* How sad is it that when Squirrel came home and asked me what was happening in Europe in 1660, even though it's out of my period, I immediately jumped to: I think that's the middle of the bit with the Cromwells and Charles II, and that Louis XIV, the Sun King, was on the throne, though I couldn't remember if he was already reigning or still under a regent. It turned out Charles' restoration was in May (Ha!), and Louis started reigning the next year. Knowing this, I could explain the French political and economic situation late in the french regency. Anne of Austria, Mazarin, and broke, in case you were curious). From there I found out Philip IV was still holding on over in the Hapsburg empire and could double check that we were between the Thirty years war and the next outbreak of hostility between France and the Hapsburgs. Okay, so I'm weaker on Spain/HRE. Without looking, I could also describe Louis XIV's taste in women at the time and his brother Phillippe's taste in men, if anyone had asked about his brother. (I really like Phillippe, okay? He's a gay man who spent most of his childhood in drag, who then turned out to be an excellent swordsman and general. What's not to like about a scented dandy who can kick your ass six ways to Sunday who lived out and proud in the 17th century?) I am such a nerd.

BTW, the Alan Cummings looking guy with the wicked smile to the left of this picture is Phillippe. You can really see why he made the men crazy with desire: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fe/Louis14-Family.jpg/800px-Louis14-Family.jpg

* Dude! The John Oliver search for South African racial tension was fascinating. The Daily Show does some amazing stuff sometimes.

* I'm not a consumer of four colour comics, and it's not my genre. Still, I'm old enough that I watched Wonder Woman on TV as a kid and it pisses me off that they've decided to strip her powers. She was one of the few super heroes little girls could look up to and depowering her and making her less alpha and more plain clothes reads like a statement about taking power away from women and making them invisible in general. The new costume would work for Jubilee grown up, but it doesn't look like wonder woman to me.

Pretty much neo_prodigy seems on the nose to me, and the bit about plain clothed vs. costumed superheroes is fascinating: http://neo-prodigy.livejournal.com/820408.html?style=mine

* Between True Blood, Angel, and forever Knight, I'm having trouble keeping details of vampire back stories apart. Embarrassing.
