Aug. 30th, 2011 03:53 am* Train service has been restored DC and points north. Death toll so far is 38 (or 37, depending on source). Flooding is still a problem in places like Vermont and upstate NY. I'm not quoting damage estimates as they are really inaccurate as in some areas the flooding is actually getting worse, not better. Some towns are mostly debris and mud. North Carolina is still under tornado watch. Another hurricane looks to be forming, but is expected not to make landfall.
* It's the sixth anniversary of Katrina.
* Michelle Bachman is claiming that the earthquake and hurricane happened because people aren't taking her seriously enough. Wow. Just wow. She is also claiming that if we do yet another round of tax cuts for the rich and corporations, the economy will be fixed in 90 days. Right. After all, the Bush tax cuts slowed the economy dramatically, and the ones the republicans forced next year didn't create any jobs, so doing it yet again even more dramatically will obviously have the opposite effect than it's had over the last 11 years, and will do so in ninety days or less. Riiiiiight. I bet she also has a bridge to sell us.
* Ron Paul is arguing in favor of abolishing FEMA. After all, a hundred years ago we just let people die in large numbers and if survivors were ruined, they were ruined.
* Huntsman is claiming abolishing the EPA will create jobs. I'm not making this up.
* Rick Perry keeps pushing his plan to abolish social security entirely. After all, people pay into it for forty or more years, so it's completely unfair that they get that money back. Better to redistribute all that money upwards and push the elderly and disabled into homelessness.
* Eric Cantor says we should stop planning for disasters or setting aside money every year.
I mean, after all, it's not like there are flooding and hurricanes every year. Wait, there are? Too bad, we should pretend that there isn't so we can be completely unprepared every single time, right, Mr. Cantor? Remember, reality has a well known liberal bias and should be ignored.
Cantor's also pushing for abolishing unions, getting rid of the minimum wage, getting rid of the EPA, and any regulations protecting workers and consumers. After all, the rich have it better than they have since the 20's and this is not creating jobs, so making it even better for them at the expense of workers will magically make it all better. I know doing more of what harms the economy and expecting the opposite response is Republican orthodoxy right now, but we're in an international crisis, so it seems to me now is time to do what actually works instead of digging the hole deeper. I know, blasphemy.
* Rick Santorum is out whining that gay people are waging "jihad" against him. Given how many countries in the middle east routinely imprison and/or execute people, this seems beyond tasteless. If Mr. Santorum wants us to stop referring to "frothy residue," maybe he should consider no longer campaigning against our civil rights. Being called "Santorum" is not nearly as hateful as accusing us of pedophilia and bestiality, and it sure isn't as offensive as denying us the full rights of citizenship. Given how much worse the things he says and continues to say, I'm having a hard time feeling sorry for him.
* We've killed another Al Queada leader. Either #2 or 3. It depends on how you count. Yes, this keeps happening. these are the dudes who do the communications and give orders, so they are more exposed.
* Serial child rapist Warren Jeffs is in a coma.
* Yes, I know I keep posting that links to help East Africa. That's because it's an ongoing crisis, and we'll be lucky if it only lasts another 6-8 months.
* Algeria may be hiding some of Qaddafi's family, looks like. There are more claims one of the sons, may have been killed in battle, but no proof, so I'm not holding my breathe there. There is saber rattling between Algeria and the new Libyan government. This bears watching.
