* 45 is holding the Health Care System hostage for Tax Cuts for the 2%. 45 hates working Americans so much, his current plan is to bankrupt hospitals and collapse the entire American health care system by cutting off all government health care payments until Trumpcare passes and 24 million people lose their insurance to pay for the tax cut for the richest 2% he is demanding.

Seriously folks. Congress is on recess. Not only are there the Saturday tax day protests all over, but now is an excellent time to turn up at town halls and Congress Critter's district offices, and/or call to insist health care should be a right. Do not forget to thank Congress critters who are displaying back bone on this topic as we know how apt their spines are to jellify if we don't keep on them.

* ...And the foot thing is postponed til nearly the end of the month. It is nobody's fault. A family emergency on the part of my doctor requiring travel. I really wanted to get it over with and the reschedule doesn't give me the weekend to recover, but family absolutely does come first and it's better she go. I managed to resprain the ankle I mildly sprained... whichever day it was I scored the starts. It's bad enough I'm using the crutch around the houe and it's not the ankle attached to the foot I cut open, which means I'd likely have had to get the wheel chair out if they had been cutting my foot open in a few hours. It is very annoying that my ankles sprain themselves when I'm just shuffling around, but it's an ex athlete thing. That decade I spent distance running over rough terrain and concrete and endlessly injuring them when I was young, coming back to haunt me. I don't have a lot of cartilage and they are fragile. I'm lucky I never hurt myself dancing. That's a good way to take out a knee, for example. I knew athletes who started knees surgeries in high school. The running destroyed my ankles and the AS is gnawing my spine and hip joints, but my knees are doing pretty well given the pounding I gave them with the running and dancing and Wing Chun.

* TOS Rewatch, Season 1:

- "Devil in the Dark:" This one starts pretty well, actually. The set is above average, they quickly establish the terror of the miners and create suspense. The first death is before the credits. It's so weird when ToS is actually competently executed. Of course, it's an all human sausagefest in the mines because in the Federation only men mine as was established in the first Harvey Mudd episode, and ToS is extremely human centric even by later star Trek standards. I don't know how to feel about Kirk and Spock exchanging positions on the Horta. Nimoy's performance really is haunting. There is a reason this one is on most favorite episodes list, because this one really does work as an entertainment and a message.

- "Errand of Mercy:" A cold war episode. Prime Directive? What Prime Directive. Let's go introduce ourselves to a Medieval tech planet and damn the consequences. Yes, I know there is more going on than meets the eye, but the Feds and the Klingons don't know that. When the locals point out they are not really being given a choice they aren't wrong. For all the pretty talk from the Feds they are colonizers here, just politer ones than the Klingons. They consider themselves in a position to judge whether this culture is worthy. Kirk's fury at pacifism and his foolishness in somehow not being aware that bugs and hidden cameras are a thing even though that's old tech when these shows were made and I doubt the Federation has completely lost the skill to make and use surveillance tech. Why even would you send Kirk on this mission given how completely incapable of impulse control he is and how he doesn't do any diplomacy that doesn't involve sticking his Dick in something. I do get that they are poking at the idea of how similar or different Feds and Klingons are but it's just slow and clunky, especially compared to the much easier to watch horta episode right before it.

* Tavy Update: He's not attacked me in my sleep in weeks and is doing fairly well with me on soft paws. (I get the occasional accidental clawing where he leaps to high chasing string or the like, but I don't count obvious accidents). He's not generalized this to Squirrel, alas and the poor man is getting mauled on the regular. With me, he comes to bed for cuddle naps and head scritches, for Squirrel, he comes to start trouble with him and LM. him getting much worse behaved with squirrel coincides loosely with my cracking down on extreme cat harassment in the rooms I control in the apartment. (I'm dominant in my bedroom, my bathroom, and the common areas, but I don't go into Squirrel's room and bathroom if I can at all help it, and am clowder dominant generally). I've been enforcing no conflict zones, right to eat, and no cornering cats where they can't escape, which are the rules LM learned to protect Hector and now is experiencing from the other end. These are more subtle rules and not easily piggy backed on instinct, so it's going to be a slow project. I do see progress and it's really helping LM's stress level, but my theory is he is going ape shit in Squirrel's room in response. Squirrel's mostly working on trying to get him to generalize soft paws and no biting at this point, as he should be at this stage, and just generally working on bonding.

This would be so much easier if he had another kitten his age to play with, but I really can see him settling into routines that work better in the configuration we have.

The police being racist, decided to deny her emergency medical treatment, preferring instead to kill her my locking her in a cell until she literally died of her injuries. The media is ignoring it, being also sexist and racist and the police are refusing to comment on their racism and the choice to kill the woman instead of acting like decent human beings with a modicum of conscience would. There is no plan at all to arrest or even investigate the dangerous perpetrators involved in the crime. These dangerous thugs are still at large, armed and dangerous.

* No, news media. When you let the debate over rest rooms be framed as the North Carolina law "prevents men from using the women's room," you are NOT being neutral. You are taking a side. You are siding with the transphobes. you are agreeing that transfolk don't exist.

What their law actually does is REQUIRE Men to use the women's room and forces a particularly vulnerable population of women to use the Men's Room knowing full well the history of violence and assault aimed at the women in our community and the ongoing threat to their safety. Media, when you let the transphobes set the terms of debate, you are cosigning their call to out our women and children and are endorsing the resulting violence against them. You are COMPLICIT in all the violence.

Please, news media, correctly gender us in all news items whether about bathroom discrimination or our obituaries after we are murdered.

* Tiny Terror (Tavy) has been seriously stressing out LM this week. I'm having to get more aggressive about his social training for her well being. He's on his third time out since 11PM. I hate having to do it. To be fair the time out is in Squirrel's room. He has litter, water, and food, plus plenty of places he voluntarily likes to hang out. I am not a monster. Still, I hate doing it, but I will not punish her because he's not learning social boundaries fast enough, and she just wanted a pet and a nap on her spot on the sofa, Poor Thing. The irony is not lost on me that she used to be even worse with Hector when she was young and aggressive, but still it is pitiful watching her.

* In other news, Squirrel is back to work tonight for the first time. He's lost most of two month's pay, so is seriously fucked for money which means we are both fucked on things like the electrical bill, but he didn't die, which is a thing that could easily have happened, so we're calling it a win.

* How cartoonishly evil are Congressional Republicans? They hid a clause in the Defense Authorization Bill taking a sacred burial ground from the Apache to give to a mining company to desecrate even though that company sold uranium to Iran and the whole stealing a sacred burial ground from Native Americans who have already have so much stolen from them is blatantly evil.

* Congressional Republicans want to remind you that the Bush financial crash and recession was such a good thing for the 1% that it is crucial to repeal the reform designed to prevent that happening again. It is so important that the taxpayers bail rich people out when they destroy the economy that they, and a handful of spineless house Democrats voted to keep that in the budget extension bill. Now it's on to the senate, where the incompetent and spineless Harry Reid is blocking a vote to yank the Citigroup written and funded repeal. Can we replace that Scrotum, Harry Reid, with Sherrod Brown in senate leadership? Because we need an intelligent grown up with a spine next time.

* Republican Senator Tom Coburn hates our troops so much that he is single handedly blocking the Clay hunt Suicide Prevention Bill. After all, it saves money if we deny or combat veterans psychiatric care so that they literally kill themselves. This is what the Republicans mean when they say they are "supporting the Troops:" they literally want to deny them life saving medical care because they love wars, but hate the women and men who fight them, considering them parasites for wanting us to keep our promises of benefits to them. Remember, contracts with the rich are sacred, but contracts with ordinary people are wasteful entitlements. It's part of a pattern of extreme cruelty and a national shame.

I need to do up another set of ebays including the exhausting task of making an imp packet up. I am not sanguine about the packages I'm sending out. Uncle John didn't answer my last letter. I am worried he moved again. No one from the family sent birthday stuff, except my sister who sent something I'd have liked if it wasn't half my size, so I could be spending money I need for gas and toilet paper on gifts to people who will send nothing back. I am being a grown up and doing it anyway. I'm something like $100.00 short on subsistence this month, which is an improvement, but next month will be terrible with the fees adding up due to the shortage and we haven't saved a dime for next property tax bill.

Don't worry, both the UK Conservative and the US Republican economy are planning to take strong action to further shrink the economy by taking even more from the poor to give to the rich. A cherry on top is that here in the US the Republicans wrote a repeal of a key part of the weak legislation passed to prevent another collapse like the one under Bush into the budget extension and Democrats were so spineless as to let them. After all, imagine how much more damage a second world economic crash would do to ordinary human type people while once again benefiting the wealthy.

The CIA systematic tortured people, some of them picked up for crimes such as trying to warn about terrorist threats for no good reason at all. Their own documents show they got no useful information, which is what interrogation experts were saying all along, but systematically lied about it. They anally raped people in our name with taxpayer money. They committed these horrendous crimes against humanity and there are still not going to be war crimes trials for those who tortured all these people including 26 completely innocent ones, nor for those who ordered it to be done.

* As to policy approaches to the problem of police shooting whoever they like with no accountability I favor the following: 1. An independent special prosecutor's office that only handles shootings by police with solves the problem of expecting regular prosecutors to enthusiastically prosecute the very people they rely on to make their jobs work. 2. Require police to carry the equivalent of malpractice insurance. As with Doctors ones who are repeatedly getting sued for racial profiling, brutality, misconduct, etc., will eventually be unable to find ensurers. It's not perfect, but it's better than endlessly rehiring violent racists and/or sex offenders which is the current practice. (Obviously the current practice of police killing about as many unarmed black men a year as lynchings used to is a huge problem, but why not also work on the persistent under reported problem of police sexually harassing and abusing women they encounter while policing while we are at it). 3. Requiring police departments to have the same racial and gender makeup of the communities they serve.

I'm not holding my breath, so in the mean time, things like organizing cop watch programs is a good idea, as is funding mandatory body cameras. Again, it won't solve the underlying problems, but stop gaps are better than nothing.

Sierra Leone is currently in the most distress with Guinea emerging with problem areas not getting served. There are still not nearly enough Doctors on the ground in Sierra Leone and Guinea and the hospital bed shortage in Sierra Leone remains acute. Guinea is at the tipping point, where if things get worse there won't be enough personnel and supplies to handle things.

* Even though the video of the police drive by hit on a sixth grader in Cleveland show that the child was alone, not threatening anyone and the drive by took a literal two seconds, the police are sticking with the lie that the child somehow looked twenty and that he had a huge posse of imaginary friends, that they stopped the car and ordered him three times to put down the toy pistol and that even though he didn't he pointed the toy gun at them. While there is no sound on the video, there is not enough time in two seconds for them to have ordered him to have put down the gun once, let alone for him to react or for them to have ordered him to do it three times. Go on, time it yourself, but the police insist that you should believe whatever lies they choose to make up about there cold blooded murder of a child instead of your own eyes.

I am someone who's been followed at night by creepy white men who mean me harm. I've been trailed for a couple miles in the dark by a guy who kept trying to get into my blind spot. (I kept adjusting my position to keep my eye on him. We got to a populated area, and he gave up and peeled off). I have been followed by packs of scary ass white men screaming at me. I've been chased by packs of construction workers. I've been followed by men in cars when I was on foot, both lone men and packs. I've had a guy try to grab me into his car in broad daylight on my way to work. (It was rush hour and I was deliberately walking on the sidewalk opposite to the direction of traffic. I sped up, and he couldn't chase me properly because the cars behind were honking).

Zimmerman's attorney told the lie that if George Zimmerman was black, he wouldn't have been arrested. I call bullshit. If he'd been black, he'd have been arrested on the spot; he'd have been drug tested; the police would have investigated properly instead of just letting him go. If George Zimmerman were black, it wouldn't have taken massive protests to get even a half assed response from authorities to the murder.

The question we should be asking is what would have happened if Trayvon Martin was a white girl. Picture the set up again: a white teenaged girl in sweatshirt and jeans is walking home from the store with skittles and tea. A grown ass man is following her in his car. She gets scared and cuts away to a foot path. The man is armed with a gun and gets out and follows her on foot. Think how fucking terrified she would be. Now imagine that there is a scuffle and he shoots the unarmed 17 year-old girl. Would there even be a question that she had a right and a need to defend herself and the man who stalked and killed her is a dangerous offender? No, of course their wouldn't.

I am white, but I've walked alone in the dark with men and groups of men following me, and I think it must have been fucking terrifying for Trayvon Martin. I was someone who studied martial arts seriously and was prepared to go down fighting and I am pretty sure that being white if I had been murdered in Annapolis, Corvallis, Eugene, or Philadelphia, they'd have arrested the person who stalked and killed me, investigated the crime, and made a serious effort to put my murderer away no matter how hard I defended myself as an unarmed person. Similarly, there was a guy in my dorm at my second college who got a lot of street harassment and who had been violently assaulted by frat boys previously. I'm pretty fucking sure that those of us who took turns escorting him places at night wold have been treated as people acting in self defense if we'd had to fight off more assailants trying to hurt him.

Part of the dehuminizing of African American men is the way we as a society disregard Trayvon Martin's right to be afraid. Trayvon's right to defend himself from a dangerous predator following him home at night is valued less than the fear a man with a gun in a car felt on seeing a teenager walking him from a store with candy. It is clear to me, as someone who's both walked in the dark with predators following and who's driven a car at night, the George Zimmerman posed and existential threat to the boy he murdered, whereas an unarmed pedestrian poses zero threat to a man in a car who can just drive the fuck away.

Trayvon Martin was a human being who had a right to fear the man who murdered him. Trayvon Martin was a human being who had the right to defend himself. Trayvon Martin was a citizen who deserved law enforcement taking his murder seriously and the same quality of investigation and prosecution of his murder that a white classmate would have had. Trayvon Martin both alive and dead deserved equal treatment under the law as any other citizen. Trayvon Martin was a human being with feelings and the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit f happiness. The fact that he (and so, so many others) was denied all these things that should be everyone's birth right here in the 21st century is a travesty and an indictment of our whole system.

I am not Trayvon, but I empathize with him. I am not Trayvon Martin's mother, but I've seen a murdered love tried in the press as if he were the criminal and not his murderer, and I sure as hell empathize with her. I honestly don't understand how their can be so much empathy for a man who stalked and killed an innocent child and none for the murdered child's pain and fear. It seems to me that we really need to take a good hard look at the kind of racism that makes it possible for people to argue that it's okay to get out of your car and track down and shoot people whether it's Trayvon or that boy in the back of the SUV listening to music or hundreds of other unarmed teenagers that have been killed since Trayvon on the grounds that them minding their own existence is so terrifying that pre-emptively shooting them to death counts as self defense.

* I have never liked Rahm Emmanuel. Apparently, my super low opinion isn't nearly low enough. Remember all those public schools he's closing, knowing full well that those kids are going to lose 6 months to a year of academic achievement due to being uprooted and that 91% of the kids being put into overcrowded classrooms instead of smaller clases in their neighborhoods are on free and reduced lunch? It turns out, while he somehow doesn't have enough money to keep neighborhood schools open, he has 55 million dollars to waste on building a stadium as a give away to a private business. After all, which is a better use for $55 million of taxpayer money than educating the children most in need of it or corporate welfare? Clearly, punishing the children of the poor by denying the education is a top government priority, since the families vigorously protesting the thing he's doing to them don't even register compared to his rich friends wanting a kick back. I have no words, really.

If Chicago has a surplus of 55 million Dollars that they can afford to waste this way, why are they closing schools? Any one with even an unce of decency wouldn't hesitate to invest that money in children's education instead of just throwing it away on a give away to a sports team.

Big Spoilers. Small Review: )

* I've been watching the Director's Cut of the original Alien. I was not allowed to see this in the theater, as my parents wanted to see it before letting me see it. I watched it the first time when it hit cable within a year or so of coming out. I loved how real it looked, the grittiness of the set design. I loved that Ms. Weaver looked like a particular girl in my neighborhood only grown up. I loved that she looked like she could really be an astronaut: athletic, intelligent, and mentally and emotionally tough. I'd never seen a lead character like that before and it was exciting. I was a kid raised on science fiction and monster movies and it was just so exciting to see her taking charge and fighting back. Ripley was real to me in a way most characters I saw on TV or in movies could never be. When I got older, there were other things I came to appreciate about the movie, but as a sprout, it was all about Ripley.

So here I am watching it again, amazed at how well it holds up. How many movies made in the last thirty three years have special effects that look as good even a year or two after release as the effects in this look right now? How many genre films have a real artist working out an unusual person vision in this detail and with such monumental feel? How many SF/horror genre movies made in the last year have a female lead at all, let alone one as tough and smart as Ripley? Not very many. (Off hand, I can only think of the lead in that hot mess Prometheus, though I must be missing something). See my rant about frat boydudebro leads in action/sf/superhero/etc. movies above. Ripley has no romantic plot in this first movie. She stands up for what is right in the face of the captain's direct order. She wants answers. She wants herself and the crew as a whole to survive. She is focused and professional and practical. 33 years later, and I still root for her. Would I like the crew to be more diverse? Yes. While the one character of color in the film comes off well, especially compared to pretty much everyone but Ripley, he's still a space janitor. This is a problem, like the token inclusion of the '70's so often was. Still, one roots for him, especially when no one is listening to him talk sense. (Contrast with Idris Elba's captain in Prometheus, though.) So yes, the movie isn't perfect, but hardly anything is, and it kicks Into Darknesses ass on so many levels, even watching it on my living room TV set. Seriously, watch the face hugger close up when they are poking it after it comes off the John Hurt character's face. Damn! So here's to you, Alien, for outlasting the decades with considerably more grace than I've managed.

* Today Democrats threw LGBTQ folk under the bus to pass immigration reform. Instead of treating same sex marriages the same as opposite sex marriages, they have decided it is in the governments best interest to continue to discriminate against same sex couples, by breaking them up by denying husbands and wives the same residency rights as straight couples. * A girl in Florida was dating a younger girl at the same High School. She turned 18 so they arrested her and want to charge her as a pedophile complete with sex offender registry. After all, just because dating was legal a day previously should not be taken into consideration the way it generally is with a heterosexual couples. (Most statutory rape laws have a "romeo and Juliet clause" to prevent these sorts of prosecutions where the couple is close in age and the sex is consensual. In states that don't there is usually a warning and maybe a class. If the older girl had been a boy, she would have had a warning, not felony charges):

* They have discovered that shame is a good way to get out the vote, so there is a thing now where a third party sends you a Voter Report Card before the election showing how often you voted compared to your neighbors. They then send another after the election as a sort of threat. Mine came today. They only track participation in General elections and only the last five. Of course I'm five by five, having missed only one general election and one primary since I turned 18. (Both for moves, the general being the move from Annapolis to Oregon in '90). I grew up in a political household and we played voting on the practice machine when I was a baby. Voting was always serious business to me. Anyway, they thing that impressed me was that the average was three out of five for my neighborhood, which is really high considering how many college students are packed into various apartment complexes on my block, and how many may have only been eligible to vote in 1-4 elections total. Voting three Novembers in a row is impressive for the age group. For sure there are single family houses and some families or older adults in the area, but we are way numbered. Things like this look hopeful to me. You go college students! Rock the damned vote!

* I'm at the stage where I keep playing with my hair because the texture is so strange to me. I've been with short haired men over the years, but as I've always liked longer hair on men, whether the classic afro, the white version, or long straight or wavy locks, and I never got used to the feel of short hair on other people's heads, if that makes sense. I actually remember making out with my first short haired man during my first fall as St. John's and feeling daring and wicked as I rubbed it. Short hair felt weird and forbidden. It still does, even on my own head. Brain wiring is a peculiar thing sometimes.

* I'm actually of the opinion that she was innocent: http://thequackdoctor.com/index.php/valentines-meat-juice/

Her husband was an arsenic addict, and his family went to lengths to get the poor battered woman convicted on extremely circumstantial evidence. (There wasn't arsenic in the bottle and the roll of meat juice was never proved.) It is likely that he actually died of arsenic withdraw. Arsenic builds up in the system and withdraw releases all the effects of the arsenic the addict has taken in small doses over time at once. Without modern medical testing that can distinguish a large dose taken at once from small amounts taken over time, study stomache and digestive tract contents, etc. it's hard to distinguish. (There was a similar Victorian case in the U.S. involving an army veteran where the wife got off because she ate the donuts in front of witnesses, so they could see they weren't poison. In that case, she was likely guilty of deliberately depriving him of arsenic to kill him. It's impossible to prove at this late date). Anyway, in the English case, she had a lot of supporters as it was a very messed up investigation and trial, and she was eventually released, though her life was pretty much ruined. It's impossible to prove at this late date, though to the best investigations of the case moderns can bring to it, it looks more like arsenic withdraw than murder. Also, given the severe physical and emotional abuse she was subjected to, I would be hard put to blame her if she'd murdered them all, frankly. Anyway, it's fun to speculate.
