* TW: Pet illness/death. I am not generally sentimental about platys. They are not bright enough to have personalities. They are basically swimming reproductive systems. The cats and I enjoy watching them swim about and they are very cheap since if one has sufficient elogia, they expand in numbers to fill the available space. I don't bother to name them, as there are frequently hundreds in a given year. They die of all sorts of things. I have fish medicine for tank wide emergencies, but these aren't like bettas where one can reasonably do something if something not obviously fatal happens to one and they have personalities and they can live 5-7 years if you take good care of them. Platys die. Still, one occasionally stands out. There was a male I had for five years with a congenital defect I used to root for and who survived a move and a number of tank evictions.
The oldest of my platys is a big blue female. About a month and a half ago, I thought I was going to lose her to birth complications. They are pretty much constantly pregnant and sometimes things go wrong. A tube gets blocked or the like, and they are too small and fragile to help. I noticed something had gone terribly wrong with a birthing and the fry was stuck. she kept swimming and eating but the whole situation looked hideous from behind. I assumed that was it for her, as the situation continued to drag on. About a week and half after I first noticed the problem during feeding, it seemed to have solved itself rather miraculously. I was pleased she'd made it. Then this month I spotted a touch of fungus on her head. On further inspection I found a spot on one of the boy's tails. We're down to one 20 filter, which is on the other 20. I do frequent changes, but it happens. I suspect now they were the ones who infected the bathroom colony as I'd done a restock from that tank about a month before they came down with the fungus, but it moved faster in the smaller tank. The thing is, the infected twenty had a ton of young fry in it, the ladies having been particularly prolific, but there was nothingg for it. The fungus medicine is strong and fish, particularly fry die of it, but fungus will take a whole tank, so I dosed them twice. (One waits for days between dosing). I haven't seen any adult bodies, but I am pretty sure most of the fry died and were eaten. I've seen some larger fry since the second dose, but not many.
The visible fungus is gone, the largest female is eating and swimming well, and today i started changing out the medicine water. If the medicine hasn't killed them (I won't know for another week or so), then the colony will survive.
I am sad to lose all those fry, but the colony is what matters in the end.
* Today I changed the sick tank, folded laundry, did dishes, switched fly strips, and then spent most of the evening setting up Monday's ebay auctions. Why is the auction process so exhausting? Monday is meant to be forage. Let us hope my act is sufficiently together to go.
