* I was watching part of the Yves Saint Laurent biopic from a couple of years ago over lunch. It got to the scene where they were negotiating with the Americans via interpreters, and I wandered off into the kitchen to clean up lunch and change out a fly strip. I had this strange feeling of rightness, and then it dawned on me, I was half half listening in two languages while tidying up bowls and such. I never actually looked up. Until tonight. Me: Where are they going to store that thing. It's huge! What adult woman would want a human sized bear... Oh! The guy is fucking the BEAR! * The Trump Team argument for why the constitutional bar against Trump and his family profiting from gifts from foreign government does not apply to them, is that they are openly breaking the law which means it is magically not illegal. by the same logic, if you rob a bank in broad daylight without a mask it is not only not illegal, but you get to keep the money and murder as many people as you like in the process, since according to them if you openly break a law instead of doing it furtively it is not illegal. I do not understand how one can have a functioning society based on this principle.

* A reminder about my position on GMOs: My objection is to Monsanto’s business practices, such as suing small farmers over cross pollination and making it illegal for farmers to save “seed corn” for next year as farmers have been doing throughout the history of agriculture as it is suddenly, somehow “copy right infringement.”

I DO favor accurate labeling, as I always do for pretty much everything, as I feel like people should be allowed to make informed choices, but at the same time pretty much everything we eat is genetically modified because at some point humans tinkered by selecting for traits. Eat a banana? Radically modified over the course of human history. Eat any kind of grain pretty much? Modified by our human ancestors since before agriculture for increasing digestibility, yield, etc... This is why the paleo diet is a fiction: you literally can’t eat as pre-agriculture humans ate as the species have changed to much and anyway, which early humans, when, and where.

I feel like we need to be objecting or not objecting to things on a rational basis. anti-science bias is not helping us fix problems we rather desperately need science to solve like hunger, epidemics (anti-vaxxers), climate change (climate deniers).

* Victim Blaming and Policy: (TW: Abuse)

The classic story of my generation at school goes like this:

Someone is doing something horrible to you: beating you up, threatening you, using racist/homophobic/sexist taunts, threatening to or actively trying to rape you. The adult punishes you for telling, and lets the abuse continue.

Every Xer pretty much has stories like this. If they don’t, odds are, they were part of the problem.

I discovered later that that was deliberate. They turned schools for our generation into a shark tank under the theory that kids should work things out for themselves and that kids being bullied did something to deserve it. It was systematic and on purpose. A whole generation of teachers were trained that way.

It was just laziness in my opinion. It takes actual effort to properly monitor and intervene, and Boomers were all about not malign neglect. My Mother was trained this way, and hated it, because it went against all her instincts, and was why she ended up spending only two years in the classroom. It defies logic too, of course. If you reward instigators and bullies by heaping punishment on their targets, it just encourages more cruelty and bullying.

In the long run, it’s less work to nip that shit right in the bud. You consistently punish the people causing the bulk of the problems, you support kids apt to intervene for justice and model how to do it, and make things fair for the kids being hassled, you get a lot less trouble in your room generally, the kids are happier and safer, and they are apt to grow up into decent human beings instead of sociopaths, but humans are terrible at logic and picking the long term benefit over the immediate. As a result our generation were guinea pigs for the me generation’s collective decision not to protect children from each other.

This turns out to be one of the areas where doing the ethically correct thing is also the pragmatically correct thing. (Another area like this is raiusing the minimum wage. you make the minimum wage a living wage and design the tax code, etc. to limit extreme inequality, the economy booms. you do what we’ve done since 1980, and fix the tax code to reward wealth and punish work, while letting wages for the working and middle classes erode, you get things like the Great Depression or W.’s economic crash. The ethical thing is the pragmatic thing, but we;ve put the bullies in charge.)

* It turns out that my sister was the Ball faerie. It was the birthday present that got lost back in October. By itself, it's the best present she's gotten me in years. Omnomnom.

* I need to talk to you about toasting marshmallows again. At some point in my teens I realized that my way of toasting marshmallows was a nigh perfect symbol for my core approach to living. No really, hear me out. When I became Buddhist, I'd refer to this as "zen marshmallow" as a sort of in joke with my friends, but it is serious to me. (I’m not a zen Buddhist, but it makes a fine short hand.)

I am that person who slowly turns the marshmallow, attempting to toast it a perfect shade of brown on all sides. This is pretty much impossible to do. There may be a bit of bubbling or a pale line where the fire didn't evenly cook. The perfectly toasted marshmallow is not a thing you attain, but that doesn't mean it's a waste of time. The journey matters. The sitting and chatting with friends, family, and/or lovers; the staring meditatively into the fire, the warmth on your face and the sparks in the dark, the patient process of cooking are all valuable. They are every bit as much of the why of it as the moment one slides the toasted skin into one's mouth.

It is good practice for being present in the moment. It is good practice for stillness and patience. It is also very much about the fundamental principal that just because it can never be quite prefect, doesn't mean it's not worth doing. I apply that to pretty much everything in life. It works for love or policy or activism or teaching or gardening or baths. The Spirit of the Journey is the point. The marshmallow itself is a delightful extra.

Carry this with you as we attempt the marathon that is resisting and surviving the next for years. Carry this with you as you travel forward. It doesn't have to be a marshmallow, but the attempt is worthy in itself.

- Conundrum. I love Ensign Ro Laren. Worf being leader because he is wearing the fanciest decoration is logical. This episode strikes me as a mirror to the one where the crew is divided up and people have to do unaccustomed jobs. There they were working against type; here they are stripped down to their essences. Picard is about compromise and reasonableness. Worf is about protection. Riker is about flirting. Data is about being helpful. Geordi and Doctor Crusher are about fixing things in their respective realms. Of course, part of the point of this is to pull Riker and Ro out of their antagonistic positions within the command structure letting them interact as people. Unfortunately that ends up being romantic. Sigh. Of course it does. Louder sigh. I admit, I strongly prefer the Torchwood version of this plot, but it's not badly done here and is, of course earlier. I do like the way they are in character even when they can't remember themselves and how that plays into the denouement.

* My Washington State primary ballot came yesterday, so if you live here, keep an eye on your mailbox if yours hasn't turned up yet.

It's a huge field this year, even larger than there normally is in a Presidential election year, but please, please take the time to vote.

It truly does matter who represents us in the Senate and the House. It very much matters who the Governor and Lieutenant Governor are. (Seriously skim through the candidates' positions. Some of these folks are SCARY). State senators have a huge effect on Public school funding and policy, the state economy, and basic civil rights. I know a lot of the offices on the back side of the ballot are not sexy enough to get TV coverage of any kind, let alone ads, but trust me, it does matter who is Superintendent of Schools (one of these is using code words for dismantling the public system in favor of a crappy new scheme. There are four or five decent candidates in the field depending on your priorities. I know it's a lot of reading, but it really will matter for the kids trying to learn in this state) or on State Supreme Court. There should be a handy voter's guide in your mail also, so you can skim to eliminate people you definitely don't want, and the internet exists if you have a personal run off so you can research in depth.

The primary is important, as it determines which two candidates get on the November ballot. We've had a race where that ended up being two Republicans recently. We've had a race I can remember that was Democrat vs. Green. The more of us vote now, the more likely we can make state races win/win instead of lose lose.

Elections matter. Please VOTE!

* TNG, season 1, rewatch: I reached the episode with the drugs are bad m'kay public service message. What is interesting is the debate between Picard and Crusher about ethics and the prime directive. It really differentiates Picard from James "Prime Directive? What Prime Directive?" Kirk. Picard makes a really ugly decision because he believes in the Prime Directive Kirk ran rough shod over. Crusher argues for compassion; Picard is pretty clearly thinking about what happened to the Native Americans when white people showed up. The writing in the episode is still first season clumsy, but you can see the bones of where the show will go at it's best. Ethical debate and ideas are part of what made Star Trek, Star Trek, something J. J. Abrams likes pissing on in interviews and the first two reboot movies, and why I consider those unwatchable. This is also the episode Beverly Crusher's personality starts to fill out into the Crusher I remember. Progress. I am definitely seeing improvement in the back half of season 1, though I know perfectly well TNG will never really take me where I want to go.

* A white police officer in North Carolina violently beat up a black teenager in a school, throwing the child around like a stunt dummy instead of a human being as a punishment for refusing to leave a desk. He was a competitive powerlifter, choking and beating a teenaged girl. Pet his mamma is proud of him.

Look, I used to teach. You try not to let it get to the point where a kid has to go to the office, but it happens. Every now and then, a kid won't go. You call admin and they send the principle or vice principle down to sort it. Once in eight years did I have it go further than that and even then, he just grabbed the back of the desk and dragged it into the hall without touching or harming the child.

Not once did it cross my mind that one of my kids should be arrested for refusing to go to the office. How is that illegal? Assholish, yes! Illegal no! Somehow I doubt they'd be calling the cops if that was a white child refusing to go to the office. Somehow I doubt that if that teacher and admin were any good there would have been a police officer involved at all. Arrests should be saved for actual crimes, like sexual assault. There have been a number a sexual assaults in schools in this country over the past decade, and yet somehow those are not properly investigated and they do not generally arrest those boys. That is a real crime and the criminals who do it should absolutely be arrested, but for classroom discipline infractions? Hell no! When I was teaching the goal was to solve as much as possible right there between you and the child in question. If I had to call for back up? I considered that a serious failure. It is way better to have the relationship with the kids and the establish authority to get them to comply yourself. So when I see the stats on them arresting children of colour, particularly in the south for minor classroom infractions it's pretty clearly about racism and the prison industrial complex, but it's also about really bad teachers and administrators. I good teacher would never call a cop unless a child was immediate danger of life and limb. A good teacher periodically has to call Child Protective services because of danger to the students. A good teacher turns up at the end of the day to talk to the school counselor about someone's eating disorder, or cutting, or drug use, or possible suicidal ideation. A good teacher will call for help to protect students, usually from themselves and occasionally each other. I do not see how calling in a violent policeman to savagely beat a girl in front of her classmates is somehow helping that student.

It is a teacher’s job first and foremost to keep those children under zir care safe.

* Hours after the Amtrak crash near Philly, Republicans moved boldly to further increase the number of train accidents, by cutting their budget yet again. After all, given the large number of train accidents the last thing we need is proper track maintenance or the funds to complete mandated safety upgrades. Remember, train crashers only kill mere human type people and often destroy homes and small businesses and republicans believe the purpose of government is to serve the interests of corporate type "people" and the .1% who are to rich to use trains. Who cares how many people who work for a living get killed as long as we can pay for corporate welfare and protect the .1% from paying their share?

* Some further words about the Amtrak crash for the evening:

1. I am hearing a lot of speculation about the causes of the crash, but right now we know nothing about what actually happened to the driver. We do know that the safety upgrades would have prevented this crash, but not what led to the train going that fast in the first place. I'd like to put in a plea that we reserve judgement until there are actual facts to base it on. there are all sorts of reasons this sort of thing can happen: some of which are true accidents and no one's fault, others caused by things like negligence or malice. Let's wait to find out which this is before attacking a man who may be purely a victim. there is time enough for finger pointing when we know what actually happened.

2. I'm seeing a lot of people saying things like the engineer's inability to remember is "suspiciously convenient." No, it's not suspicious at all with a serious concussion. People often lose time immediately before as well as after the head injury. My Uncle lost not only the play in which he had a serious concussion, but the one before it one time playing High School Football. The time I was attacked at work, I lost about a minute before I was pushed into the counter as well as the entire ambulance trip and the early part of the ER, and I was messed up seriously at least a month after. It's unreasonable to automatically assume a man with a serious concussion is faking a few minutes of lost time. He was in an accident that could have easily killed him.

3. Again, I don't know if he's innocent or guilty, but you know what? Neither does anyone else, possibly including the engineer himself. So rather than rushing to judgement, let's all take a deep breath and let the crash investigators do their work.

* I've been seeing a lot of this in the news lately, so I just wanted to remind people that:

1. Correlation does not prove causation. Sure, there is a chance A causes B,but B could also be causing A, or C could be causing both A and B, or C could be causing A while Dis is causing B, or C and D could be causing A and B, etc.. Seriously, there are a whole lot of things that could be happening, but people who are ignorant or have an agenda often report a correlation as if it proves anything other than two particular things turn up together more than one would expect to happen at random.

2. In social sciences, it's usually impossible to remove all the variables so studies are by nature flawed. You can't do pure science because ethics and because people are complicated things. How flawed depends a whole lot on experimental design. It is a good idea to bring skepticism to findings that can't possibly eliminate large numbers of variables. You can't ethically toss live humans into a skinner box. You can't absolutely be sure what is happening when they are at home or out in the world. If a whole lot of studies with solid experimental design from a whole lot of people with different backgrounds over a long period of time point to a particular result, it is more likely to be true than a single study funded by an institution with a particular axe to grind is.

3. Humans are flawed and they all make biases and assumptions. Sometimes it takes decades or even generations for people to spot assumptions and biases. Everybody (including me) has a hard time spotting unexamined biases and assumptions without outside help. Again, those biases can completely screw up studies bot only in fields like education and sociology, but has and likely always will, ruin studies in fields like biology in experiments involving observation. (What colour is that fish? How big is the interior of that skull?) Buyer beware, folks. Read the experimental design. (Did they match populations for things like income? Is the sample really random? What is the sample size? How exactly are they measuring whatever they are measuring?) Find out who paid for the study. Find out if the scientist(s) have a strong ideological axe to grind. (I'm looking at you white supremacist bell jar guy).

* I haven’t written about the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, mostly because nearly everything I’ve seen in the press is speculative. It seems cruel to me to speculate in a way that verges on disaster porn in a situation like this when so many people are waiting to hear what happened to people they care deeply about. I’m mostly writing now as I am worried that the release of the details of the men traveling on Iranian and stolen passports has me concerned about the sort of racialized speculation I will wake up to tomorrow. Let’s try not to get ahead of the facts, okay? I know uncertainty is hard for people, but I think it is kinder to wait until more is known before finger pointing.

* Yesterday we brought in another car load and a half from the storage unit. I managed to sort and absorb a massive amount of miscellanea. This cull is particularly brutal. I am going to be getting rid of books along with a massive amount of mementos. (I found a birthday check I lost in 1993 from my long dead Grandmother in a card. I found love letters, and wedding invitations, and cards. Nearly all must go). I hate selling books, but it must be done. I have enough books for a whole other apartment this size full of bookshelves, library style, and am unlikely to live anywhere larger. It is still a little like slicing off bits of flesh. Some of these were parent's or grandparents, and I started buying books for myself in lower school.

Today Hector was particularly nightmare prone and I kept having to wake up and calm him down. About halfway through the sleep cycle I had that thing where I could barely turn over for the pain. Apparently I sprained my ankle yesterday at some point. (High pain threshold + plush constant widespread pain= i hurt myself all the time without noticing.) I ended up doing the serious muscle relaxant thing and lounging in bed with hector watching Boardwalk Empire thing. (I'm in season 3. Please don't tell me things I haven't seen yet). I am picking at the book boxes, sorting and moving things about.
