Would they be okay with Historical or Fantasy Romance? (One of the joys of the Romance genre is you know there will be a happy ending. And there's a lot of variety and diversity if you know where to look.) Are they okay with YA? Oooh, how about Urban/Modern Fantasy? (If they're okay with Urban Fantasy they should go get Heroine Complex and Not Your Sidekick immediately. Possibly yesterday. Heroine Complex also has a sequel Heroine Worship)
Also, let me poke at my shelves. Are there examples of things they've liked but have already read? Are they wanting silly and fluffy or more serious, just with no death and a happy ending?
