* It's looking likely I'll be sacrificing my meds to buy Squirrel's as he Can't go without safely and there is a chance the car will take everything he has, and I have enough back up to likely carry me through. A lot depends on where on the 400-500 scale the car comes to. 500.00 is his ceiling and I have the car insurance auto payment and meds money left, plus a little earmarked for a bill I was going to have to not pay any way this month, so I can toss it in instead of putting in a partial payment. Which means electrical and Internet don't get paid, but I'll have a car that works in the day time. We are lucky as fuck squirrel hadn't paid electric yet, as rent and first bill go out of my account first week of the month.

* I have been watching the Royal Ballet's Manon, which just makes me wish I were watching Ashton's far superior Marguerite and Armand. It is... exactly the sort of thing I expect from Kenneth Macmillan really. It's mostly mediocre choreography, indifferently danced. Normally, I adore Carlos Acosta, but the choreography does not play to his strengths. Ms. Rojo admittedly makes a far better Manon than she did a Marguerite, but honestly the fundamental misogyny of the piece makes it incredibly hard to watch even when the choreography and her dancing are working well together. There are moments where the dancing and choreography do combine to make something both visually stunning and prone to fill one with nausea at the same time, and experience I have come to think of as peak MacMillan. For example the Pas de trois toward the end of act one: beautifully danced but watching those men paw her... *shudder* I want a shower. Do people really watch these for fun? I am done. I was trying to get a proper sampling for the sake of my education, but he' so aggressively rapey, and worse, his best choreography is always about things that should never be made beautiful, like the gang rape in Judas Tree.

* I decided I would likely never fly again after last time for health reasons. I simply am not well enough for 24-36 hour sagas involving long layovers requiring sleeping on airport floors and being jammed like a sardine into coach, not even for funerals for the last two family member i have left. Watching TSA intimately grope a twelve year old under the new extra intrusive guidelines confirmed this decision as I'm a member of two minorities that get extra scrutiny which makes every checkpoint an adventure. I worry some airline employee will have me no fly listed because they don't like which bathroom I use and I'll get stranded mid-country with no way home. I worry each time they will confiscate my meds instead of just interrogating me extensively about them while I get to stand there in pain explaining cf carrier and AS to them. I hated the old part downs as I don't like strangers touching me and I'm required to not hit these particular strangers. Watching the new more intrusive version I know I simply can't do it. Not even once, let alone the multiple times required for cross country travel.

And now the airlines have a policy of randomly selecting old men to be brutally beaten and dragged off planes, not for any crime, but to make room for last minute employee travel. United Airlines insists it was the old man’s fault they decided to have four thugs randomly beat him unconscious for their convenience and out of reflex the Chicago PD, which wasn’t even involved, is lying about what happened to blame the victim as well instead of arresting the thugs for their unprovoked assault, because the Chicago PD always backs thugs in authority over the rights of the victims. Fuck that! Fuck all of that. I love flying, but I want nothing to do with what it’s become.

* Republicans want to remind you that raising health care costs for Middle and Working Class Americans and the Elderly by about 1500.00 a year and kicking millions of the working poor off their health care while dramatically cutting Medicaid is absolutely necessary to give the extremely wealthy CEOs of insurance companies their massive tax breaks. They promise expected rise of 30% in what people will have to pay for health care next year under their plan will actually help the working poor and Middle Class by forcing them to pay money they don't have to not die.

* Jason Chaffitz is so rich and incredibly entitled he thinks people making minimum wage have a month's pay to waste on an iphone seven instead of spending that on NOT BEING HOMELESS. The choice he is asking people to make is not between a luxury and health care, but Rent and Healthcare. Yes, Mr. Chafitz, it is about choices. Choosing to pay rent IS the responsible choice for the working poor, but YOUR CHOICE to literally kill people by denying them health care to pay for yet another tax cut fior the very rich rich is cruel and evil.

* At least 34 people in one attack and 15 in another (with two bombers) are dead in Nigeria. Boka Haram, being cowards, has been turning little girls into suicide bombers, likely the ones they've been kidnapping, though it's not proved yet. Boko Haram has killed more civilians than any terrorist group, including ISIS.

* So a pretty alarming thing just happened in Mali. I'm going to give you a little background first. There's been long running trouble between the people in the North of Mali and the government in the South. Over time, people who got exiled or were wanted by the government, particularly Tariq people went north across the Algerian desert to Libya, where many of the men signed up to serve in the military. Remember that tank convoy and various military transports spotted going South during the overthrow of Kadafi? Those were deserters taking weapons an vehicles back to Mali, where they formed the core of a Tariq separatist uprising in northern Mali. The more secular wing of the uprising quickly got overwhelmed by the religious extremist wing and it became one of those monstrous extremist nightmares that goes around destroying cultural treasures, burning books, killing moderate Muslims, etc.. Some of you will remember the heroic efforts of the people of Timbuktu to hide and smuggle out irreplaceable and unique early Islamic manuscripts.

Mali's government wasn't up to a challenge of this magnitude and French and Pan-African forces have been helping them fight. The pro-government forces have been doing well. The French being there is a thing that is politically complicated because of their history of colonialism in Mali, which I'm not going to get into in depth, but their plan to pull out in the near future was a bit of a relief to pretty much everyone in the region, who given many of the neighboring countries' history with colonialism and French colonialism in particular, is not surprising.

At 7AM local time (my last night), the extremists took a large hotel frequented by international travelers hostage. Government forces with help from french special forces were taking it back floor by floor when I went to bed. It is thought they had over a hundred hostages at one point. Reports continue to be a bit chaotic and contradictory. It is thought the attackers are dead. It is thought approximately 20 hostages were killed. The French withdraw has been cancelled.

* My scheduled thing got moved, so today was supposed to be a bureaucracy day, but Hector wouldn't stop hurting me when I was sleeping so I couldn't do it. He's pretty manicky today just generally but I got him to eat, so i attempted some experimental baking even though he was way too interested in what was going on. I put the experimental pie in the oven, cleaned up, and went to write up events in Africa. He WOULD NOT leave things in the kitchen alone. I kept having to go in there to do things like fish him out of the trash can. He knew I was making a bread smell in there and he wanted whatever I was making RIGHT NOW! He eventually flung a glass flour canister off a shelf, managing to break one of my Great grandmother's plates in the process. Glass everywhere. It's likely too damaged to glue together and I'm not up to trying tonight.

I want to make clear, I am not feeding this cat pie, but that doesn’t stop him throwing a tantrum on the off chance.

* I watched The Hollow Crown: Henry IV pt. 1. The Henry IV's are amoung my least favorite Shakespeare plays, but I was promised Hiddleston and they did such a brilliant job with the very difficult to do well Richard II, that I gave it a try. I am not sorry. My fundamental problem with IV pt.1 I it is full of pointless cruelty with a particularly nasty clsss based underpinning all framed as if it is funny. It's not something I find funny. Seriously, that thing where they torment the pot boy, who's poverty is extreme by offering him a huge sum of money then making him say anon... Incredibly, pointlessly cruel.

I think one of the reasons this adaptations works for me is that the people making it clearly get how appalling this is. Most Shakespeare adaptations re so full of reverence for the Author, that there is a portentousness and exaggeration to the acting. There is so often an air of trying a little too hard about the comedic bits and it's a little too easy to overact the dramatic bits. This production treats the dialog like dialog, if that makes sense. They speak the lines as if they were modern instead of as if they were poetry. This makes a huge difference in the feel of the thing.

What Hiddleston does with Prince Hal is kind of brilliant. Hiddleston's charisma really helps, but the genius is in the way he plays the horrible pranks. It's rather like the "Loki'd" short he did a few years ago. He plays his Hal a little bit dorky, as a likable, but awkward doofus who isn't quite sure how far is too far and keeps trying anyway to be the class clown so that the cool kids will like him. He plays his Hal in such a way that it's clear the jokes don't quite work because they are sort of childish and aweful and nearly always a little too much. The result is that instead of a callous brute, you get a significantly more subtle character study of a rich kid trying too hard to fit in with a rough crowd.

The performance also really invites you to think about what his childhood and relationship to his father must be for him to run around behaving like this. The little playlet section is pivotal for this. When Falstaff plays the King, he is playing A King. When Hiddleston's Hal plays the King, he is very distinctly playing Jeemy Irons playing Henry IV. It is unnerving and uncomfortable but it really sucks you into the psychology of it. The scene goes from a mocking jest to ouch rather quickly as a result, which is perfect.

There are lots of clever little moments in the acting all over the cast like that. Hotspur's much put upon wife repeatedly punching his arm in exasperation under witch there is an obvious affection. Little moments where Fallstaff's expression suggests that under the bluster there is both self awareness and a deep vulnerability. The moment where Hal and his brother simultaneously realize their father is mortal in an imminent rather than abstract sense.

Look, I'm never going to like watching either Henry IV, but this was riveting and the performances are brilliant, even though the battle scene suffered rather from budgettary limits. This interpretation really works for me in a way that no other version I've ever seen did. (Yes, that includes My Own Private Idaho. I love all the Rent Boy bits in it, but the explicitly Henry IV parts are excruciating, and I mostly skip those when I watch so as to get back to River Phoenix). This is the Henry IV made for people who don't like Henry IV. I am excite to see if they can manage to make pt. 2 interesting which would pretty much be a miracle).

I have decided I like Barbara Stanwick just generally because she looks like she has no fucks to give about your bullshit. So far I like Night Nurse and that one about people who met during a WWI bombing in London best. Night Nurse was a bit surreal as it was directed by one of the first people to use a boom mike, and as a result is shot in a very modern looking style compared to the others, with dolly shots and camera zooms, while at the same time being from a time before nursing schools and shock paddles existed, so I had this weird dissonance between the modern shooting techniques and this completely alien medical culture where they kept nurses in dormitories and it was considered unethical to report obvious malpractice or take a dying child to the hospital. O.o Please tell me the ethics are fictional, because O.o.

* At some point over the Summer, I watched both Season of the Witch and Black Death. It was rather interesting. They made two very different movies from very similar set ups. (A motley mixed band of grizzled old warriors and a young cleric go on a long journey through pestilence ravaged landscapes to destroy a witch. Some of the party are not convinced they are dealing with a witch, while others are. Things do not go as planned). To my great surprise, Season of the Witch was actually watchable, which puts it far ahead of nearly everything else Nicolas Cage has done in the last couple decades. They cleverly used his burned out non-acting to convey burn out and matched him up with my beloved Ron Perlman and the lively Robert Sheehan. It worked reasonably well. It wasn't brilliant, but it was worth seeing once, mostly for Mr. Pearlman, and had a serviceable action plot.

Black Death, on the other hand, was legitimately good. It had Sean Bean, Starking it up, as he does. Eddie Redmayne is far from my favorite actor (I can't tell if it's my personal prejudice because he looks so much like a virulent misogynist I did 12 years with at that horrible school I went to as a child, and my deep hatred of the Other Boleyn Girl, or something about him.), but he was well cast here and doing a beautiful job with the acting. There was a fine mix of secondary players, and a remarkable amount of depth to the story. There was an underlying philosophical debate. There was deep ambiguity and complexity. The plot was pretty simple, but the characters and world weren't. I'm still playing with it, a couple of months later. How many movies I saw in the last can I say that about? I'm thinking maybe three. It's not an easy movie; it is dark as fuck. Seriously, Hob's last line in the film and it's delivery haunt me. (Hob is played by Tim McInnerny, best known for playing a fool on Black Adder, but currently playing a villain on Outlander. Talk about range...). Seriously, I turn over his answer in my head, so simple and true and tragic.

* Yesterday, the Red Cross and women related to the Ukrainian sailors under blockade by the Russians in the Crimea were trying to sneak them food and water, but the Russians sent them back at gun point. Today, a food shipment got through to the ships, at least. Twelve Coast Guards ships just broke free of the blockade, but I'm not seeing a lot of details. Today, the Crimean Regional Parliament voted to hold a referendum on whether or not to rejoin Russia. Kiev is saying that's illegal, to no one's surprise. Meanwhile, we and the EU are maneuvering to try to figure out what sort of pressure to apply.

One of the wickedest things I ever did as a GM was back when the first ed. Vampire book was all the world of Darkness there was. I made a LARP where in some of the mission packets, we told them there were Sabbat spies. There were no Sabbat spies. We let them loose and watched them murder each other.

It was hilarious.

* Fighting continues in Kiev despite claims of a truce. Casualties continue to mount. The EU talks of sanctions. President Obama has issued a threat. Parts of Kiev continue to burn and people keep dying.

Added at 4:19AM: The police brought in reinforcements to try to take Independence square in violation of the truce, but the protesters repulsed them. Fighting continues to spread in Kiev. The official figure is seventeen dead, but honestly, it sounds like people are guessing. Most of the dead appear to be protesters shot in the head and neck by police with assault rifles.
