Aug. 20th, 2011 03:27 am* Obama is moving to prevent deportation of US military veterans, spouses of LGB folk, people who where brought here as children and grew up in this country, etc.. It's a step forward to protect valuable members of our society. It's a good first step. Remember how I was saying it was heartbreaking the dream Act didn't pass last December. It's a stay of deportation, not a path to citizenship. We still need the dream act and repeal of DOMA, but this makes an immediate material difference to countless families and individuals, some of whom risked life and limb defending this country, many of whom have families. Thank you Mr. President. It may not be all we want, it may not last, but it's politically brave and it's the right thing to do. http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2011/08/obama-administration-halts-deportations-of-non-criminal-immigrants.html
Republican politicians are already screaming that focusing on deporting criminals instead of military veterans is unconstitutional.
* In Michigan, at least one of the Republicans facing recall is robocalling people to scare them out of signing petitions. If the cause of stripping union rights from people who work for a living is so just and popular, why do they need to cheat to win? Why are they so scared of democracy if they are the true patriots as they so frequently claim?
* I've been having trouble get my head around what day it is all week. I hate when that happens. It's disorienting. In retrospect, it's a miracle I didn't screw up appointments.
* I've been doing really well with Babylon 5, just enjoying it for what it is for the most part. I'm getting to the emotionally dicey bits, so that may change. Still, I got through the bit that always reminds me of my childhood with year after year of interrogations designed to break me, to get me to accept one small lie to make the others easier to say. It didn't even get me this time, the set up and language being too like a stage play based on Kafka or Camus. The bit I expect to really hurt is at the end, but I've more than a season of shows left until I get there.
* This week the cats have been doing this thing after Squiirel goes to work, where they compete to see who can get closet to me. The closest mests (nest+mammal=mest) are all non-competition zones, so they wait patiently until one of them gets up to eat or prowl or use the litter, then scramble to grab the mest they were coveting. when I get up to do something, they must decide whether to give up a prime mesting spot and follow to stay close or stay and bet I'm coming back to the office, poor things. Mache has found the winning strategy though. when we first rescued them, the senior beasties used to sit on my feet whenever i was in a chair. It was warm and safe and I couldn't abandon them while they slept, which was their fear. At some point they grew out of it. I missed it, really. She's started sleeping on my feet again while i work on the computer.
