* Tonight's social went really well, but everything else was terrible including constant rebooting undoing my work, having to strip my bed down to the mattress, wash everything again a day after washing everything only without help and start over, injury, etc.. I do not want to talk about it in detail and because of the updates still completely fucking my computer, I only managed to post about a third of the news I intended to. My apologies for sucking, but the whole less than an hour between reboots, things I need helpfully freezing situation it is hard to accomplish anything.

* Skate America:
Men: Boyong Jin man lots of small mistakes on the jump combinations, but didn't fall. Also, there were some odd transitions, particularly with foot work, though I can't tell if that's the choreography or him being slightly off. Poor Daniel Samohin fell on both jumps he attempted, the second so badly he couldn't continue. I love Yan Han's style, footwork, and choreography, but the skate was a mess with lots of falls. The commentators thought this might be due to the sudden schedule change caused by the injury. In any case, it's heartbreaking. Sergei Voronov is perfectly pleasant to watch, but not spectacular in a year when you have to be spectacular. One fall, but he really came together after. Adam Rippon is one of the ones who would have done really well in the pre-Pleshenko era, but he fell on his one quad. The rest was lovely, but he really hasn't a prayer against the top guys at the Olympics. His skating is beautiful and expressive, his spins top notch, and he really does everything gracefully. Nathan Chen is much more graceful this year than last, and his jumps are the best in the business when he's on. He still was impressive even with all the mistakes, but this was not his best work. Let us hope he does better in Korea. The results seemed about right given how people were skating. I'm so happy for Sergei getting his bronze and getting to advance to the final. He's 30, up against kids with ridiculous jumps and he managed to at least do this.

Women (Short): I do enjoy Li Xiangning's skating in general and spins in particular. Her jumps were a touch dicey, but is was enjoyable. Bradie Tennell, I don't think I've seen before. She jumps extremely well, but I was not impressed with her spins, and her choreography can best be described as innocuous. She got some potential but she's not even close to ready for Olympics, I fear. Polina Tsurskya is one I root for. She does such good work technically normally, but she had an ugly fall and I'm not sure this choreography is doing her favors. It is a shame, as the spins were lovely and the jumps that worked were excellent. Alena Leonova connects to the audience really well and the choreography was fun. Serafima Sakhanovich did a solid skate that scored well, but is seemed rough around the edges and not particularly engaging to me. So not my taste, but fine, basically. Kaori Sakamoto was much more to my taste, though she also struck me as a bit rough around the edges, but her jump are excellent and it looks solvable. Nicole Rajičová had perfectly decent skate that is rough around the edges, only with wild and rather unfortunate choreography, and not enough technical difficulty to compete with the top women. Karen Chen is my favorite of the current American skaters, very total package when she's on. There were some problems today alas: an under rotation, a wince making hard fall, some odd footwork on one of the passes; but her spins are fast, tight, and complex; she is graceful and precise; and I really do think this routine suits her. This was not a good skate, but all the paces are their for future events. Ashley Wagner really does know how to connect with a crowd, but she too was struggling with her jumps, though not as badly. Gabrielle Daleman has been ill, so I was a bit worried going in. Carmen is very her. Her second jumping pass went a bit awry, but it was a otherwise a good skate. Satoko Miyahara also had some trouble with the first jumping pass, and I'm not feeling her choreography, but her spin game was on point and the other jumping passes were excellent. Pretty damned good coming back from that many injuries.

Long: Polina Tsurskya's program suits her, I think, even if some of the footwork is odd. Watching her, she's my third pick for the Russian team, even if she is a little rough here and there. I think Karen Chen may have undermined her self by repeatedly changing her program, and this was painful to watch even though I loved how she skated it last year. I know she can skate better than this. There were some moments of brilliance in there and she really does have Olympic potential if she can get it together by Nationals. I feel like Bradie Tennell's routine suits her, but it's basically more of the same from the short program: excellent jumps, but everything else very juniors. She needed an extra year to mature as far as spins, footwork, and choreography, I suspect. She has a ton of potential, and I'll understand completely if she makes the Olympic team. It's just don't think she can compete with the top Russians yet. Serafima Sakhanovich had very good jumps, but awkward choreography and her spins were nothing to write home about. she has a lot of potential, but I am concerned that Pleshenko won't focus on bringing the rest of her game up to where her jumps are as he was very similar when he was competing. Kaori Sakamoto was basically the same as far as strengths and weaknesses, but though she's another one on my co-ed list of people who should really use ballet lessons, she made a serious effort to convey something specific artistically and connect to the crowd. She has a lot of potential even if she isn't where one would wish her to be right now as far as all around skating. Gabrielle Daleman started strong, but there were problems in the second half. Satoko Miyahara's free program was more to my taste than her short, and legitimately good all around. I think this was the best of the free programs tonight. Apparently the judges agreed. :)
