* It's really bad, and at this point impossible to tease apart the smoke and the other assorted things likely wrong with me at this point. On the up side, I have figured out how the new inhaler works. This is meant to target lung inflammation and is a two week course. The air quality is terrible today and i lost about half of my first meal and likely the meds I took with it because I couldn't stop coughing. The difference between inside and out side is so extreme I nearly passed out fro the shock of it when I shambled out to water the garden. I think I've harvested the majority of this year's tomatoes, though there are still some ripening and a number in the green stages. This really was the best crop I've had since I left home. It was both the most tomatoes and some of the very best I had taste wise in my life. Whatever that heirloom was with the vaguely pointy yellow streaked ones, slightly smaller than romas bore and bore and bore and is still bearing and they were individually full of flavour. The queen though was a fist sized heirloom, dark and lovely and so ripe it was ready to burst, the flavour rich and glorious.
I went to bed very early last night, being too tired and ill to even properly program tumblr. Livia got her usual bed pets. at some point in the dark of the night I shifted to protect my left shoulder. Livia often comes for a pet when I do that, so a cat stepping onto me in search of a love was not a surprise. The surprise was, it wasn't Livia. Tavy has been quietly going to pieces this summer between the loss of a clowder mate, my illness, and the not sleeping on me. I'm not kidding. he needs a lot of attention and cuddles and as hard as I try to give them too him when I'm in the living room/office, it's not close to enough. I think the seriousness of my illness and the short periods I spend in common areas forced him to push through his thing about entering my room since elder Kitty died, like it did the really bad night with the antibiotic last month.
He got his pet. After he was rolling around amongst my legs with his tail lashing excitedly when poor sweet Livia turned up for her third bed cuddle of the night. Another cat was there! She wisely retreated gauging his level of agitation, and tavy slept on me all night, with Livia in her usual sleeping spots around me.
After the first autodialer stole sleep for the day she came back for another try, but he was stretched out on my legs. I tried to convince here there was room on my torso. she wasn't convinced, but after some thought returned and gave it a try. It was fine! I pet her an hour and a quarter with her shoulder pressed to his butt and she was fine. they ended up taking turns all morning while I read, and there was really only trouble towards the end when the coughing started and I needed to do meds. I'm hoping it's a trend. I haven't had this good a cat day since the previous clowder started to die off.
* I finished reading "Jane Austen, Secret Radical" today and it was by far the most interesting and useful thing I've ever read about Jane Austen and her writing. It is very readable and it's take on the books was extremely illuminating. Except for Mansfield, which I think I've only read twice, these are books I know incredibly well. There were things in "Secret Radical" I'd picked up on my self, but there was so much more that I managed to miss. Her chapter on Pride and Prejudice changes everything. No really. This is a book I read three times before graduating high school and countless times since and I'd managed to miss some stunningly essential things. Her chapters on Sense and Sensibility and Emma put a finger on a bunch of things I'd only half picked up on or partially intuited. Apparently, i was only noticing the tip of the Iceberg on Mansfield Park. (Northanger, I'd not picked up all the references, but more than enough to not be missing much). The Persuasion chapter? Oh my god! I have often struggled to explain why Persuasion was my favorite. The mature love certainly. The thing I wrote about recently where I talked about the central straight romance mimicking about a millennia of queer romance, certainly. That's not all of it though. Persuasion just has this vibe that speaks to me. Always has since the first time I read that first page and forward. This "Secret Radical" Book by Helena Kelly? She quantified the vibe. I think I was picking up on a whole bunch of things subconsciously on top of the thinks i had noticed like the sisters named for queens and the cliffs full of fossils and the way it maps with the Napoleonic Wars. Now that she laid it all out for me, I love it even more. Of course this is my favorite: it's relation to time and change and history, it's sense that nothing is fixed and progress is not certain, it's fundamentally... personal focus within a grander sense of everything happening in the world. You will pry my beloved Persuasion from my cold dead hands.
If you are interested in Austen at all? Read this book. no really.

Read this book. no really.
