Every day is perfect, if
when you wake, you hear birds
in the garden, in the yard. Birds

up and down, ushering in one more day
in all the houses on Shaker Way. Birds
on telephone lines, light posts. Birds

twit, twittering on trees
hailing fellow birds
with a nod of  beak—gray kingbird;

top-hatted, streamertail
tuxedoed, doctor bird—
busy-bodied hummingbird

tucking in, out, of pink, red ixoras
punch-drunk in love. Birds
preening for, chatting up other birds—

the oriole, the grass quit, in mid-song
on the lawn, in a dance of  birds
an all-day-long conference of bird;

red-headed woodpecker
—drummer boy, or girl bird
in this daily symphony of  birds

—an orchestra on Shaker Way
in serenade of each perfect day with birds—
from the very first mockingbird

heralding, in solo warble
one more day, filled with birds—
brightened, lightened, trilled by birds:

precious, diamond-throated
sweet song, miracle-toting birds
the-gift-of-day-is-here birds.

Bird, bird, bird. Hello bird.
You lift me up bird.
You sing the day beautiful, bird.

Rok continues to be the best at everything, and deserves all the hugs. Though I remain baffled how ST thinks they can on one hand have post-scarcity nearly everywhere (including, one presumes, in places just outside of the Federation where they can easily abscond with probable Federation citizens) and also have seedy underbellies everywhere as well. The problem is that they never actually worked out how it all works, and I think the only solution is to ditch the idea that even the Federation really has no currency and is totally post-scarcity. Everybody has their basic needs met, I'll agree is supported by the writing. Anything past that, no.

Anyway, Rok's friend in her tragic backstory was clearly no more able to leave that situation than she was and though I can see there's too much plot for that to happen in canon I really hope they could rescue him.

Speaking of tragic backstories, I cannot believe a. that Dal tried to say his was the worst and b. his version of being "the worst" absolutely skips past the part where Read more... ) But seriously, dude, you grew up as a slave on a mine full of child slaves. It's not a situation people get into because their life was just so great beforehand. If everything was hunky-dory, none of you would've been targeted in the first damn place. You all have a terrible backstory, you don't need to prove it!

Moving on, Murf continues to also be the best, but ffs, can somebody get him an AAC? Or a whiteboard, at least? Teach him sign language? This is a solved problem even in the real world, surely Starfleet can figure it out!

Nothing to say about Jankom, he's just there. *shrug* And I feel kinda ditto about Zero, tbh. I mean, I like them, but....

Ma'Jel, between her cool hair and her increasingly consternated expression as the turbolift got more and more crowded, is clearly not one of the most unemotional Vulcans out there. (I don't care what Vulcans say, the opposite of "logical" is not "emotional", it's just "illogical".) I feel like she and our darling T'Lyn would have a lot to talk about.

The adults on the ship - this show is clearly trying to walk a fine line between keeping them competent and allowing the kids to run circles around them. I'm not sure it always works, but I appreciate the effort, and also I appreciate how they were careful to make it clear that the adults, whether they're being strict or a bit Too Much, are only acting the way they do because they're sympathetic. (Frankly, all the kids could stand to appreciate their new situation a bit more - except Rok, she already gets it - but I understand why they're struggling a bit.)

Gets a bit spoilery )

These days, I don't have the patience or fortitude to do extensive genealogical research. On the other hand, I am endlessly fascinated by some of the terminology I see used in family histories. Things like:

Joe Blow was a child of natural birth

Jill Hill was born on the wrong side of the blanket

As modern-day readers, we probably understand what is meant and muse to ourselves: how quaint! We may reflect on how closed-minded earlier generations were. Then we congratulate ourselves on our wokeness at having mastered Equity Diversity & Inclusion 101.

It's true that the euphemisms we use to spare others - whether from hurt feelings, shame, embarrassment or more serious consequences like overt discrimination or ostracization - are very much governed by the era and cultural milieu in which we live. But what we may not always see is that we can get just as outraged and offended today about language usage with no malicious intent - it's just that today we are offended by different words and terms.

Take, for example, the word "queer", which some gays and lesbians embrace while others reject as an insult or slur. Or inadvertent misgendering or deadnaming. Even asking for a person's pronouns is a bit of a sticky wicket, in my opinion. I mean, if a person volunteers or chooses to provide them, that's fine. Personally, I'd prefer not to be asked in the first place. If someone addressed me as "Sir" or Mr. Blogcutter, I'd be a little surprised but I don't think I'd be either offended or flattered. Depending on the particular situation, I might or might not correct them.

But even when folks use the most up-to-date, woke-certified language, there is terminology I find misleading or depersonalizing at best, and mildly-to-moderately insulting at worst.

"Assigned Male at Birth" or"Assigned Female at Birth" implies, to me at least, that the doctor or midwife just flips a coin or uses a random X&Y generator to decide if the just-delivered babe is a boy or a girl, whereas in a majority of cases, there is actually no medical or otherwise specialized expertise needed to determine the baby's biological sex. Yes, mistakes can be made and ambiguities occasionally occur. And certainly there is no way (that I know of) of getting inside the infant's mind to determine their gender identity, any more than we can know if they will ultimately approve of the names that we as parents assign to them.

Then there's the whole range of words we use to describe a person's state of mental health or illness, some colloquial, some technical. The term "manic-depressive" has given way to the term "bi-polar" which I find far less descriptive or evocative - or at least, it's evocative of something other than what's intended. I picture some white conjoined bears living up in the Arctic. Or perhaps a new species of penguin or puffin which is native to both the Arctic and Antarctic?

Another pair of terms I hear a lot these days is "neurodiverse" vs. "neurotypical" (my Autocorrect feature recognizes these words so they must be right, right?) I guess to most of the medical experts, I'm probably "neurotypical". But is ANYBODY truly neurotypical? Is there such an animal? And isn't it human nature to want to be recognized for whatever our particular talents or personal qualities and assets may be?

I'm sure you can think of other examples. Wouldn't it be interesting to know what people of the 22nd or 23rd century will make of the language we use today?

Greater Northshore Bike Connector Map 1.8.0 – 8 June 2025 – is now available on github, along with MEGAMAP 1.7.1. This version is mostly, but not entirely, about Seattle.

Seattle DOT have dropped a new bike map for 2025/2026, but have chosen to show several incomplete and/or entirely unstarted projects as completed. We respectfully disagree with this decision, as it will direct map users to infrastructure which is not actually present for most or all of this year.

Therefore, we have chosen to stay with Seattle 2023 as our Seattle-area base map. We will take on the additional work of updating it over the next year, continuing work we have already been doing. In addition to not showing incomplete/nonexistent infrastructure, this means we will continue to group “Neighbourhood Greenway” and “Healthy Street” under the same common green colour, rather than separating them into green and blue markings.

(Seattle 2025 breaks them out into greens and blues, but unfortunately at the same intensity, meaning there’s no difference for those with colour vision limitations.)

As additional Seattle projects are completed, we will add them to our maps. Once all projects shown on Seattle 2025 are completed, we will most likely transition to Seattle 2025 as our Seattle base map.

There’s only one change since 1.7.1 for outside Seattle, but it’s big:

  • Juanita Drive bike lanes are finally open (again) in Juanita! There’s still a little construction on sidewalks, but functionally, they’re done

I’ve been looking forward to that finally being finished since they started work! The bike lane standard is meaningfully higher than it was before. It’s not consistently up to Kenmore’s standard, but it’s a significant and welcome improvement.

Note that sidewalk construction isn’t quite complete, but there’s very, very little left and should not interfere with biking the route.

Updates since 1.7.1 in Seattle include:

  • 1st Ave NW neighbourhood greenway north of Greenwood to Broadview added
  • S. Walden/Della neighbourhood greenway added
  • Ashworth Ave mix of neighbourhood greenway and ped/bike shared path added
  • N. 120th St. neighbourhood greenway from Ashworth Ave to Corliss Ave added
  • N. 130th St. bike lanes north of Haller Lake added
  • W. Marginal Way SW bike lanes extended north to 17th Ave SW
  • 6th Ave NW steepness indicator in Fremont corrected
  • 6th Ave NW Neighbourhood Greenway corrected (was marked as bike lane)
  • Alki Drive/Beach Drive SW Healthy Street in West Seattle added
  • Maple Leaf Reservoir Neighbourhood Greenway and related ped/bike path added
  • Pike Street bike lane hillclimb over I-5 updated to reflect upgraded status
  • 21st Ave Greenway/Health Street from Columbia to Yesler added
  • Greenway/Healthy Street connection between 30th Ave S east of MLK to Mountains-to-Sound Trail added
  • 39th Ave South Greenway/Healthy Street from south of Othello to Kenyon added
  • One block of Neighbourhood Greenway on 27th Ave NE north of Lake City REMOVED
  • Several small corrections/adjustments, carrying forward Seattle map corrections/adjustments

Rather than the usual MEGAMAP preview, here’s a comparison between on section of Seattle across the two maps.

The same area of map from Seattle 2025 and Greater Northshore/MEGAMAP 2025 June 8. The Seattle map shows a Neighbourhood Greenway which does not yet actually exist. It also inaccurately describes on-the-ground conditions of the Ashworth Ave N Greenway in ways which cause confusion on the ground. The Greater Northshore/MEGAMAP corrects both of those, but fails to distinguish between "Neighbourhood Greenway" and "Healthy Street."

All permalinks continue to work.

If you enjoy these maps and feel like throwing some change at the tip jar, here’s my patreon. Patreon supports get things like pre-sliced printables of the Greater Northshore, and also the completely-uncompressed MEGAMAP, not that the .jpg has much compression in it because it doesn’t.

You know what Boomers shot?
BB guns.

Video games weren't even invented until they were in college (Spacewar, 1962, MIT), and DOOM was first released as shareware in 1993, 30 years later.
Those were our games, damnit.

A shocking number of people will blithely tell us all about the book they read, in English, on an English-language subreddit, and never tell us that they didn't read it in English. I can only catch so many of them - if they don't say "English isn't my first language" or make any obvious foreign language errors then I'll never know. (Some of them say "I read this in my own language" and then don't tell us what that language was.)

Most of these people, if prompted, will tell you what language they read it in. Three times now, I've had to ask twice because they refused to answer the question in a useful way, and every time that person has been Greek.

I thought it was a little funny the second time, but three times is the start of a worrying pattern, especially as it's not at all the most popular not-English language posted there. Maybe there's something going badly wrong with their school system?

(And, sidenote, even if you're certain it was translated from English you still ought to tell us the language it was written in. At least in theory this can help us weed out false positives, although I may be expecting too much of fellow commenters to that subreddit.)

It's time for another episode of America's favorite game show: Rotate! That! Mattress!

Edit: And returning contestant Socchan has done it again! The mattress has been rotated 180°, and the sheets changed at the same time. This time around, Socchan notably chose not to move the dresser at the foot of the bed, seeming to save some extra seconds in the final time and some overall effort. Will Socchan continue this gamble in upcoming appearances? Only time will tell!

Today, as in every episode, Socchan walks away with a mattress that has been slightly rejuvenated and whose lifespan has been extended just a bit longer, as well as the feeling of sleeping on fresh sheets to look forward to.

Join us again in two months for another episode of Rotate That Mattress!

HEY! Any Nova Soctia bike or bike-supportive people – particularly in or near Halifax – here? Time to show up!

ooooooookay so

loooooong time ago I did a lot of work on a CSS overlay for Dreamwidth’s Neutral Good/Evil styles to make them work properly on mobile devices as well as Desktop. If you apply the CSS as Custom CSS to your journal, it keeps working on desktop and starts working right on mobile. All the nightmare noise from Dreamwidth’s old mobile-ish style went away, it got way more information dense, and most of all

no

goddamn

horizontal

scrolling

ever.

Not even with the navbar turned on. It’s stupidly tall, but it no longer scrolls.

(That was some work.)

I handed off that code to Dreamwidth ages ago, but they’ve got a tiny staff and I don’t know how important it ever was to them or even how much made it into the codebase.

Turns out tho’… seems people are still using mine? And I just got an issue report. And I have an edit that fixes it on my machine. And I fixed a subject line issue while I was at it.

sooooo uhhhhhhhh

I guess I’m dropping a new release!

Anybody want to test Version 0.85 before I make it official?

Yes, this is a story about an actual watch. And yes, I know that nowadays it's only old fogeys like me who actually wear a wristwatch (as opposed to pulling out their smartphone) to make sure they're on time for stuff.

Anyway, this relates to the watch I received as a long-service award for 30 years in the federal public service. That was around the time my position was eliminated and they gave me some busy-work for a couple more years until I retired for good.

It's a Birks watch that runs on a battery. Back in 2007, I would go into a Birks store whenever the battery went dead, and the Birks Folks would give me the royal treatment. They'd offer me some bottled water and invite me to browse all the merchandise I probably wouldn't have been able to afford until I got my 40- or 50-years-of-service award, then spirit my watch down to their workshop to change the battery, reset the time and date and buff it up so it looked all shiny and new, emerging 5 or 10 minutes later to return my watch. No charge.

Around 10 years ago, that ended. There was still no charge to change the battery but instead of changing it on the spot, they had to send the watch to some central location (possibly in Montreal?) and contact me a few weeks later when it was ready for pickup.

Determined to continue taking advantage of this perpetual battery deal, I went with the flow. However, this demanded that I get myself a back-up watch to wear during those weeks that my Birks Watch was incommunicado. But wouldn't it be awful if Backup Watch was dependent on a battery too, and Birks Watch Battery and Backup Watch Battery failed at the same time?

Undaunted, I went to The Bay (maybe you've heard of them?) and bought myself a solar- and light-powered watch that needed no battery and no winding. At that time, they actually had on-site jewellers at The Bay who ensured the watch was working properly and removed several links in the bracelet for me, as I have a rather small wrist.

So when Birks Watch's battery failed recently, I put on Backup Watch. That was fine at first, except that the little pin attaching the watch-face to the bracelet fell out and got lost. Luckily I noticed when this happened, so I still had the watch. I put it into my pocket temporarily - which is not ideal for a watch that's powered by light - but fortunately it's still getting adequately fed and is keeping good time for me.

As another little wrinkle, I dug out a really old wind-up watch from a drawer. It still runs, but it doesn't keep good time - it runs unacceptably slow.

Anyway, today I took Birks Watch to Birks in the Rideau Centre. The salesperson politely informed me that their policies had recently changed again, and there was now a $25 charge to replace the battery. I was annoyed but knew it was not her fault. And to be fair, that now-dead battery had lasted well over two years, so if they were going to replace it with one as good as its predecessor, that didn't seem like such a bad deal.

Next step: Ms. Saleswoman asked me to produce a receipt or proof of purchase to show I had in fact bought the watch from them. I told her I had never even had one, as it was gifted to me as a long-service award. Though honestly, I'm pretty sure the watch has Birks written right on the watch face, so that should have been at least a good clue.

That was OK, she said, but did I know roughly the age and value of the watch? Well, I knew the age fairly accurately. I had no idea how much the Government of Canada had paid for it, but I seemed to recall that the last time I needed the battery changed, they had assigned it a value of $200.

So we filled out the requisite form together, I signed on the dotted screen with my fingernail, and she said she was e-mailing me a copy. Could I just check now that it was in my e-mail, in case there were technical problems?

Well, no. I do have a cell phone of sorts, but I don't do e-mail on it. She wrote her name down on a little card and told me to phone her if I didn't receive a copy, so that she could then re-send it. I didn't have to pay the $25 up front.

I got home, and fortunately the e-mail message and copy of the form were there.

What a rigamarole! I still haven't decided what I'll do next time the battery dies.

Isn't the moon dark too,
most of the time?

And doesn't the white page
seem unfinished

without the dark stain
of alphabets?

When God demanded light,
he didn't banish darkness.

Instead he invented
ebony and crows

and that small mole
on your left cheekbone.

Or did you mean to ask
"Why are you sad so often?"

Ask the moon.
Ask what it has witnessed.
