* I am still sleep shifted into the least useful possible sleep cycle, hence my odd availability. I'm not even trying to fight it right now, as I'm having an out patient procedure Friday early morning that involves cutting open my foot, and at least this way, I'll likely be awake at the appropriate time without struggle. How ambulatory I'll be after and how soon depends on how deep they are forced to explore, so I can make zero guarantees about availability times until likely next week.

* This contains massive Black Sails finale spoilers. It is also hilarious:

* On paper the Almighty Johnsons sounds up my alley. Norse Gods running around New Zealand has a lot of potential as an idea, but the execution? Not so much. It's so clearly written by and for straight men and is incredibly blokey. It literally features a montage of straight people fucking early in the first episode, the plot centers on a war between the sexes and a man's quest to find a woman and fuck her. Charming. Despite including about as much male nudity as female nudity, the women clothed or otherwise are mostly shot for straight male amusement while most of the male nudity is for humor. None of the five male leads is appealing or likeable as characters, though Olaf is at least vaguely amusing. I'm three episodes in and honestly not sure what the fuss is about and I'm having a hard time with the women are either villains or there to be treated like shit by the men ethos. The library bought these things because I asked to see them so I feel like I ought to soldier on. (I'd feel worse about them ordering the series, except there are eleven people in line for them already, so clearly a demand existed). The man character is boring, annoying, weak minded, etc.. Anders makes me want to stab him, being rapey and horrible. Mike rubs me the wrong way. Which leaves annoying, but vaguely amusing Olaf, and hod who so far is the least aweful? I guess. It's not much of an endorsement when one is saying things like "doesn't use the magical equivalent of roofies and hasn't fucked anyone too drunk to consent that we've seen" are about all one can think of praiseworthy to say. When the best one can say about a show is three out of five male leads haven't raped anyone after three episodes... Wait, is that even true? Mike has been lying to his wife their whole relationship about who he literally is. So two out of five possibly understand consent? Maybe? Except I'm doubting Olaf tells partner he's a nonagenarian, which I'm guessing they might object to, and hod isn't exactly coming clean on his T except that one time, so... It gets grosser the more one thinks about it really.

* I just saw another pundit out stigmatizing folks on psyche meds which is cruel, inaccurate, and dangerous, because way more people die or get way sicker than they otherwise would be because of the stigma discouraging them from seeking help. The brain is an organ. Needing to take meds to function normally shouldn't be stigmatized whether that med is insulin, welbutrin, prozac, or the celebrex that let's me walk around my apartment most days instead of being pretty much a wheelchair user which is the alternative given the level of spinal damage I have.

When it comes to medication for minors, I am a moderate because I was a teacher. Let me explain what that means. 1. Medications are mostly tested on adult white cis men. This is a huge fucking problem, because bodies vary wildly. If you do all your testing on a narrow, homogeneous population you do not get an accurate picture of what that drug will do at that dosage when released into the wild. Adult cis white men are not the default body. There have been huge problems with overdoses caused by the average woman or child being smaller than the average adult man. There have been issues caused by hormones, body fat, and structural differences interacting with medications differently. There have been problems because the developing brains and bodies of adolescents interact with meds differently, and overdoses caused because they are basically guessing at what the dose of something ought to be for a nine year old girl based on dosage for a forty year old man. People are horribly injured, sometimes permanently, and people die. There is pretty much no testing on what medications I in trans bodies, which means often deadly surprises for trans folk and doctors innocently following dosage directions that have zero data on what they will do to our bodies. I have a list of meds issues related to my transness that are as we speak word of mouthing between GPs who treat trans people because there is nothing in the text books they studied in college about a potentially deadly thing that happened to me and some other trans people in my region that likely happens to a significant percentage of us all over the world but isn't in any of the literature. The reason we know it's an issue is because trans folk do a lot of medical word of mouth. If that doesn't scare you it should. I think that the FDA should not clear any drug for use in the general population without a good sample size of both men and women with diverse racial and body types. No drug should be given to children or teens without having been tested and normed on a good sample size of people of more than one gender and a variety of body types in that age range. So that's a real problem and it needs to have changed like decades ago and there is no sign of it changing now.

2. One of the standard "educational reforms" mostly intended to save money is to cut out recess, phys ed., art, and music classes. This is done supposedly to make more time for "the basics." The problem is that if you cut those things you dramatically decrease the effectiveness of the academic class time. No really. I mean, yes, it's anecdotally obvious if you spend any time at all teaching K-12, particularly the 1-8 range, but there are lots of scientific studies backing up what any teacher can tell you. It turns out that retention is dramatically increased if you go out and do something physical after studying. Going out and running around or shooting hoops or whatever at regular intervals not only burns off energy and is healthier for your body, but it gives your brain important time to process whatever it is you just learned. It turns out that varying activity generally is good for you, and music and art are particularly helpful to certain types of learners. There are good, sound brain sience reasons that private schools leave in all the enrichment activities rather than cutting them for academics: that time spent oing other things enhances student learning and people who can afford to buy the best education for their children side with science over sentiment. Education reformers cut things we know are objectively good for the students because of unconscious classism: they don't want the children of the poor to ever have nice things. They consider what turns out to be fairly essential to the children's ability to focus in class and retain what they learned as frivolous. These are often the same people wanting to starve children to punish them for bad grades when we know that objectively, hungry children have a hard time focusing on tasks or retaining knowledge and that hungry children are more likely to act out in class. Feeding them three nutritious meals a day would be a much better way to improve student learning than starving them, but rich people love punishing poverty instead of giving people a ladder to climb out of it, so that's how policy is set.

What does this have to do with meds? In schools where I was allowed to hand a child a pass and send zim out to do a lap or two around the school in exchange for the child then sitting down and working hard the rest of the period, I had a lot more compliance from kids who really did want to work, but couldn't. It was much more effective and humane than a discipline referral. Would more recess and options to let kids run around a little more magically remove the need for meds? Hell no. I've seen kids with real dangerous depression. I've seen kids with ADHD who absolutely needed their meds to have a prayer of accomplishing anything that day. I've seen kids with less common issues who needed one type of medication or another. I absolutely think that there are children who need pharmaceutical help of one sort or another. That help was generally most effective when mixed with other sorts of help and support. Sometimes that help would be from a psychiatric professional, or a special ed teacher, or an occupational therapist, because often serious need for meds also comes with a need for coping strategies or other issues needing addressing. In pretty much all cases the children do better with a flexible and compassionate classroom teacher interested in partnering with the kid to find things that will help them deal with right now and getting through today productively and with a minimum of embarrassment.

So call me a moderate. Stigmatizing these children as lazy or violent or just needing to pull up their pants and get to work is the opposite of helping. It is in fact a lie that really can hurt people. I do favour a more global approach to the well being of each child. It shouldn't just be medicate them and forget them. It should be the right dose, combined with a variety of non-pharmaceutical help, tailored for what is best for the child and the room full of children as a whole. When I walked into that room every morning, my goal was for every one of the people under my care to have a pleasant and productive day. That went the same for the kid on insulin as it went for the kid on Ritalin or prozac or the kid who's english reading skills were still developing or the kid who was scared because ze didn't know where ze was going to be sleeping tonight. I couldn't fix all the problems, but I could sure try to make sure everyone felt safe in my room and had the best chance I could give them of learning something today whatever the hell else was going on in their lives.

So fuck you, Bill Maher!

* Re: Ashley Madison. I don't have any skin in this game. I have never cheated, not have I been cheated on, though I have been in a lot of relationships with negotiated openness of one type or another. I am a believer in ethical polyamory, not cheating. In a Modern American context, there are very few circumstances that excuse it. We no longer have arranged marriages. no fault divorce is the law of the land. People whom can not split up for reasons such as finances, children, serious medical issues, etc. can use their damned words and work out an open marriage arrangement like sensible adults. I do think that in times, countries, and circumstances that are coercive, where people really don't have options, cheating, while not ideal is acceptable. I think those conditions apply rarely in this country now. It is completely unacceptable to subject a partner to risk without consent, with the obvious exception of a situation where a person is being coerced to stay and they that isn't a partner, that is a rapist. Otherwise, leave or use your words. Like a grown up.

That said, I am also a huge fan of privacy. Showing Jennifer Lawrence's genitals to people without her consent is not okay. Showing anyone's genitals to people without their consent is never okay regardless of gender and celebrity status. Warrantless collection of email by governments is not okay. Warrantless wiretaps are not okay. Publishing someones name and address and urging people to kill them because you don't like what she said about gaming on the Internet or what he does for a living or who they sleep with is not okay. And on and on.

Publishing the names and financials etc. of people registered on Ashley Madison is not okay. Privacy trumps the fact that cheating is a shitty thing to do. Publishing someone's personal details and fucking up their whole family's lives is way shittier, especial as the financials mean you are stealing not just from the cheater but that person's spouse and children if any. You are punishing the whole family for something that is not illegal and is incredibly common. What you are doing is way shittier than whatever that cheating spouse did, it truly is.

* Personal Clarification: while it is never okay to out trans people, I am as out as I can manage. In all my social media I am clearly labelled non-binary trans. Therefore, it is okay to point someone to me on social media as a non-binary trans person. Similarly, I am completely out RL and walk around wearing buttons to that effect all winter long. (I would wear them in summer, but they do not stick well to my messenger bag). My pronouns are ze, zir, zim. (If I owned buttons with my pronouns on them, I'd wear those too.) I don't mind you correcting pronouns when I'm not around. I generally don't bother with the pronoun thing with service workers as it's frankly exhausting to everyone involved, but otherwise, have at. Again, this is just me. I have next to nothing to lose. I'm federally disabled and so can't get fired for transness. I live in one of the safest places a trans person can live, and what danger there is I willingly accept. Most people are not in my position so best to be checking individually with your trans friends as to their preferences.

There is one exception to my open door policy: I prefer people not cross the streams on my RL and online persona. I prefer that random internet people not be given my last name or information about my specific address, etc.. I like to decide which identifying details I give out. This is because I have been tracked that way before, and while it turned out all right, there is a chance it might not next time. Some of you know me rl and on the Internet. A handful of you who I've known a long time on the Internet have my personal details. I like to be the gatekeeper of who has my legal name and physical address. Beyond that? Again, have at it. I live a very transparent sort of life.

Just keep in mind that the the outness/safety balance is one every single LGBTQIA person has to decide for themselves and robbing people of safety (Except in the case of rabidly anti-gay gay public figures, where it becomes a community safety issue) is never okay. Never out private people. Never out public figures who are not posing a clear and present danger to the rights and safety of the rest of us.

It is clever, well acted, and I'm pretty sure it's the most brutal thing about show business I've ever seen made. It was not my thing, and I could barely drag myself through it. So not for owls. * Mitch McConnell wants to remind you that it is necessary to punish poor and middle class college students with a life time of debt for trying to better their lot so as to preserve the lowest tax rate for the richest Americans to reward them for choosing to be born wealthy, which was why he chose to filibuster the bill to lower interest rates on students loans so the government would stop making a profit. After all those people could have chosen to be born to parents who could afford to pay for college out right.

* I see Republicans are claiming that Republicans forcing the sequester because they like to pretend the imaginary debt crisis is real is somehow the President's fault. They are also claiming that cutting back military spending even a little is unprecedented even though we always have dramatically cut back military spending after every single previous war except Iraq II. Why let reality get in the way of rhetoric, after all? I see they are demanding we starve military families by taking away their EBT/SNAP food stamps so as to use that money to keep us on a War footing so they can randomly invade more countries as they've been demanding for well over a decade. They insist that starving the children of active duty soldiers is "supporting the troops" while feeding their children is bad for America. Riiiiight.

I don' follow Philadelphia politics closely since I don't live there any more, but whenever I see Mayor Nutter he is doing something to make the world a better place. I teared up a little reading this article. The Philadelphia of my teens was one where cops hunted gay men for sport. The police are still refusing to investigate the case of a trans woman who accepted a ride home from police, but they murdered and dumped her on a street corner. I'm used to Philly being enemy territory. It is a huge fucking deal that they are taking major steps to make government jobs fairer and safer. This looks like the sort of progress I didn't expect to see in my lifetime.

Now if they'll start investigating murders and prosecuting murderers, I'll be happy.

* Levar Burton explains the Great Gatsby Reading Rainbow style:

Embed: )

* Re Gatsby. I’ve read the book a bunch of times. When Squirrel and I first saw the trailer in a theater, he asked me after what the book was about. I struggled to explain it. This is not a matter of forgetting, but a matter of having a hard time putting it in to words. I could talk about themes, but how do you explain in a couple sentences why it’s still a big deal in American Literature? The plot isn’t the point, and a summary won’t convince someone it’s worth reading. I’m not convinced a discussion of themes means anything to someone who hasn’t read it. I think this difficulty in putting it into words is why Colbert’s half hour of Gatsby coverage was so good and clever. It manages to talk about it’s importance while acknowledging just how challenging the book I despite it’s length and maybe because of it’s fairly simple plot. I think everyone who’s read it in high school had a similar struggle at some point when faced with class discussions and test questions.
