* Friday: I got my vaccine appointment! First shot is Monday! As a result do not expect postings on Monday after 9AM Pacific, as I have to go at an inconvenient time in my sleep cycle and I expect the shot to exhaust me. My plan is to pick up my library curbside after then go right home to bed and stay there

In other medical news my doctor won the second appeal over a higher dosage of a med Medicare hates paying for at all on Wednesday afternoon. It came late Thursday afternoon. There is already improvement.

In yet more medical news, I got test results back about fifteen minutes after the vaccine appointment scheduling. They are likely going to need to investigate my whole digestive system, a thing I dread as I remember what it was like when they did some of that in the 90's. I also am not even a little surprised in needs doing. Sigh. Trying set up appointments is next week's problem though.

Bonus? I lost hours of work I a hard crash and had to rewrite this amoung all the rest. Sigh.

* I watched Peninsula and I figured out what went wrong.

1. The obvious thing I guessed before I watched it, is a problem, but not the main one. Still, it needs saying: The Train to Busan is a perfect movie. It really is. The solid world building makes the thing compelling from the start. It's beautifully shot and acted. It has a strong thematic thread running through it. The timing is flawless, with action and quiet moments in a perfect balance designed to keep the viewer engaged. Most of all, it has heart. The viewer really cares what happens to the people, and those character stories are perfectly twined with the thematic thread. It's incredibly compelling and rewatchabe.

It is absolutely impossible to catch that kind of magic in a sequel. Viewers will want to feel that way again and you can't win no matter what you do. You can do the same thing again, which will be tired and derivative. you can do something different which will inevitably disappoint and/or piss off fans. It's why second albums are often a mess too. So they started this project with that against them.

2. But here is the real mistake: They picked the wrong protagonist. No really. If one hadn't watched Train to Busan this would have been a solid post apocalyptic action story with a really long boring start. Picture Escape from New York and Road warrior mashing up with a Korean Speculative Fiction Movie. It's the long boring bit that is the issue for this as a stand alone set in the same world as Train to Busan and Seoul station, and it isn't the actors' faults.

Why doesn't the first part of the movie work? Because they picked the wrong protagonist. Think about it. Where is the emotional heart of the movie? Where it always is the best of this kind of film coming out of Korea (For example: The Host, Snowpiercer, Train to Busan, Flu) with the family. It may be small (a parent and daughter) and/or broken and/or found but that's where the heart is. The family add and lose people along the way, but that heart carries the viewer through. When does Peninsula start getting interesting? When the girls turn up and you have the family that's the narrative center for most of the rest of the film.

I'm not saying it's all bad up to that point. There is that beautiful, haunting, Checkov's gun moment on the way in, for example, but mostly? It's filler.

So here's how to fix it. Just put the main narrative focus on the Mom and family. No really. It cuts most of the boring bits right out. Let me show you how.

I kept thinking about the Birthday cake with "Happy Birthday Lesbian" on it after I read the article. I was thinking about the queer children walking past the display case seeing a positive message they may not see much of at home. I was thinking about the first person who came out to me when I was fifteen. It was not really surprise because she was classic butch as it got. English wasn't hr first language and as a result I needed clarification, so I asked if she was lesbian or bisexual. She didn't know either word, so I explained and I will never forget her face.

It was the first time she'd heard a word for herself that wasn't an insult. It meant so much to her to finally have words like that that simply described identity without all the pain and baggage that came with the slurs in her first language.

It was the '80's. I'd been searching the TV guide since I learned to read for anything with a queer person in it, but I had a lot of friends my age who didn't live in homes where they could do that, who had only hate speech or no words at all to accurately describe themselves. There is a reason so many nonbinary folk my age picked "androgyne," since you could find it easily in an elementary library or in TV discussions of fashion trends in the '70's and '80's.

There's a lot more access to words and positive portrayals with the Internet and more distributed viewing of media, but still...

I keep thinking about some kid at the second Dairy Queen, seeing a message someone wrote to her lesbian sister in celebration, and that matters.

* Friday: My suspicion that Poverty clinic mass mailing their COVID vaccine plan a couple days ago was a sign that my state was moving into phase 1B is correct, as I just got a notification from the state that we are. I'm 1B under the state plan, so fingers crossed for me getting one soon.

I stayed up for another round of phone bureaucracy today, plus there were a lot of medical calls incoming. They fixed my car just under the wire. It came in about halfway between lowest and highest estimate and they had to change gaskets and what not while cleaning out the system, but the expensive valve was fine. I suspect they discounted their labour, but I don't know that they did.

I did dishes and too boxes today o top of everything and now have the shakes, but i have a working car and two clean litterboxes, so that's something.

"Slightly complicating matters is the fact that members of the Slim family recently issued a statement supporting the execution of Mitchell—initially, court filings revealed that the daughter of Slim and mother of the child “passionately” argued against the death penalty. But as Navajo Nation Council delegate Carl Slater told the Navajo Times on Friday, the matter at hand is not one of whether the victims’ family’s wishes are being adhered to in terms of the levied justice but that the nation’s sovereignty was purposefully ignored and diminished by the U.S. “The Navajo Nation never opted in to impose the death penalty,” he told the Times. “It is not the decision of one person or one group of family to make the decision.”

Cases like these—ones that are extremely messy, grisly, and entangled in centuries of convoluted federal Indian law—are the kind that are meant to test both the American legal system and America’s commitment to tribal sovereignty. It’s a test that the country routinely, often gleefully, fails. It chose vengeance and violence. It opted for a flashy display of what it has decided to define as justice. And it did so against the express wishes of a sovereign nation. The case of Mitchell now stands as a harbinger of future federal action in Indian Country, should the U.S. federal government continue carrying out death penalty sentences. With Mitchell’s life now stolen by the state, America has tested a new boundary in its historic effort to undermine sovereignty at all turns and at all costs. Now it knows full well how to kill Native people convicted of crimes on tribal lands, sovereignty be damned."

* Y'all might remember The whole can't keep the antibiotic down situation last week. It was meant to be a ten day run. I managed a week. I'm sick again with the same symptom set. Sigh. Yes, I'm calling the doctor. Don't panic though. Yes, sick is scary especially now in someone with my health history, but really, odds are it's the lung infection rebounding and not something new.

In other news, Tavy is still refusing to go in my room except that one night when I was really sick. he is All Over Me when I'm out in the common areas, to the point I'm having trouble eating or typing. Tonight he worked out he can sit behind me in my chair, which means he doesn't need me to hol him for hours at a time which hurts a lot. He is coming for shorter arm cuddles, but not wanting me to hold him up while he sleeps.

In yet more cat news, Livia took the plunge Wednesday. She's been toying with the idea of staying on top o me after bedtime pets for longer and longer intervals. Today she finally did it! she slept right on top of the human the way Tavy used to before the elder Kitty decline and death. She had the best time. she needed encouragement to get back on after I shifted position the first couple of times, but she'd already learned to step off and then right back on by the third iteration. she liked it so much it took hours for me to get up because every time I stopped moving, she climbed back on for a pet and a nap.

Livia is definitely winning at life.

* Friday: We now know what's wrong with my shoulder. my belief it is the AS colonizing another joint ad not a normal injury proved correct. In part. In the middle of the bad episode the last two months i stared getting what felt like tendinitis, I assumed in response to the whole trying to function with a fucked up shoulder. It looks like a tendon is sort of fucked now. Not normal injury fucked, so much as a year and a half of trying to cope with the weird ass bone and cartilage stuff happening in my shoulder causing slow secondary damage fucked.

This means neither of the likely treatments will work. (One for a normal injury; one for AS join damage).

She's trying to talk Medicare into some physio. We'll see. So this is basically my life now.

* Livia, who has never seen a real mirror because she doesn't go up on the bathroom sink, just had a fight with her reflection in the patio door. I've usually lowered the curtain by now. I don't think she's noticed her night reflection before. When I went over she meeped plaintively at me to let her out to kick mirror cat's butt. They are now having a staring content. That's literally the biggest cats she's seen since she was weened. That strange cat is on the patio where the human does weird things to plants! Clearly that is imperial territory.

In other cat news, yesterday she learned she can still just fit in the little bookshelf for a nap.

* I'm sick again, apparently. Odds are it's not COVID. I'm not showing a fever. I do have a runny nose, headache, sore throat, and a really annoying cough with shortness of breath. I need more time to disambiguate virus vs bacteria, but as scary as the cough was for about two hours after dinner, I suspect it's just one of the things I come down with all the fucking time. Odds are it came via the mail as Squirrel isn't showing signs of it.

We are still waiting for test results, but he's clearly fine. It definitely was not what I have now and was a milder version of whatever I had back in March.

In other news, the Special Girl food came. We now have a whole canister of safe for everyone kibbles and a whole lot of shreds. I expect mailing delays to get worth, so this is a real comfort.

I'm not getting a stimulus deposit until May it looks like, so my dream of a toaster that toasts both sides at once is on hold likely until mid May. I plan to do another extra large Chewey order next month once my regular SSI processes just in case. I know some brands are having shortages and I live in fear of running out of the Livia safe food that all three can agree is delicious.

The gift air purifier has really been helping. I can tell the difference between safe bedroom air and out here. It still startles Livia when I turn it on at night, but it's quiet enough that it doesn't scare her, which is an important consideration. Alas she is scared of the fan, which I've had to use twice in the last week as a force multiplier for the air conditioner. I staid in bed extra long after turning it off so she could come and nap on the bed with the Emperor and I.

I am making progress on getting things put away. I finished sorting the fish stuff and the flats are now stowed properly under their bench. The last phase of this project segment is a pain in the ass. It's the one where I go through the spare parts box and to water tests to see if any motors are salvageable. Ugh.

* Friday my body threw one of it's periodic tantrums, plus, I'd had most of my sleep stolen, as a result, it's not that surprising I needed a ton of extra sleep Saturday, and they had a particularly bad pain day.

Squirrel managed to sort out transportation for himself. The hope is we drop off the car at honest Mechanic for Monday. I'm mostly stranded until it's sorted. No idea what it's going to cost yet, but thanks to a kind donor, I'm in a better condition to negotiate. We'll seewhen we hear back from honest Mechanic.

In other news, all three cats love the new experimental goosh, to the point that instead of Livia eating her required portion is not a chore she's resigned to, but all three of them eagerly await distribution and there are occational altercations as a result. Assuming her health stays good on this one, I'm considering this pretty much ideal. Tavy, who prefers kibbles wants first bite now. It's good for his prostate to eat some wet, so it's a fine secondary benefit.
