* So when I was training to be a teacher, they told us never, ever take a student anywhere in your personal car, no matter what the emergency. If you are alone in a room with a student, leave the door open if there are no hallway windows to let random passersby peer in. (With some students with severe disabilities needing to be taken to the bathroom this isn't always possible, but more than one life skills department I know of used to do pottying in pairs or groups whenever they could. In our profession, even the appearance that something is slightly off is enough to ruin a career so the sensible thing is to make sure there is never any occasion that is even slightly ambiguous regardless of the gender or age of the student. It was geometrically more important for male teachers especially in elementary, given the assumptions people tend to make, but we were all trained that way regardless of our genders and the ages we were teaching. Transparency was safer for them and safer for us. There is reason this is standard in my state. We could still have private conversation about things they might not want generally known like bullying, eating disorders, cheating, drugs, etc. but any one wandering past could see us having a conversation. The newest schools have hallway windows, which I adore as you can watch your kids when they are spread out for projects and admins can check to see if everything is okay without coming in and disrupting things. It seems to me that this would be a much better practice in a variety of industries. Particularly Hollywood. Just saying.
