* I have started hearing some things that suggest now would be a good time to remind folks that UVA and the City of Charlottesville were targeted by white supremacists because they were trying to do the right thing as far as taking down confederate monuments and taking steps to make things better and more inclusive. Charlottesville has a Democratic mayor. The businesses and people living in Charlottesville are not the enemies and many of the counter protesters live there. Boycotting Charlottesville and UVA is the opposite of standing up for decency and justice, just as boycotting and harassing Russian and Ukrainian immigrants who fled here was the exact wrong to protest Putin's anti-gay policies.

It is incredibly important that we support the victims rather than scapegoat them. I know our brains make associations that aren't entirely rational, but we can reign that shit in if we're aware of it.

* Six are known to be dead in a series of earthquakes in Chili. A large number of people have had to evacuate between the quakes and the fear of a tsunami which luckily didn't arrive. The hospital in the hardest hit area has been evacuated. The President has declared a state of emergency. Luckily, they had a good earthquake plan in place, as it could have been much worse.

* Médecins sans Frontières is reporting more than 80 dead in an Ebola epidemic in Guinea, with 78 considered official by the government, out of 122 infected. They have cases in multiple separate locations. Given the closeness of some out breaks to borders with neighboring country, they are keeping an eye out in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Liberia has 7 suspected cases with four dead. Sierra Leone thinks they have five, none confirmed. Senegal has closed the border in hopes of preventing spread. This is a terrible way to die and is equipment intensive to keep from spreading as it spreads so easily through touch. (Masks, gloves, protective gowns and all disposable equipment are expensive). MSF is in process of sending two planes worth of supplies, and has set up some isolation wards, but they are really stretched due to the geographic spread involved.

I'm not seeing a disaster specific donate link, but they are taking donations here based on your country of origin. These folks are incredibly brave, often helping refugees in conflict zones like South Sudan and CAR. (Seriously, their clinic in a South Sudanese refugee camp got over run a couple months ago and they were lucky to make it out with the survivors. These are some brave people who could be getting rich with no risk at all). They are the people most experienced in handling Ebola outbreaks specifically in that part of Africa and are doing good work. If you want to help, go here: http://www.msf.org/donate

* They have found 28 of the dead at Oso, 22 of them identified so far. They are still looking for twenty people. As bad as that is, it means that the original estimate of how many people were buried was much larger than the actual number.

I am giving up on Bitten for the same reason. (I liked two people one of whom died). Also, I tend to forget I'm watching it because of the boring (I now have a rule that it I try and fail to watch a scene three times, I just go read the Fangs for the fantasy recap instead of continuing to try to pay attention) and it's made almost entirely of tropes I hate. I'm three weeks behinds because I have no fucks to give. I'm bailing out, I think.

* I am making progress on the box and furniture tetris despite the whole cough until I nearly pass out thing, but I need long breaks, hence the archaeology round up stuff. I now have music and TV in my room. I had been willing to sacrifice two bed base drawers and two long dresser drawers to having a place to put the TV where I can watch in bed, but it turns out I can use all the drawers, though they are less convenient. For the first time in my adult life I have more clothes drawers than I need and will be storing other things in there when I get time. Things really are slowly moving into place, though it likely doesn't look like it just yet.

* Most of this post was written before bed last night. Tibicina, her gentleman, and I had a nice lunch at the tea salon and a visit at my new digs. Greenwick and I packed some odds and ends, brought those over, and assembled the patio shelving. There was pho for dinner and some shopping after. I'm pretty much done in. The movers come Friday afternoon, so tomorrow will be getting things ready for them instead of me trying to do it tonight. The outdoor shelving looks good and works the way I imagined, so we can bring over the rest of the planters and garden stuff Sundayish. (I did call the management company to pre-clear the storage shelves and they are a better fit with the rules than a lot of the things I see on other patios, but someone can always take exception and the rules could be changed to specifically exclude my shelving. One of the upstairs neighbors at minimum are jerks and they routinely through rotting garbage off their patio so it's strewn all over our walkway. Given what a dick maneuver it is to ambush us with mystery fluids and rotting vegetables I have zero expectation for civility in other matters. As there are multiple floors and I haven't caught them at it, I don't know which of them it is).

* Props to Criminal Minds for knowing what the actual Star Chamber was. In common vernacular "Star Chamber Justice" means tyrannical and unfair. Want to know why? the Star Chamber was the only court in England where a commoner could get a fair hearing in a land dispute with a noble. (The practice up until then was for the noble to judge his own case, as he doubled as a magistrate and no one cared that this was a conflict of interest. Not suprisingly, the nobles always found in their own favor). The rich and powerful considered this incredibly unfair and so the name of the fairest court in the country got smeared and dragged in the mud. This phrase is still used incorrectly as most people have no idea what the Star Chamber was: a court designed to right wrongs those with power inflicted on ordinary people. In seems we could use a little of the true star chamber Justice in the United States, seeing how many homes have been stolen by the banks in illegal foreclosures in the last few years, for example.

Riiiiiight. Since no one with any sense can think that, I can only assume they are lying and trying to deny the president a "win" at the expense of making the world safer. Why do the right thing, which is wait to see what the final agreement will be before trying to tear it up, when you can do real damage to the peace process and deny innocent civilians medicine they need to survive?

* I was exhausted so went to bed early. It was to no avail as the Con Crud is really ramping up on me and I was too sick to sleep. The meds I would normally take to ease some of the discomfort were right out as i had to go let the floor guys in again. They are expecting to finish the sealant today. The foundation looked beautiful thanks to their efforts yesterday. I have scheduled the laminate crew to come Friday, when everything should be dry. Progress! Now if I could just get some sleep, or at least be not so brain foggy so I could sort out the rest of the bureaucracy. Unfortunately,a later attempt to sleep yeilded only about two hours divided into two chunks.

* LM used to have a mest on top of a particular living room book case. She has a preference for shredded paper bedding. At some point, I put a cat sized cardboard flat up there and stocked it with tissue paper packing material. For most of a year, this was her favorite mest. It was great! She could root around in the crinkly paper. She could push it up against the sides to make it fit her body. She could use it as a pillow. She had a good strategic view of much of the common area. It smelled pleasantly of catnip and clowder. Bliss! At some point, she topped sleeping there several months ago. I moved it to the Pettin Throne a week or more ago. While she was wary at fist, she soon succumbed to the allure. Mache also discovered it and the took turns sleeping in it. She began to be nervous about whether that was territory she was allowed in, perching next to the box for pettins, poor thing. Today, I came out to discover she'd stolen a tissue box and made a mest on the floor of the living room out of 15-20 tissues. I cleaned up the mest, but put the box over where she made her mest. She immediately curled up in there for a nap. At some point she got up to do cat things. Mache was all, "Hey! Free mest!" and promptly curled up in it. LM wated, and waited, and waited. She went and had a nap on her bookshelf. Mache slept on. She went and glared and Mache. Mache slept on. She came and got a long pet on the Pettin Throne. Mache slept on. I'm going to try putting it on her old spt in the hope she will try napping there, but I may have to find another flat of the right shape and start a new tissue paper mest so both girls can have one.

Fear not, Mache decided to get her pettin on and LM got her box back.

* I already did my personal Paula Deen post, but there's something I'm seeing that needs addressing. People are saying we should give her a pass because of her age. I don't think so. She's 60. That means the Civil Rights movement was happening the entire time she was old enough to speak in sentences. Sure she was raised in an environment of pervasive racism, and that can run deep. But you know what? She was an adult woman the entire time I've been alive. She has had more than enough time to reassess the crap she was fed as a child and to educate herself about the issues. I'm not giving her a pass because she chose to stay ignorant on that scale. Everyone makes mistakes at some point in their lives and we still live in a system chock full of biases and the reinforcement of stereotypes. I can see giving her a pass for the first, say 18 years, but she's had more than 40 since then to grasp that slavery was bad and there are words decent people choose never to use. This leads me to believe that she chose on purpose to learn nothing and to expend no empathy at all. I have zero sympathy for willful ignorance as an excuse for doing other people harm.

* Long time readers will remember that my Grandmother's sewing machine got stolen with Squirrel's car the Winter before last. What I need relly is a simple sturdu machine that does a reliable straight seam with a minimum of drama in both forward and reverse. They stopped making machines that do that before I was born depite the high demand for them. The simplest machine I could find was way more complex and less sturdy. Greenwick and I have been trying to get it work since, like, last October while the mending has been piling up. It is like the person who designd the machine has never sewed in their life and was working from a vague description. Everything is vastly harder and more complex than it needs to be specifically to make the machine harder to use. It is a pain in the ass to wind the bobbin, to string the thread, etc.. Whoever designed it decided it would make more sense to insist on people using a complicated fiddly hard to use "automatic needle threader" than to simply position the needle slightly more forward so people could hand thread it in seconds instead of taking up to ten minutes to use the "easier" method. We decided fuck it and are hand threading anyway.

It turns out that the main issue I was having is the machine was designed on the assumption that chimps would be using it or maybe some of Bujold's Quadies. No really. You need three hands and either a foot or a forth hand to sew a simple forward and backward seam. This is because unlike a simple forward/backward level like I'm used to, they assume you have a third hand for holding the reverse button down, while using a hand or fut to work the pedal and two hands to guide/force the fabric under the needle as the feed dogs don't actually move the fabric sufficiently to get a proper stitch pattern going. Similarly, rather than controlling speed with the pedal you have to pre-set one of three speeds, none of which are ones you'd have picked given any sort of choice. I am used to varying speed as I go with fast on straight, easy bits and slower on fiddly bits or curves. To vary while sewing, you need a forth or fifth hand and to like the preset three choices. Maybe it was really meant for an Octopus or baby Cthulhu, but that's an even weirder business plan than sewing machines for chimps so I can't even begin to guess why they chose that instead of assuming humans would be buying and using the machines.

Compare this to my old simple sturdy machine where instead of wasting half an hour on a Byzantine bobbin winding protocol, you put the bobbin on the spinal, un-threaded the needle, started the bobbin, wound it at super high speed, cut thread and popped the bobbin back in, re-threaded the needle and were ready to sew in five minutes or less. Pictue me sewing even heavy fabrics like velvet and upolstery fabric myself quickly with no drama, instead of getting a friend to sit behind the machine and push the reverse button while I sewed the seam while I wrestle with tee shirt cotton like I'm trying to sew silk.

Seriously, the fuck?!?

It was still incredibly painful and exhausting just to drop off library books and pick up a few things at the store like a block away. Even with handicapped parking and the car. I spent the weekend using the serious meds and resting up. My legs aren't constantly buckling, bu the pain is still pretty intense even by my standards. Today I needed to go get blood work, get more groceries, library, and pharmacy. I hadn't much left by the time I got home, but furniture needed rearranging and groceries needed to get put away. I ended up using the best of the pain meds after I got home, and it still took all evening and nearly all of the spoons. I still haven't sat down to do notes and skim for some data I need for the Shifters. I am clearly too tired at this point for mentally precise work, which that is. Their son will have to live with this the whole rest of his life.

* Even though I personally am not interested in team sports, I am extremely pleased Jason Collins came out, not just for his own improved quality of life and that of the folks who will likely soon follow him, and all the kids for whom having him out and visible will be a life saver, but for another reason. We know that by all objective measure African Americans are more likely to pro-gay rights by a statistically significant margin than the general populace. Despite this, the myth that African Americans are more homophobic persists along with the fallacious belief that gay is somehow a white thing even though it isn't. In the wake of Mr. Collins coming out, there was not only lots of images of a gay African American man on news outlets and social media, but there continue to be lots of black straight celebrities and allies from the processional sports community out modelling how to be a decent human being and just generally being visible in their support. I really hopes seeing all these people out there being vocal will help change perceptions and help people remember that stereotypes of African Americans put forward by the likes of Dan Savage continues to be a lie.

* One of the many, many athletes out modelling how to be a decent human being in the wake of Mr. Collins coming out is an NFL player named LeRoy Butler, who was told he was no longer welcome to come speak against bullying because he he said something nice about Mr. Collins. He is standing on his principles for the sake of all the kids out there who are being bullied over their orientation or perceived orientation.

* Greenwick helped me figure out how to get the DvD player to work in the living room, which means I can show people films and they can hear and see. Yay! I showed him most of the Celluloid Closet documentary. (We had to stop just before the Philadelphia segment and he missed the final montage of positive representation and same sex couple expressing affection. I had not seen this since it first came out in theaters. I got the library to buy the Celluloid Closet and Paris is burning. Celluloid had six people already in line for it when I checked. I've never seen Paris is Burning and hope to watch it this weekend at some point. It already has three people in line behind me. This suggest I'm not the only one who wanted very much to see these films. It makes me happy I suggested films for which there was demand, but it never occurred to the library to buy.) If anyone has important landmark LGBTQ cinema classics to suggest, please do in comments. I love the idea of improving the selection for the younger folks coming up. I feel like it's good to know about our history and culture and movies are part of that.

Later there was gaming. The Shifters did a hit for Karl the Great so they took the honor hit for killing a dude instead of him. The are gradually learning the game mechanics. Squirrel and I are still rusty, but it's improving. I know what we are doing next week; long term plans are jelling; I still need to look up a bunch of Bastet and Gurahl specific stuff, but progress is happening. I really need to sit down for a few hours and take notes and organize things. It keeps not happening.

To do wise for RL: I really need to do a grocery run when I'm not hugely pressed for time, preferably with the grocery list and to take a quick journey to the fish store.

* Things continue bad in Cyprus. There is a 300 Euro limit on withdraws, which is making it hard for people to pay bills. It's pretty much long term borked International investment and local business, since the banking system isn't safe or useful. Along with Greece, this is setting a scary precedent for the ways the strong Eurozone economies can decide to randomly destroy, likely for generations, the smaller ones. If the can come in and do this to Cyprus, what is the next country's economy they will dismantle as punishment?
