The Israeli press noticed and is making enough of a stink that they have fired Bryan Fischer, the Director of Issues Analysis, for anti-Semitic hate speech despite the fact that they are an anti-Semitic hate group in hopes it will calm the furor. The Republican National Committee knows full well what sort of people they are dealing with and don't care that they are doing something incredibly offensive. After all, in Republican mainstream political circles there is nothing shameful about believing that Jews should be bared from practicing their religion in the United states, for example.

* Sorrow's Knot was so good I had trouble putting it down to do things I needed to do.

* I have started both House of Cards and Black Sails. I am mesmerized by both in entirely different ways. It is hard to drag my eyes away to do necessary things. House of Cards is everything rm promised it would be, hitting so many of my sweet spots, it's like it was made for me. I literally spent an hour today contemplating what it means to love someone "like a shark loves blood:" the sexual voraciousness, but also it is the blood that leads the shark to dinner.... The dialog fills me with wicked delight. The relationship between sex, power, money, government, and media is so, so right and so electric. Black Sails... not nearly as heady, but also about politics, money, sex, and power, plus literal pirates instead of metaphorical ones. Thanks to rm and il_volpe for the reccies. Thanks to the library for giving me delicious food for my head.

* I made it through the first season of Orange is the New Black, despite it being triggery towards the end. No, it wasn't them reinforcing Pensyltucky's lies to herself, though you might guess that. It was a bunch of other things far too complex to explain. I really did love the variety of characters and plots on display. It was such a big deal for me when Sophia got her meds back. I love that Naya, one of the few pear shaped women in media, gets the romance and sex plot. Lea DeLaria is a treasure. Red is beautifully designed and acted. I am really fond of the track star lady, the little one with the big hair, Alex, Claudette, and on and on. I want to know Suzanne's story, and it creeps me out that people who claim to be fans of the show and that character use her slur name instead of her real one. The little addict was heart breaking.... Seriously, it's just Piper and her fiance and the associated tedium and the whole randomly being triggering for me thing that is the problem. I've been promised that season two is lighter on the tedious bits, so when the library gets it, odds are I'll keep on with it.

* I got so excited when I heard they were doing a female Ghostbusters, because that is a brilliant idea. Unfortunately I don't care for either Kristen Wiig or Melissa McCarthy's comedy. They are on the same list with Seth Rogan, James DeFranco, Adam Sandaler, etc., where I don't go to their movies since it's like fingernails on a black board for me. I wish I did like them. I know everyone else does, and Melissa McCarthy seemed very likeable as a guest on Craig Ferguson. I like both Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones well enough, but odds are I won't see the movie in the theater, because of the Wiig/McCarthy not being my cup of tea thing. Odds are, I'll give it a try when it reaches TV and odds are I will find Kristen Wiig frustrating and inexplicable and give up ten minutes in. This is sad for me, because I really want to see a female cast reboot of Ghostbusters that fixes the problems I have with the original franchise as an adult.

The thing is, that _that's okay_. I don't expect to be the intended audience for most things, and I am okay with not everything being about me. After all, I am someone who has had in the course of 45 years of life only two commercials ever that seemed designed for me, and am still startled on the rare occasion that a movie caters to my gaze. I can count characters I identify with even halfway on the fingers of one hand. I am actually really happy for all the people the Ghostbusters reboot will cater to. Fuck the douchebags hating on it because having women as main characters "ruins" an imperfect piece of art that was very much a product of its time and is better in memory than it is to watch decades later. Yes, there were cool things in the original. Yes, there were some iconic lines. The thing is, there was a lot of problematic stuff in there (which I've written about before), and for those of us who saw it when it was new? We where a lot younger then. Not everything we love as children and teens is as good as we think it is.

I hope this movie is brilliant, and I hope it makes people even happier than the original did back in the day. I hope all the internet assholery doesn't ruin it for people. I hope the script is so good that I can enjoy it with everybody else, even though it doesn't have to.

We had Spanish and Ukrainian interpreters, but none for the indigenous languages. It was the same with the organizations that helped immigrants. The numbers were going up every year and we were so worried for them. I was doing this round about the turn of this century. I've a feeling out reach hasn't caught up with demand.

* I already did my personal Paula Deen post, but there's something I'm seeing that needs addressing. People are saying we should give her a pass because of her age. I don't think so. She's 60. That means the Civil Rights movement was happening the entire time she was old enough to speak in sentences. Sure she was raised in an environment of pervasive racism, and that can run deep. But you know what? She was an adult woman the entire time I've been alive. She has had more than enough time to reassess the crap she was fed as a child and to educate herself about the issues. I'm not giving her a pass because she chose to stay ignorant on that scale. Everyone makes mistakes at some point in their lives and we still live in a system chock full of biases and the reinforcement of stereotypes. I can see giving her a pass for the first, say 18 years, but she's had more than 40 since then to grasp that slavery was bad and there are words decent people choose never to use. This leads me to believe that she chose on purpose to learn nothing and to expend no empathy at all. I have zero sympathy for willful ignorance as an excuse for doing other people harm.

* I break my left pinky toe a lot. It's fragile from being broken so often. (That thing about breaks being stronger that they told us in elementary school science? A myth). I've snapped it in half twice, the second time in an S-shape twisted break. I've had more hairline fractures than I can count. Doctor's don't treat hairlines on toe, but I've broken that toe so often, I am way too familiar with the sensations involved with breaks. Today, I lost four hours of sleep to what I strongly suspect is a hairline fracture on my pinkie toe: the right one. This is what passes for a plot twist in my life these days.

This is a fundamental question of human rights.

* "A tragedy:" http://www.sparkindarkness.com/2013/03/a-tregedy.html

I have been haunted by this since I heard about it. I needed a little time to put my words together.

To me this is a fundamental case of justice deferred being justice denied. Men like D. L. Hughley say we haven't earned our civil rights because not enough of us have been beaten, not enough of us have died for us to deserve to be treated as full citizens. When I see someone argue this, I wonder how many of our dead bodies count as "enough?" Why don't a thousand plus years of mutilation and murder count? Crucially why don't the people suffering right now count. I suspect that no amount of death and suffering is "enough."

Right now, my people are suffering because they are denied their rights as citizens. Right now, people are losing their houses and apartments and a lot of their possessions when their partner dies because we are denied rights of inheritance and divorce. Right now people are being denied visitation rights to their children. Right now people are literally dieing alone in hospitals, because the hospital doesn't consider the people we've been with for decades as family. Right now, couples are separated because INS doesn't consider them married. Right now two men are dead who didn't have to be because neither of their countries considered them married.

People are literally dieing waiting for our rights to come, but people keep telling us to "be patient." Fuck patience. People are literally dieing while waiting to be declared fully human. Fuck waiting. We need our rights right now. Enough people have died waiting.

I really needed some new fun stuff to read that I don't have to think so much about and I think it says a lot about how far we still have to go as far as fictional representation. It should be easy to make a list of books in various genes where the gay people are main characters and survive until the end. The fact that it still isn't here in the 21st century makes me terribly sad. The fact that I have a bunch of new authors to try makes me happy, so thank you all who helped.

* Today was the usual landlord visit drama. I lured them in for treats, but LM left after eating and I had to catch her and corral her with the others. They hate being locked in. hector howled for something like four hours before I thought of the back up cat nip I had in the treat drawer. Phones rang. It was too hot with all those warm bodies in my tiny well insulated bedroom. I had to open the window, so I could hear all the banging and high pitched beeping associated with detector testing. They found the beeping and banging terrifying. Once it was over and they were free I finally got real sleep. They were clingy and understandably upset, so we had goosh in the evening.

The mesting patterns have changed since August, so I've adjusted some things to better accommodate cat napping. LM is the main beneficiary, as I moved the cat grass into her favorite mest since Hector wasn't sleeping on it any more. I love seeing her brindled back as she naps in her special shelf bed full of shredded paper and paper grass. She finally has a real place of her own for napping of an evening with the group. (To be clear, she puts the mesting material around the edges so it surrounds her all snug like and can serve as a pillow. She likes an open center like most cats. Mammal+nest=mest). She keeps improving socially. She even spent time on my bed with me and the rest of the clowder, though with all the howling and disturbance, the girls ended up under the bed where it was quieter. It's exciting to see her integrating better socially and making an effort to get along.

Today was surprisingly productive despite the tired and my play date. I managed some small reorganization around the putting stuff away after landlord visit, did some housework, changed a tank, and did two more steps on the tea project. The next step will be a while as it requires me to finish sampling and sorting the small packets. The important thing is, I am feeling less cramped. There is stil more organizing to do and a number of other projects, but I'm calling it a win.

* Rand Paul is claiming that being in favor of Medicare, Medicaid and other forms of all access health care is exactly the same as being pro-slavery. O.o

Can we tie him down and make him watch Amistad, the section of the big PBS civil war documentary with the photographs of real slaves and the horrible damage the beating did to their bodies, and Roots Clockwork Orange style? Because last I checked doctors are very well played and no one is whipping them, maiming them, raping them, killing them, and preventing them from having freedom of movement, choice of work, access to education, reproductive choices (unless they are women which is a whole other problem and nothing to do with the liberal positions he's claiming constitute imposing slavery). It seems to me that a privileged white doctor who can quit at any time is nothing at all like a slave and maybe someone needs to make Rand Paul understand that devaluing the horror that is slavery by likening it to being incredibly rich and privileged is seriously fucked up.

You sir, are not a slave. Compensating doctors for saving lives does not constitute slavery. Fuck you, Rand Paul.

* I see Glen Beck has come out against skin cancer awareness on the grounds that he personally doesn't want to bone Megan McCain and therefore everything she says must be wrong. After all, it is a popular conservative idea that any policy or idea put forward by a woman should not be based on it's merit but on the male conservatives attraction to the woman. I've been talking about it for a while, but this seems particularly egregious. After all, he's come out in favour of people getting skin cancer based entirely on his lack of boner. That's fucked up. Talk about thinking with the little head instead of the big one.

I'm also suspecting that Mr. Beck needs to get his eyes checked.

Yes, I'd have preferred black or blue, but brown is acceptable. When handing over the cash, I discovered an unaccounted for twenty, which solved the financial crisis the glasses caused. I've just enough money left for cat food and probably meds. It's be better if there was more money for the inevitable emergencies, but my glasses are staying on my face as I type without a daily jury rig to hold them mostly on, and I can focus my eyes to read without a head ache.

Of course between my cough, Hector's ongoing drama, the whole having to drive to the Optometrist, the bank, and the Pharmacy mid sleep cycle, I'm still ridiculously short on sleep.

* Speaking of reading, I liked Huff's third Valour book rather more than the first two for no particular reason i can put my finger on. All i know is that even though I figured out too many things very early, I had a wonderful time getting there anyway. I'm also mostly through Tamora Pierce's Bloodhound, and while I'm a bit conflicted by the handling of transgender folk, I'm mostly okay with it, as the issues are with the character's responses as opposed to structural (this is me glaring at Lois Bujold for her handling of trans men).

* There will be no mocking of anyone in this journal about porn stash ownership. I'm betting the only non-asexual or hyposexual adult on this journal who doesn't own a little porn, and that's only because my tastes are rather specific and the finding of gay vanilla goth porn with a reasonable about of foreplay and models in my attraction range would cost way more time and money than I'm willing to invest. I am not judgmental about porn as long as it features consenting adults. (Yes, I know some asexual and hyposexual people use porn too. I just meant that they are the only ones who might not. Yes, I'm counting Victoria's secret catalogs if you are using them that way).

Let ze who is without porn cast the first mock.

I think it's creepy when people who are in favour of religious and sexual freedom behave like seventh graders over someone else's porn stash. Masturbation is nothing to be ashamed of, so let's drop it, okay? I'm far from George Lopez' biggest fan, but I think this saying of his is a pretty good one to live by, "Life is too short not to have an orgasm every day."

* BPAL's dropped a new 13 and Lunacy. Lucky for me both look impossible for me too wear so I needn't mourn my lack of funds to buy.

I really need to put together more ebay sales based on my collection spring cleaning, but I'm giving it one more swap iteration.

* The insurance kerfuffle finally got sorted and I have my drugs and hence an appetite again. Now to convince insurance I deserve lung meds.

* Speaking of eyes, I was awakened early this morning by the Optometrist's office. it seems that the manufacturer and the third party vendor both shipped my frames with heroic speed and they arrived today. O.o If I still wanted them, I needed to come pretty much right away as they were closing after lunch. As promised the frames were half price, compared to the bottom level of the commercial frames. * There was an Earthquake in Japan causing trouble with a reactor that didn't cool down. apparently, they have an earthquake failsafe system that automatically shuts things down in an earthquake, but one of them didn't work properly. Unlike the soviets, the Japanese are serious about multiple back up systems, so it's not an emergency just yet. There is terrifying footage of the related tsunami and a city in flames. The civilian airports are closed due to the disaster, but they are allowing distressed civilian planes to land at the Us military bases.

* Wow, I'd be hard put to think of a set of tests better designed to give me a case of the don't touch mes. I think the first lady found one of my fibro spots too, because pressing there isn't supposed to feel like being stabbed. Fun. Judging from the techies reactions, I'm betting things are okay. The first test was to make sure my arteries were still sending blood to extremities properly, and involved two kinds of probe and blood pressure cuffs on all extremities. The second test was to make sure my cf carrier syndrome isn't masking heart trouble and was a long set of ultrasounds with me breathing and not breathing on command. The main problem with the ultrasound was the pressing against my scars part, which I never like, but was significantly less unpleasant than the little probes.

I keep thinking of something karjack said recently, that she is sick of rape as character development for female characters.

* Recently, I was watching the Gosford Park commentary, and something Julian Ffellows said is stuck in my head. He was talking about why he made the American a vegetarian. he said that the food in those great houses is usually pretty terrible, and that it is traditionally considered ill bred to be fussy about one's food. One eats whatever horrible thing is on one's plate without complaint.

This means that regardless of my manners, I am rude by English aristocratic standards because I have allergies, that my friends with celiac are also rude by those standards. I am fascinated by this idea that something over which one has no control, something we are born with makes us all automatically ill masnnered by that standard.

I was born, not only common, but rude. O.o

I have said before that regardless of birth sex and class, I'd have hated living in Austen's time.
