* This year on a whim, I planted little spearmint in my garden. While peppermint is like salt on a slug to me: painful, anathema, backs me shrivel in horror and pain, I've never felt that way about spearmint, which is literally one of two mint varieties I can actually enjoy on occasion. I had no particular plans for this mint. Outside of dried spearmint tea against tummy aches I don't really use it for anything, but I tend to go berserk with start purchases in beginning of season and it was like, a dollar. It is growing beautifully. The whole garden is this year. I'm already harvesting salad out of it.
So I have this spearmint, I'm not doing anything with and about a week ago I plucked a leave to eat while I was watering.
I now know what I'm doing with this mint plant.
When I was growing up, my parents were friends with this women. I've no idea how they met her or how the friendship started up, as she was about a decade older than them and wealthy, while we were always barely hanging on financially with three jobs between my two parents. She was a delight though and visiting her house was kind of magical. It wasn't like the rich people houses I would visit after I got sent to school on scholarship. It was warm and comfortable and full of love.
She'd been married a couple of times and the whole ugly story of that is something I don't want to get into, but the husband of my childhood was a decent man and a very clear upgrade. She had three kids, all teens when I was small. The two girls were far to old to find a child interesting, but they were kind, if that makes sense. The sun was likely a tween when I was a toddler and I quietly loathed him the whole of my growing up for good reason, but he wasn't dangerous, which put him head and shoulders above the boys his age in my neighborhood.
They lived out in the country in this wonderful sprawling house with peach trees and all these interesting nooks to explore and a player piano and a bathroom they'd decorated with the hand and footprints of the children some wonderful summer before I was born. I loved imagining them holding the child versions of the children I knew giggling to press hands and feet to the ceiling. They threw the best Christmas parties with a real nutcracker and games and people taking turns pushing the player piano peddles.
They had a pool. Not a plastic kiddie pool or one of those nasty above ground deelios you had to skim Japanese beetles out of before you swam, but a real, honest to god in the ground outdoor pool. (It had a giant olive painted on the bottom and I still shudder thinking of that olive because of the asshole son, and yes I get the martini joke, but this was the only thing marring my joy visiting the place). Anyway, I remember these beautiful long summer day visits. The sense of whimsey. The waving feild of wheat we'd shirt when going to walk in the graveyard on the other side of it. The frsh peaches. My parents and our hosts laughing. Rising wet and tired out of the pool to drink sweet tea out of fancy glasses in the shade.
It turns out the mint leaf in each glass was spearmint, gently infusing the tea with it's freshness. I hadn't thought of that tea in decades, I don't think.
The sweet tea I made today was of better quality, more complex and a bit fruity. The single spearmint leaf in it was perfection. The tea still tastes like my late parents laughing on a perfect summer afternoon in the ‘70′s when they were still young.
