Feb. 12th, 2011 02:45 am* Mubarak stepped down, but his scary ass vice president isn't. Still, as someone who watched Tienanmen Square, I can only rejoice.
* Of course, large numbers of American "conservatives" are coming out against democracy in egypt, on the grounds that if you hold elections, sometimes someone you don't like wins, so clearly, the Egyptians should not be allowed to decide for themselves. This does not surprise me as it's a lot of the same folks who are against people who disagree with them holding office or having the right to vote here. Why do so many Republican politicians and fox "news" reporters hate freedom so much? The basic idea that makes democracy work is that sometimes peeople you don't like win, but you always can try again next time.
* I keep thinking of Year of Living Dangerously and Kumar's speech towards the end about his desire for freedom and his inability to understand why he is considered less deserving of it because he happened to be born in Indonesia instead of the West. I'd show you the speech, but I could find a copy on the internet, and my copy of the movie is VHS and thayt's a lot of scrolling and hunting, alas.

I have a problem with their light treatment of the first woman's brain damage. That's pretty much a recipe for quick death for her or those around her in the situations they suggest. Being literally fearless makes it hard to properly assess risk. It's dangerous, not cute.
