* I am in the habit of "correcting" in my head words I hear that are the wrong ones on news programs. I routinely correct mistaken country pronunciations and the word "nuclear" when it's pronounced "Nukyoular" because I don't want to mispronounce things myself from hearing them mispronounced often. I also change words in my head as a gloss when the wrong one is used to push a political agenda. For example, when the BBC calls people fleeing the violence in Syria "migrants" when those are clearly refugees under international law, my brain auto corrects as it were, or when a Republican deliberately mispronounces "Democratic" as I micro-agression, or when Republicans try to dehumanize undocumented people as "illegals". I do this with slurs too. I do it because I never want to get in the habit of lazily treating the mislabeling people for political and/or bigoted reasons as normal. I feel that if I do the corrective in my head it keeps me from falling into those ways of thinking. This is also why in my journal, when I see police attacking unarmed protesters, I say the "police rioted." It's a correct use of the word "riot," unlike the way the media unthinkingly labels the people being attacked as rioters if the people being attacked aren't white. Similarly, I see the police killing unarmed innocent children, I call that murder, because that clearly is. I use the words this way because the media doesn't. For example, they say "a child was killed." No, two grown men chose to do a drive by on a child playing in the snow, murdering him, then lied to cover it up. Because pretending humans didn't do it on purpose makes it an unpreventable disaster, when clearly that murder was preventable.
Anyway, I just caught my brain auto correcting "Sean Spicer said" to "Sean Spicer lied."
