I know one of the problems they have with The Rose Parade is that some of the high school bands, in particular, have a hard time with the length of the parade route and by the end are apparently really worn out (they do also have vans that follow along and can pick up marchers who are really having a problem.) The PCC band (which is one of about 4 bands which are guaranteed a spot every year - the others being the Marine Corps, LAUSD All-City Band, and the Salvation Army) does special training where they march around and through campus several times playing as we get closer to the parade to build up stamina (it's a little surreal to be eating lunch between classes and suddenly have a marching band go by playing).
Though now I'm kind of wanting to look up what all the distinctions on the fancy division were, because there were clearly several different categories and I couldn't quite tell what all the rules were. For the brigades I just kept thinking that the brigade name would have something to do with the theme of the performance, but other than the jokers, it didn't.
