Jun. 26th, 2013 04:45 am* Conditions are such in the flooded area of India, that they are having to do mass cremations. They take pictures and DNA samples in the hope there are surviving relatives to identify them. It is sensible, but heartbreaking.
* The emir of Qatar has abdicated. One of his sons is now in charge at 33.
* The fuck just happened in Australian politics? No seriously, I’d love someone more current to explain.
* SCOTUS De Facto gutted the Voting Rights Act by sending it back to Congress. I am honestly too angry to comment coherently. Rachel Maddow does a good quick summing up:

When I was helping out with adult ESL, it was a big issue. We were getting a whole lot of indigenous folks from Mexico and Guatemala and the services weren't set up for them. We had Spanish and Ukrainian interpreters, but none for the indigenous languages. It was the same with the organizations that helped immigrants. The numbers were going up every year and we were so worried for them. I was doing this round about the turn of this century. I've a feeling out reach hasn't caught up with demand.

* I already did my personal Paula Deen post, but there's something I'm seeing that needs addressing. People are saying we should give her a pass because of her age. I don't think so. She's 60. That means the Civil Rights movement was happening the entire time she was old enough to speak in sentences. Sure she was raised in an environment of pervasive racism, and that can run deep. But you know what? She was an adult woman the entire time I've been alive. She has had more than enough time to reassess the crap she was fed as a child and to educate herself about the issues. I'm not giving her a pass because she chose to stay ignorant on that scale. Everyone makes mistakes at some point in their lives and we still live in a system chock full of biases and the reinforcement of stereotypes. I can see giving her a pass for the first, say 18 years, but she's had more than 40 since then to grasp that slavery was bad and there are words decent people choose never to use. This leads me to believe that she chose on purpose to learn nothing and to expend no empathy at all. I have zero sympathy for willful ignorance as an excuse for doing other people harm.

* I break my left pinky toe a lot. It's fragile from being broken so often. (That thing about breaks being stronger that they told us in elementary school science? A myth). I've snapped it in half twice, the second time in an S-shape twisted break. I've had more hairline fractures than I can count. Doctor's don't treat hairlines on toe, but I've broken that toe so often, I am way too familiar with the sensations involved with breaks. Today, I lost four hours of sleep to what I strongly suspect is a hairline fracture on my pinkie toe: the right one. This is what passes for a plot twist in my life these days.
