* TW: Pedophilia. For the last couple of days I've been watching Leaving Neverland. It's a hard thing to watch, but I think it's really important. On a basic level, I think it helps survivors and their families to be able to tell their truths. I think it's especially important given the death threats and hatred aimed at them in this case. I think it's important because the long form allowed them to really show how the grooming process works. (I was someone who saw the Oprah interview about a year before the first accusations came out and thought, "Oh shit! He's molesting them! Given the neighborhood whee I grew up I am really good at spotting grooming behaviors.) I think parents need to see this to better understand how they can be seduced. It's a gradual thing, and while it's easy to look at the end result and wonder what they were thinking, hearing how it happened makes it both easier to understand and guard against. I think it's important too see the messy and complicated feelings that these men had then and have now as adults about what happened to them. I know this was the hardest part, but I'm glad the men were so clear and explicit about what was done to them, not for any prurient reason, but because I think it's important for the people who tried to poopoo or minimize the damage or who called them liars to look into their faces and hear them talk about it in detail. These terrible things effected their whole families including their eventual wives. It was utterly devastating to them personally. The damage wasn't small, the acts committed over and over for a long stretch of time were utterly inexcusable and disgusting.

I am so damned tired of men like Michael Jackson, Roman Polanski, R. Kelly, Jeffery Epstein, etc. getting away with these terrible crimes because they are rich and famous. I am tired of the endless round of victim blaming and survivors being treated as disposable.

If this documentary can make it so that next time the survivors get support and empathy and the perpetrator is vilified instead of the other way round it, I'm all for showing it. Being a witness is important. Listening to the words of survivors is important. No amount of genius can ever justify these atrocities.
