* Me watching Pompeii: That's not how it works. That's not how any of this works. the people who made it are at least as confused and flat out wrong as the ones that made Braveheart. It was too much of a mess historically to ignore the problems and take as cheese.

* I am finding The Great Wall visually gorgeous, but incredibly frustrating as whoever picked the subtitle font decided to make the lettering so tiny that I literally cant read it without pressing my face up against the screen. I can make out the capital letters and the 't's', so can generally guess single words like "wait" or attack", but I have to guess all the sentences from context. Why would they do this? Most people are not going to be watching this on a massive, super expensive wall sized widescreen TV. There was no descriptive video option and no option to go fullscreen so no way to recover the Chinese dialog. (I prefer widescreen as a rule, but I also prefer having visible subtitles). I know they know how to do visible captioning, as the English for hearing impaired is in huge, easily visible letters, mostly printed on the black background under the picture. why couldn't they do that with the translated dialog as well? Accessibility is a thing, people. It's 2017.

* TNG Rewatch, Season 6:

- Ship in a Bottle. Moriarty is back and grumpy about them dropping that plot thread for four years. I still have lots of questions about how people can be in multiple locations inside the same holodeck. I do like the using the simulation to steal command codes trick. I've seen it done clumsily in lots of shows since, but it is lovely in it's simplicity here. I do like the ethically quandaries around Moriarity and the Countess' personhood and what to do with them. I also think this is the first time they have had Barkley appear in which it hasn't been about his psychiatric issues. He's just there doing his job, which is kind of nice.

- Aquiel. A Mystery, an unreliable narrator, Klingon social friction, and Geordi's creepy thing where he builds an imaginary relationship with a woman he's never met and acts accordingly, brain sex, and the Star Trek version of The Thing.

* TNG Rewatch, Season 5:

- Ensign Ro. Enter my beloved Bajorans, and oh, did we love Ensign Ro when this was new. If Starfleet respects the religious beliefs of everyone, why do they require Ensign Ro to take off her earing? It's very much like making a Muslim woman who wears the hijab take it off and is the opposite of religious toleration. The Guinan and Ro scenes are so right. This one goes surprisingly deep on being a survivor of terrible things even if it is only one scene. That's the thing that is impressing me this go round: that they do things like show Picard having PTSD and now touching on Ro's conflicted feelings about being a survivor.

- Disaster. Do they not have ultrasounds in the 23rd century? they are once again torturing childfree Picard with children. Everyone gets divided up into groups. People end up with jobs out of their comfort zones which is an interesting character study. I love Worf the medic. Deanna can feel people alive on planets when they are in orbit. She routinely violates the crew's privacy to tell Picard the mood of the crew. Why can't she feel the crew in this episode even enough to tell if any are alive? Why is the baby born clean?

- The Game. Didn't Riker's last girl friend just die a couple of episodes ago? Rijer says to Jordie, "I just brought this thing back from Riza you have got to try." I know what it's a trap, but it's also clearly a masturbation devise. I am not good with flashy lights and had to close my eyes.

- Unification I&II. Vulcan Alzheimer's breaks my heart. Data staring at Picard when he's trying to sleep. Data is not cut out for infiltration based intelligence work. *wince* Spock not getting to say goodbye in person. I love the little Spock and Data conversation.

* My father spent a lot of time in France. He had a lot of friends there. All through my growing up, we'd have random french people visiting. It wasn't just my father's friends, though I have a picture of me a few months old being fed by one of them, but friends of friends and their friends. Someone would come to America on vacation and we'd put them up. (They'd turf my sister and I out of our rooms for the guests). We'd take them around and show them the sights and feed them. Conversation could be a little complicated depending on how fluent various of us were and various of them were. (My Father was completely fluent and idiomatic. My mother spoke enough to hold basic conversations about things like food, scheduling, etc.). My Sister could curse, but not much else. how much French I spoke increased over time and I could converse by High School assuming the vocabulary didn't get too complicated or specialized, though these days I pretty much am down to sweet talking the cats, snippets of 30+ year old slang, and curse words again, since I never use it unless I'm watching a movie and the subtitles are bowdlerized). Despite being turfed out of my room, I loved having them. My father's friends were interesting people and many of them had fascinating lives. It was fun showing them our city. I remember one year a friend we were all particularly fond of came for Christmas with her young son and we showered them with gifts. They'd just escaped from Mexico with little more than the clothes on their backs from the boy's abusive father who had been holding her child and her passport hostage. We wanted her to feel loved and part of the family. I'll never forget her face, her surprise delight that it wasn't a token, that we'd really gone all out so that the two of them would know they were important and that they'd have a good memory to take back home. I remember Jean Pierre, who's English wasn't particular good, but who my Dad and I could talk to and his mischievous sense of humor. I have a picture of him and my father sitting in matching armchairs in our living room looking like brothers, the time he came to live with us for a few months after a bad break up. I remember my Father's friend who was ex-resistance and had been a world traveler, and so m any more. My father's friends were family we only saw once and a while, but they were people we loved. Most of them are dead now, and the few others gradually lost touch.

The year we all went to France, instead of just my father, was a year of bombings. the train we were on got hit in Lyon a few hours after we debarked. A few months after we came home, they bombed a store we had been to. The whole time we were there we could not miss the complicated and often ugly racial tensions, a legacy of the colonial past in north Africa and made worse by subsequent events. It is a hard thing to write about, requiring a delicacy and focus I do not have tonight. As far as I can tell, none of the places hit were where my Father's friends lived. Odds are, if any of his Parisian friends still live they weren't harmed. It doesn't make the events of yesterday any less distressing. Yes, I got sexually harassed at the Jeu d'Pomme and followed that one time in Clermont-Ferrand, but my memories of France are full of kind strangers. I remember the suburban bakery where they treated us like visiting celebrities, delighted to have real Americans in their shop. I remember the people who cut my hair and how kind they were even though they had no English and I had no appropriate vocabulary for the transaction except the word for hair and how much. I remember Domonique making a crepe casserole and taking us around to see things my father had no interest in, her perfect rp pronunciation and incredibly kind eyes. I remember Jean Pierre endlessly going everywhere Interdit as if it were a special invitation just for him, including a crumpling piss ledge in a castle where he could easily be killed, and the two of us climbing that rickety church belltower to my mother's horror, and him making faces to cheer up my little sister who was terribly bored at a formal dinner. I remember the elderly lesbians who cooked us an amazing 13 course dinner because they thought my father charming.

I just... I have no words I can write about this terrible thing that has happened in Paris. It is too real and too personal and too dreadful. So I carry on between bouts of crying, because that's what I do, what my family has always done.

So if you see me not saying much directly about the attacks, this is why.

* The good fan died a few nights ago, and now I'm struggling to sleep in the heat. Even if the right kind of fan were on sale right now, which it's not, I couldn't afford to replace it anyway. I don't have money for fish food, for fuck's sake. It also really freaks me out that my air conditioner on full with a box fan as a force multiplier is not strong enough to chill my room to sleep temperature in November. It's not as scary as the satillite photographs of the Northwest Passage we melted, but it's up there on the list of scary climate change things.

* There have been multiple terrorist attacks in Paris with bombs, guns, and possibly a suicide bomb. At least 120 are dead, but the numbers are not final and many of the attackers are still loose so there may be more coordinated attacks.

* I'm about halfway through the GoT Season three rewatch, and am now confirmed in my opinion that this is the season when the butterfly effect of all the D&D arbitrary changes really start damaging plot and character coherence. I think it's like slow boiling a lobster, the temperature gradually rising. It's all faultlines in season three even though the whole thing won't fall apart completely until the start of season five. I don't know how for I'll go with the rewatch. I am planning to do Season four, but I don't think I can stomach five, given how little I wanted to be watching that offensive nonsense when it was new. I'm not convinced I will be able to tolerate six when it comes out. It's heart breaking. The cast is so good and they are trying so hard, but the scripts make noticeably less sense one to the next.

* I am hearing lots of police and people on the right generally insist that the shooting of a single police officer is proof that the Black Lives Matter is illegitimate and a hate group and ought to be dismantled immediately, but I do not seem those same, police, politicians and pundits calling for the police to be dismantled immediately on the grounds that they are illegitimate and a hate group despite them having murdered more than four hundred people so far this year including in many cases where there is ample evidence that people were unarmed and innocent of any crime. you can't have it both ways. If one police shooting is enough to require a large group of people to lose their first amendment rights to protest police murders, regardless of any guilt or condoning of that shooting, shouldn't the murder a single unarmed innocent person by the police demand the exact same action to occur to every police officer, murderer or not? here's a radical idea, instead of a sweeping loss of civil rights for innocent civilians, why not just start arresting ALL the known murders and aggressively prosecuting them instead of the current system of letting the ones in blue get a free pass and stop arbitrarily stealing the basic right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness from millions of people based on racial animus.

* This. This. This. This was pretty much how I ended up teaching, though Greene came out when I was already in the field. It just seemed kinder and more effective to respond to the causes instead of fixating on the behavior and to involve the child having problems in coming up with strategies. It made more sense to me to approach a kid quietly and ask if everything was alright and help the kid work out how to sort out whatever it was than to come in hard and heavy with consequences right off. If I had to hand out consequences I'd failed. My job was to see that something was wrong before it escalated. My job was to help their brains develop and give them tools they could use long term. Yes, some kids are jerks, but most of the ones chronically in trouble in other people's rooms had real problems. They had limited English, or learning disabilities, or problems at home, or were victims of abuse. They were frustrated or picked on or struggling with brain learning issues, or PTSD, or Depression and the like. They needed one kind of help or another. My goal every day was to get as many of them as possible what help it was in my power to give to get them through that day without humiliation or cruelty, and to long term make things just a little bit better for them. We couldn't save all of them, but damned if we didn't try and I got to see my share of miracles: incremental work by lots of caring teachers trying to help them learn strategies and skills, help them heal, help them reconnect with the people around. the super strict micro-managing behavior programs never worked. The kids just got angrier and angrier. What worked out in the field was teachers and aids individually taking time and effort to really help. In my room, all those kids with the behavioral labels got to start fresh every single day. In my room, they got a fair shake because I kept an eye out for instigators and scapegoating. I'd land hard on a kid I caught goading or tormenting some poor kid with impulse control issues, and I'd make damned sure his or her other teachers knew what they were doing, bullying another kid into exploding for sport. I always did my best to find the root cause instead of taking the easy victim. It's impossible to always be fair and just, but oh did I try. the teachers around me whom I respected tried. We could see the difference in the kids. I'm glad there is an official framework for it, a book to be studied, because it was hard work deriving this system ourselves in the midst of it. You go, Greene!

* Hannibal is no go for me. Oh, I love the characters and the aesthetic, but Season two pretty much hits all my triggers. I pushed through to some point in episode 4, but it clearly wasn't going to let up any time soon. The thing with me and triggers is the ones that are left are complicated. I short hand it to gas lighting, which is a prominent part, but there is a whole cluster of connected things. The more of those things present, the harder it is for me to deal. I can guess which things are in the ballpark generally, but some things don't trigger that on paper should and there is always guess work involved. Shudder Island was fine; Changeling was impossible, for example. Season two Hannibal is like a bingo card for my triggers. I know a bunch of you really wanted me to watch it, but I'm done.

* The Walking Dead: I stand by my belief that Carol is the scariest, most dangerous group member. I like them addressing PTSD. This is exactly the right time for it. I am hoping this means they will finally flesh Sasha out. Daryl is the horse. Domesticate him and he dies. I am glad Michonne has the sword in reach and not in the armory. Even excluding the inevitable Walker break through or human attack, they have old people in Alexandria. What if someone has a heart attack and dies in the night, etc.. I've always been of the lock yourself in with a weapon at night school of thought. Disarming means they are fucked if someone has an aneurism or chokes to death eating dinner.

* I expect that the transition from Craig Ferguson's Late Late Show to the new host is going to be Jack Parr leaving the tonight dhow rough or worse. Craig's audience is not your standard Late Night Celebrity chat audience. The fact that I've been watching it is a hint at that, given my lack of interest in other shows of it's type. It's sort of a Cult Classic and that kind of magic is not really replicable. I can only hope the new gentleman is ready for the inevitable vitriol that is about to pour down on his head. I wish him luck. I'll likely give his show a try, but odds are, I'll be turning off after Colbert within a week, and I expect a lot of people will not even try to like him or give him a fair shot. He seems charming and I hope he blows my expectations out of the water, but I'm not holding my breath.

* As the ebay money hadn't transferred yet, Squirrel lent me twenty so I might mail out the ebays that were paid up. I was good and instead of blowing the other half on lung meds, I bought more pate goosh for Hector. We have some shreds yet, but he stopped being able to eat those end of October and we had a about a day's worth of the stuff he can eat still. All this driving with the car with the broken power steering has left me in an astonishing amount of pain. (Yesterday: foraging, bureaucracy, Doctor, Library. Today: Book drop, post office, discount grocery, our old apartment to try to track mail gone astray). If I had my twenty years ago body, I'd likely be selling it to raise money to get my car back. I used to sell my blood when I was teaching until I became too sick. I wonder if that place is still there and if they pay enough to make the cost of the gas worth it.

I scared up some titles, but I thought it would be better to open to the floor, as I'm much better at middle Grades and YA. Feminist titles are preferred (and boys having feelings too counts as well as strong girl protagonists), and Realistic lit is better for this reader's tastes, but don't let that stop you.

* Yesterday was for doing another ebay batch. Today was the doctor, the library, and another tarot reading for the fund raiser.

It was at this point, I realized it's time to start building a new deck. *facepalm* It makes sense: One deck for what passed for childhood. One deck for youth. One deck for my prime. Now a deck for my fading.

After I finished, I threw a reading for myself, for the first time in about half a decade. It was by far the darkest reading I've ever done for anybody, all sharp edges and drawn blood, mostly swords and pentacles. I liked it better when it was always some combination of The Hanged Man, The Fool, Death, and the Lightening Struck Tower, but those days are gone and the circle closes. Time to get out the knives and start stripping down to survive the way they do to a racing bike. Coyote has always been easier than the Wolf, for all the prat falls and self mockery and lack of dignity, but it is now the Season of the Wolf for me, all tooth and claw and hunger. I suppose I knew it was coming. My dream map shifts again.

* I'm finally reaching the other side on my ruined voice, I think. There's all sorts of things I still can't sing, but I'm finding a coherent singing voice at least.

* Most people are aware of the racism inherent in Othello and Merchant of Venice, but people generally forget how racist the Tempest is. Modern productions generally lampshade the racism, cutting key lines and making casting and costuming choices intended to deemphasize how deeply problematic it is. The Tempest ha never been a favorite of mine. I've read it and seen several productions, mostly when I was in school, but so not my favorite, despite their being a number of truly lovely passages. (Still one of the most beautiful passages from Shakespeare:

"Full fathom five thy Father lies,
Of his bones are Corrall made:
Those are pearles that were his eies,
Nothing of him that doth fade,
But doth suffer a Sea-change
Into something rich & strange
Sea-Nymphs hourly ring his knell.
Harke now I heare them, ding-dong, bell.")

Anyway, I tend to avoid the Tempest itself, as I generally do with Othello and the Merchant of Venice, now that I'm not obliged to watch, read, or teach it. I was persuaded to watch the Helen Miran version recently, in part because of the quality of the cast. I admit, I was fascinated by the way changing Prospero to Prospera changed all sorts of dynamics in the film, but this wasn't the most interesting choice they made. They decided to engage with the racial implications of the text instead of hiding them. It was a bold choice. I'm not convinced it was entirely successful, but I think if I were to have to teach the Tempest, this is the version I'd likely choose to show at the end, because I think this could be the basis of a really interesting discussion about race, gender, and power in Shakespeare. It would get messy, no doubt, but I saw this a month or so ago and I still wish I could sit in a large group of people who've seen it and have a really good debate.
