* ISIS has captures hundreds of Yazidi women. Something like 40 thousand Yazidis have fled into the Kurdish part of Syria. Others are cut off and being supplied by air. Kurdish forces are taking casualties fighting ISIS generally and trying to protect threatened minorities. Yes, I saw the President's statements on both days.

* I am notoriously bad at names. People's names, street names, author names, book names. People ask me if I've read X author or Y book, I often have no idea. Sounds vaguely familiar? Maybe? I'm sure it looks like I'm lying, but I'm not. Maybe I read them, maybe I heard people talking about them or read a review. Give me a story, or an incident from a story, and I can likely tell you if a read it, and quite possibly where I was, but names frequently mean nothing to me.

I came across Perilous Guard on a list of Tam Lin and Tam Lin adjacent stories and ordered it from the library. I recognized it a few paragraphs in, though I read it 30+ years ago. Even knowing the bones of the story, it holds up surprisingly well. I'd gladly recommend it to anyone liking mysteries and Tudor era set historical novels. It has an intelligent, brave, and sensible female protagonist. Being written in the '70's, it's white and heteronormative, but given the setting (isolated manor in the middle of nowhere) I'm not cranky about it the way I would be if it were set in London or a major port city. It also partakes of the cryptic mental illness trope and references "gypsies," so I can't give it full marks, but I do like it. It's well written and still a fun read, even with me knowing the secrets in advance.
