* Mubarak stepped down, but his scary ass vice president isn't. Still, as someone who watched Tienanmen Square, I can only rejoice.

* Of course, large numbers of American "conservatives" are coming out against democracy in egypt, on the grounds that if you hold elections, sometimes someone you don't like wins, so clearly, the Egyptians should not be allowed to decide for themselves. This does not surprise me as it's a lot of the same folks who are against people who disagree with them holding office or having the right to vote here. Why do so many Republican politicians and fox "news" reporters hate freedom so much? The basic idea that makes democracy work is that sometimes peeople you don't like win, but you always can try again next time.

* I keep thinking of Year of Living Dangerously and Kumar's speech towards the end about his desire for freedom and his inability to understand why he is considered less deserving of it because he happened to be born in Indonesia instead of the West. I'd show you the speech, but I could find a copy on the internet, and my copy of the movie is VHS and thayt's a lot of scrolling and hunting, alas.

* Since Wednesday, Mache has systematically claimed all her favorite mests by sprawling in the an taking a long nap in each. Normality restored.

I have a problem with their light treatment of the first woman's brain damage. That's pretty much a recipe for quick death for her or those around her in the situations they suggest. Being literally fearless makes it hard to properly assess risk. It's dangerous, not cute.

* Supernatural: )

* Rachel Maddow on "Brokaw Momments. I remember all of these. I admit, I wept a little at the footage of excited Egyptians celebrating.:

* To my amusement, there was a reference to Christian Kane in the Leverage commentary, where the person speaking describes Chris and his best friend fighting in the basement for fun as kids. Me: Wait, there are people who didn't fist fight/wrestle with a friend for fun as a kid? O.o

They also tell me there are people who wouldn't tour a Level four bio containment lab if offered the chance, and who wouldn't parachute out of a plane for fun if they could afford it. Sometimes normal people completely baffle me.

* Why I'll never understand high fashion exhibit three, (Scroll down for video. I couldn't get it to embed properly): http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2011/02/the_fug_girls_j-woww_johnny_we.html

To be clear, I get the 80's new wave style women's hair and dresses. Mostly. It's really stuff like the guys in glitter booty shorts and a giant pretzel/banana that costs more than I made in a year teaching.

* RM found, useful thing on what's going on in Syria: http://english.aljazeera.net/indepth/features/2011/02/201129103121562395.html

"The Iraqi refugees are a cautionary tale for Syrians," Landis says. "They have seen what happens when regime change goes wrong. This has made Syrians very conservative. They don't trust democracy."
