Sep. 20th, 2011 12:44 am* 81% of Americans agree with Obama that hedge fund managers should pay a tax rate as high or higher than a teacher or a sectary. Boehner was out again calling any attempt to tax the rich the way we tax the middle class as "class warfare" against the rich. I say, letting them pay a much lower rate is class warfare by the rich against anyone else.
* Boehner is categorically against the president's job plan. After all, it is expected to create 1.9 million jobs, and we can't have that. After all, it would help the economy.
* The DADT repeal took effect a minute past Midnight, allowing LGB folk to serve in our military.
* neo_prodigy found, a call for a moment of silence for trans folk still facing discharge if outed: http://transgriot.blogspot.com/2011/09/dadt-dies-today-but-not-for-transpeople.html
* Remember that town in Michigan, where the governor overruled the elected government and appointed a city manager no one voted for? The city council voted to have a week honoring the constitution. The city manager abolished it, as the elected government is no longer allowed to make laws or pass resolutions under the imposed Republican regime. After all, one of the current Republican ideological goals is to disfranchise the poor and POcC, and that town is mostly poor and POC, therefore, their votes no longer count. I thought it would take a repeal of a couple constitutional amendments to disenfranchise large groups of people in this country, but in states all over the country, all it's taking is a Republican governor and legislative majority.
* As sad as it it is when someone is injured or killed, my feeling is, there is inherent risk in working with wild animals, whether it's killer whales, or tigers, or komodo dragons. It is unfair to blame the animals for behaving according to their natural instincts. Whether or not there were OSHA violations needs to be looked into. There is certainly a debate to be had over suitability of various species to be confined in zoos or places like sea world. I am extremely uncomfortable with the imprisonment of creatures as social and intelligent as whales and dolphins, who I feel are much better left in the sea with others of their kind. This doesn't negate either the grief of the trainer's friends and family, nor the fact that the killer whale was behaving according to it's instincts and the risks that those instincts pose to humans in close proximity are known.
* A whole bunch of Congressional Republicans are trying to stop any investigation of the hacking of 9/11 bombing victims phones on the grounds that it did not happen in the US. After all, it's not like New York is one of the 650 states, right? Assholes.
* For the last two and a half weeks or so, Hector has taken it into his head, I shouldn't be allowed to sleep longer than two hours at a stretch. Today, he shortened that to an hour, so that by the time I'd finally drifted back to sleep after the last time, he was ready to start up again. Then he did that thing where I wasn't even properly settled back into the bed before he started up again. I know it's cruel, but I scooped him up and locked him outside of the room. I managed a whole three hours of uninterrupted sleep before the groundskeepers woke me up, a half hour before the alarm. I completely failed to do errands, but I did do another page of apartment hunt phone calls. There will be crap for sleep tomorrow too, what with appointments and things needing doing.
Hector followed up his performance by 3-4 hours of inconsolable howling in the evening. He didn't want food or pets. The meds didn't seem to work.

Date: 2011-09-21 09:15 am (UTC)That said, I don't think you really can get rid of the history and what Superman has come to mean and how he has come to be identified. BUT, Morrison may not have been thinking through the implications of that and may have been trying to really just reboot Action Comics without all that subsequent history. Morrison may also have been trying to make the audience question Superman's rightness and just not been explicit enough with it. Though I am fully prepared to believe that he's now in a place where he doesn't have anyone really questioning some of his artistic decisions and doesn't have to listen much when they do.
Still, I really do read that post and go 'Have you read the original Action Comics? Cause that's one of the few Superman issues that I've actually read a large chunk of (and had the plots of some of the subsequent ones explained, mostly in a number of panels comparing early, golden, and silver age comics at ComicCon). And Superman, in that, REALLY NOT A BOYSCOUT. Heck, most of his background as we know it didn't exist. He was pretty much Jewish Boy in New York. Who gets revenge for bad things people are doing there.'
All of which is to say that unless you have other evidence of Morrison 'liking' bullies, this is not really it.
