* The footage of murdered families in Homs is terrible in ways I have no words for. Meanwhile the government forces have moved on to bombard civilian neighborhoods in Idlib to continue the sectarian genocide.

* A white neighborhood watch guy shot an unarmed black teenager a few blocks from his own house for the crime of being a black teenager out at night in a gated community. The boy was carrying skittles and ice tea home from a store. The guard saw him walking home and called 911 to report a "suspicious person." The dispatcher told him to stay in his car. Instead, he got out of his car and chased the kid down to execute him. The murderer is claiming self defense on the grounds that the unarmed boy put him in fear of hos life, even though he was a grown man in a car with a gun and could have driven away from the oblivious unarmed teen who mere existence was so threatening. It looks more to me like he thought it would be fun to hunt a boy and did so. It looks to me like he shot Trayvon Martin because he could, not because a boy carrying home skittles was any kind of realistic threat.

* American Samoa: all six votes went to Mitt Romney, so he gets 9 more delegates. No really.

* So would I: http://psybelle.livejournal.com/722620.html

* I have figured out why I am having such a hard time with my alarm clock. It's not broken, rather, the louder of the two settings (which is not loud enough) sounds so much like the man upstairs taking a shower that when I am half awake, I fail to differentiate.

* I managed to forage today and spent nearly all the money I had left this month on yet another type of cable in the hopes of having a working DvD player in the living room. Fingers crossed.

* The Police Charity shake down is way more aggressive this year. Usually, I'm on a fixed income is enough. This time, he started to hard sell me on a low amount donation. If I had money to give them, I'd already have spent it on much needed replacement towels and bedding.

* Cat Moment: I am alarmed by a kerfuffle. Hector runs past with a bag full of hot dogs around his neck, the junior beasties in hot pursuit. By the time I was up and ready to rescue, they'd all darted back the other way to my room. I did manage to free him of the meat and he had a nice hide after. The problem is, it was simultaneously hilarious and scary. hilarious because it was like something out of a cartoon. Scary because Hector is a danger to himseldf and others when he panics and he could have choked or seriously hurt himself. he'd fine, BTW, and was asleep on a shelf when I typed this.

* Speaking of towels, the big red and white beach towel is so threadbare there is now a hole in it. It's a little sad to be throwing it out soon. (I must replace it first, which I can't do this month). I got it during the Summer of '87. My boys and I had a day off, so we piled into the big yellow oldsmobile and I drove them all to Wildwood. It the rush to get ready, I forgot to bring a towel, so I picked this one out as the least objectionable at the first shop we hit. We had not realized until we got on the beach that the only black people on the beach were my friends. While it made them easy to spot in a crowd, it was understandably unnerving for Vaughn and Jon. Still, we had a petty good time until the guy who would soon be my lover got sick on a centrifuge, and we had a hell of a time getting him back to the car, and a hell of a time finding the highway, me trying to drive and stroke his hair soothingly at the same time while the other guys failed to navigate in any helpful way. The towel's been with me ever since with it's bitter sweet associations to that Summer and the things that came after in my last full year in Pennsylvania. I hold it and I think of sun and sand and coconut scented lotion, of fudgy wudgy ice cream and waves, and gulls, of the pier at Wildwood and high school passions and friends long gone into separate lives.
