* Impossible Foods: When I was small, my school Cafeteria made alarmingly good food. No really. The quality started going down when I was in Middle School and one by one the best things disappeared off the menu. I spent years trying to recreate their startlingly good Spanish Omelet until my allergy to eggs got so dire I had to remove yolk entirely from my diet and limit whites severely. I don't even eat meat anymore, and have been vegetarian since... I think 1990. Today's impossible food was their weirdly good sliced hot roast beef on a Kaiser roll with ketchup, perfectly textured, perfectly cooked in their kitchen by the endlessly kind lunchroom staff, the last of the best things they made to disappear, early in my High School career. Lost in time and now indigestible, every now and then the taste and mouth feel float to the top of my memory, impossible. I think tonight it's because I was thinking of my favorite Latin Master, the one who gave me such a charming introduction to Catullus Senior year, and over whom I punched a boy right out of his desk the year before in Greek class.

* The empress Livia has learned that sometimes I hide hard treats in the folds of her desk mesting material. I love watching her seek them out, her nose sharp and paws clever as she uncovers them. I started doing it as a way to keep her from gobbling and to give Tavy a chance to eat his share in peace. Now that her growth is a tad slower, she's no longer as endlessly starving as she was, so instead of rushing to find and devour the treats, she eats her distraction treat, then wanders off to do stuff. Periodically, all evening, she'll come by and search for and discover a snack. She's figured out the Emperor Octavian is no danger to her secret supply. He likes them, but not nearly as much as she does, and his nose isn't even close to as sharp as hers. Those treats are hers and hers alone. Secure in that knowledge, she has become patient.
