Dec. 21st, 2011 12:18 am* The Egyptian government is violently cracking down on Democracy protesters. They are targeting women particularly in all the horrible ways one would expect. The government is pretending today's march of peaceful unarmed women protesters against the government violence against women are paid thugs undermining the government. Y'all know what I'm thinking about this. The military council continues to resist giving up it's power. The Egyptian people look to be not willing to give up their Democratic dreams.
* There was yet another government massacre in Syria today.
* House Republicans continue to block the extension of unemployment benefits and the pay roll tax cut on the grounds that they help ordinary Americans rather than the extremely wealthy and they only approve of tax cuts that help people who don't need it and harm or fail to help the economy. Of course. After all, why not force Democrats to cave on a whole bunch of more wasteful and unnecessary measures that harm or inconvenience ordinary folks to solve problems that don't exist? Remember way back when I said caving when the Republicans hold the economy hostage the first time was a mistake as it would teach them they can get away with it as much as they want? Yeah. After all, cutting medicare to pay for mandatory drug testing of folks trying to collect the unemployment insurance they already paid for makes no sense, but it hurs both seniors and the poor, so Republicans are all for it.
* Old school real politik Senate Republicans, notably led by John McCain have turned against house Speaker Boehner have denounced house Republican assholery as hurting the party.
* Yes, I saw the footage of the police pushing down in the snow and arresting a schizophrenic woman at their attack on the Denver financial protests. What more is there to say, really.
* I was awakened today by a Republican robo call about Hilary Clinton designed to attack Obama. O.o
* Watching the wake in season three of the Wire, which was really a tribute to a cocreator who had died, it struck me that the same impulse that made me choose the Pogues for my soldier's wake, struck the folks making the Wire. The Pogues: perfect music for a Wake.
* It was partway into season three of Oz, that I finally figured out why I reacted so intensely and complexly to Miguel Alverez. I find the actor sexy and attractive in every context I see him, but I don't have a reaction that extreme to him in other roles. Basically, the actor is my type, but the character he's playing in Oz weds looks and build very similar to my Honey Sweet Boy of long ago with body language and mannerisms so like him that it verges on eery. There was some shot of him in motion in season three that made me flash on a sequence from my eighteenth birthday and I put it together. Now I can't unsee it.
