workers to strike.

* No right wing media, the peoples of the Middle East are not genetically incapable of participating in democracy. Can you folks hear yourself when you talk?

* OMG! They had Eric Foner on Colbert! This likely means nothing to most of you, but his huge book on Reconstruction was and continues to be incredibly important.

I wasn't aware that SJ Games had ethical issues. Do you have a link or brief summary?

I don't know f this is still going on but in the late '80's and early '90's, their SOP was to recruit young artists to draw the art in their sourcebooks, for a flat fee of $1000.00. Artists signed over all rights, of course. It was a huge amount of work, but if you needed the money, it was worth it. Except they never sent the check on completion.

It happened to a friend of mine. He needed that money for rent and the like. he was so excited when they recruited them to draw a GURPS source book. I watched him draw the thing, hurrying to make deadline. He turned it in. No check. He wasted all this money calling to ask where his check was. They kept saying it was in the mail. The book he drew came out and we could see it in stores, yet no money came. six months after publication, Steve Jackson himself lied about the check being in the mail. That it was illegal to publish with art they hadn't paid for didn't matter. a year later they sent a check for $250.00. I lost track at the two year point, when he still had not been paid in full.

Over the course of the dispute, he'd gotten in touch with other artists who'd drawn GURPS sourcebooks or other art for them and never been paid or fobbed off with token amounts below what was in the contract. They had a terrible reputation, so could only get art by recruiting young illustrators who didn't know better and couldn't afford to say no to any commission.

He could get away with it, as the amounts were too small to be worth suing over, though the loss was devastating to the struggling artists he was gleefully burning one after another.

If you PM me, I'll tell you my friend's name and which book he drew. I'm no longer in contact, but I don't want to putt his name in a public place in case having it here will fuck him over for other work.
