* I went to bed ridiculously early Monday night with a stabbed in the stomach sort of feeling. It was all fever dreams and lost people, but the long sleep did me good, I think. I'm still achieving bare minimum, but it is an acceptable level of function. I discovered on waking that thanks to your kindness, we are sorted financially for the month if we just wait out money transfer times, which is good news as I ran out of the secondary lung meds last weekish. I informed squirrel we were rescued when he came out for his dinner. The Terror was very bored with me being in bed so much. I awoke to a living room strewn with shredded paper and to discover he'd kidnapped the Borg Cube from the Gothmas tree. All has been set to rights now though.

Thanks again, to our benefactors.

- The Best of Both Worlds. Ouch, the mirror scenes with Guinan and the Captain, each sitting before a battle. Honorius and Picard; Picard and Riker. Ouch, the graveyard of Federation ships. Watching Locutus is painful still. I kept thinking that data hacking Picard here made like 100x more sense than Independence Day.

- Family. I really do appreciate that they make clear that time has passed since the Borg battle and that captain Picard has PTSD symptoms. At the same time Deanna picking that way at him wanting to visit family on shore leave brings me close to violence. She seems to be pathologizing and deliberately undermining what I would consider a pretty understandable decision. You'd think she'd want him to take time off to rest after being violated on every level like that. From the dialog it's clear he's been undergoing intensive therapy for the PTSD, so it's not like he's running out on early recovery stages. He's improved enough to leave the ship and like a bunch of the rest of the crew, he wants to go home for a visit. Why would a competent psychiatrist be against a man trying to mend fences with his brother, especially at a time when that man might need a support network outside his command structure? Seems to me reaching out to family would be encouraged not discouraged. It seemed to me working through bits of trauma arguing with his brother sounds therapeutic to me, and yes, that includes them having it out after a lifetime of bottling it up. I think this is another instance of Deanna Troi bringing her issues to therapy instead of doing what's best for the patient. Seems to me Picard was doing exactly what was best for him as part of the healing.

I kind of love Worf's parents.

Add in the A, B, and C plot (Wesley's recording from his dead father), and this whole episode is about how men need family support in times of stress, which is a beautiful thing to see, especially as Worf is about as aggressively masculine as it is possible to be and Picard is the quintessential captain most of the time. It's good to see men like that shown dealing with trauma and being vulnerable with loved ones.

This is another one that is all too timely here in the 21st century with it's record high suicide rate for military veterans, and yes, that's a personal issue for me, given who I lost that way. It is so incredibly important that Picard cries, that Picard has nightmares, that Picard is getting help and not issolating himself. It's so important that Worf lets himself open up for the parents that clearly love him, and yes, it's important that coming to terms with his father's death is a process for Wesley. I have often said that grief is a marathon and not a sprint.

* You know that robo poll I keep getting? The latest version added several extra state offices, including the Lt. Governor race I am particularly keen on. I am just weirdly excited about Mr. Habib maybe moving up. I suspect I get polled so much because odds are most of the people in my section of town don't have a land line, this being where a lot of college students, proffs, and affluent types cluster, all good demographics for smart phones.

Look a land line costs $5.00 a month, plus when a phone breaks it costs less than $10.00 to get a replacement at Value Village or goodwill. It also has nice big buttons I can manage despite my issue with fine muscle control. No, I'm not a luddite, and I'm happy for all y'all for whom smart phones work, but I doubt I'd buy one even if I could afford it as I simply haven't the fine muscle control in my hands for things like texting and trying to dial with tiny buttons and I drop things. Like a lot. Odds are good I'd break a phone and since I can't afford AAA any longer, I literally have no need for a mobile phone. Again, I know lots of people for whom mobile phones are a huge help and they do have a lot of accessibility for people with a different set of disabilities, they are just barely useful, too expensive, and super frustrating for me as I generally end up pounding multiple keys at once and dialing is an asshole.

* It is my belief that Punk, Goth, and Metal were at one point all Xer responses to us all believing we'd never see 30 between the Plague, Nuclear War, and Environmental Destruction. Punk is a raging against the dying of the light. Goth is "If we're going to live in the ruins, we might as well enjoy the aesthetics and have a good time with what's left." Metal is "If the Apocalypse is coming, might as well be horseman." Of course, back in the beginning they were all blurred lines.

* The Racism and Sexism has been a serious issue in the coverage o the Olympics this year. In my opinion it has always been a problem with the coverage and I've been complaining about things like body shaming female athletes and creepy racism in particularly opening ceremonies, but often just in general for as long as I can remember. I was really pleased that this year the rest of the country seems to finally be fed up with it.

One of the many reasons I've come to quietly loathe the male Equestrian commentator is that he is a man that looks at an athlete in her early thirty, clearly a grown woman, and calls her "girl." The thing is that I would be more more lenient with this sort of thing if they were talking about a fifteen year old gymnast, because that is a gray line, but you know what? I can't remember any of the Gymnastics commentators making that slip as they scrupulously called the women "athletes" on every occasion I can remember, which got me thinking about how much progress there has been in my lifetime in the area of Gymnastics commentators. See, it used to be gymnastics and figure skating commentators were the worst most sexist pieces of shit covering the Olympics. (I hated Dick Button with a passion over his cruel comments about the bodies of teenaged girls and was over joyed when he finally retired. Fuck you, Dick Button!) I still remember my fury listening to them relentlessly body shame Mary Lou Retton for having a muscular athletic body instead of looking skinny and pre-pubescent. A lot of world class gymnasts have developed dangerous eating disorders because of the pressure involved in trying to do one of the hardest sports in the world while under pressure to look delicate and frail. It has done irreparable harm to the athletes themselves and to all the little girls watching who wanted to be like Nadia or Mary Lou or Kerry or Gabby. It is already a cannibal sport that chews up bodies and spits them out damaged. We don't need adult men verbally obsessing over young girl's bodies and trying to make them feel like shit on top of that.

But this year was different. For all the shitty sexist things going on with the NBC commentary, gymnastics was... not perfect, but a damned sight better. There are still issues around age and weight, but every single comment I heard about the girl's bodies was either 1. The same sort of list of ACL injuries, illnesses, and the like they had for the male gymnasts, which is totally fair and pertinent to performance, or 2. Directly related to how some apparatus are a little easier or harder for people who are shorter or taller. They don't do this with the men, so I'd like to wave good bye to this, but I'm not sure I can convey to someone who can't remember how bad it was how much progress this represents.

There was horrible racist shit on the internet including from other gymnasts aimed at Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles,(I am really furious about the treatment of Ms. Douglas particularly), but not once did I catch the commentator's pulling out the racist unwoman meme or body shaming Simone the way they used to attack Mary Lou. I realize this is an incredibly low fucking bar, but it took most of my life time to get there and the rest of the NBC commentators don't seem to have gotten the memo, despite us being well into the twenty first century. Again, not perfect, especially around Gabby Douglas, Oksana Chusovitina, and a couple of the Chinese gymnasts, but I see a strong upward trend and I'd love the commentators in other sports to step up their game.

* Synchronized swimming is beautiful an I love that it exists, but at the same time, it is a very weird activity if you think about it. I mean, imagine being the first one to think, "Hey, why don't you and I hold our breathes a really long time underwater upside down while frantically waving our legs about in unison. Then after a bit I will throw you through the air without touching bottom."

* I also love that rhythmic gymnastics is a Thing. If they broadcast it, I would watch it every year the way I do figure skating. I suppose it's no surprise to anyone that watching ballet with props is one one of my favorite things about summer Olympics.

* I have been thinking a lot about why I'm so distressed at Prince's death. I know, I haven't written about him, possibly ever. I think it's because his life and music were such a powerful and pervasive part of who I was and who I became that it's hard to express properly in words and the memories woven into the music for me are so layered and complex. I think it's because I have no idea who I'd be now if I hadn't listened to him then.

I just keep thinking about the way he was not just a lifeline, but vision of how to move forward and do better than survive. I looked at him and for the first time I realized that I could take my different and make it beautiful. I could wear it proudly and confident. I could design an image that expressed who I was and where it outside. His music was the soundtrack of my teens. I had all the albums and played them over and over up in my attic. The music and the image together taught me how I could make myself free. He was a big part of me deciding from henceforth my life would be art. he played a huge part in how i processed my trauma. He played a huge part in me striding forth with no fucks to give about what other people thought about me, my gender expression, my sexuality. Because of him I really learned to revel and delight in my self. he was the most important light leading me out of an incredibly dark place, and there has been so much joy in life because of it.

How can one possibly put into words how grateful I am still for his music and his life. It gave me a gift that can never be repayed, but only passed on.

It is a horrible thought that he isn't out there being his genius, wonderful, gloriously peculiar self somewhere in the world.

Adam Rippon and Max Aaaron gave lovely mature skates, but as beautiful as they are to watch neither is on the level of the young men coming up in Asia. Nathan Chen skates like the future though, and I expect him to be giving Jin Boyang a run for his money soon, even though he does need to work on his artistic and performance aspects. The Ladies? The ladies broke my heart. There were some lovely passages, but all I kept thinking while watching them is how far they are behind the Russian women. I am old enough to remember when we were producing some of the best women skaters in the world, I'd like to see us do it again.

* I’m a member of two groups singled out for extra scrutiny. (No, not the obvious one). This means I get at least two forms of extra checks every time I go through a check point, sometimes more. I’m not afraid of flying, but I’m terrified of the TSA. What if someone takes exception to me existing during a stop over and I get trapped in the middle of the country with no money to get home?

I’m all for closing criminal background check loopholes and bringing back the assault rifle and extended clip bans, etc.., but I am against using the no fly list as a tool to stop gun sales because I am against the no fly list and have been since it was first being proposed. I am against extra judicial procedures. I am against the over throw of the rule of law. I am against the rising tide of authoritarianism. The no fly list needs to go and I will not compromise my beliefs for expedience.

* Today’s must do was get Hector Food. (Yet another drop below what the auto-withdraw will take for car insurance). It took me two and a half hours to achieve a functional body, but I did get extra function out of it, which it turned out I needed. I got a lot of things done around the house that needed doing, though not the thing I most needed to do. I’m calling it progress, even if that’s nearly it for spoons....And everything I wrote since the last posting went poof! Fun. What you're looking at is a reconstituted version. I want a lung treatment and cookies and a nap. None of these things are happening. No nap until lung treatment. No lung treatment until Hector wakes up naturally because he needs the sleep and I need the quiet. No cookies because if i had the spoons for baking, I'd be up doing the top three must dos that I blew off because I was nearly out of spoons when I discovered them.

* This isn't quite right. There isn't just one Philly accent any more than there is one New york accent. My accent isn't the same as the South Philly accent they are talking about, thought we share the extra vowels I once spent a fascinating few minutes teaching my linguistic professor. (Me: "No, that's New york. There's a subtle, but crucial difference." He picked it up surprisingly quickly. A lot of people out here can't really hear the difference). The accents of Philly aren't just geographical, but class based, and to a certain extent tied to race and ethnicity. People from different countries tended to settle in neighborhoods with other people from there. That was breaking down by the time I was born, but as with places like New York and New Orleans, with similar histories, certain neighborhoods developed accent variations that reflected the immigrant's accents, and while the lines shift and blur as people move around, an educated ear can tell that a person grew up in an area with a lot of yiddish, or Italian, or Irish, or southerners who came North after slavery, etc. even if the person is not from the group or groups that influenced the particular flavor of Philly speak. Still, this article is interesting. "The Sound of Philadelphia Fades Out:" http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/02/opinion/sunday/the-sound-of-philadelphia-fades-out.html?_r=0

* I am fundamentally uncomfortable with using Oppenheimer's words about the atomic bomb to sell a dating app. Seriously, that shit's creepy. People died. Using it to sell hook ups isn't right.

* All attempts to get a proper sleep before the trip to Mount Vernon failed. Mapquest lied as to the position of the hospital, but my guess that they meant left instead of right was correct, so we were not late. The procedure itself was short, but there are hours of observation afterwards, so it still took all morning. It didn't solve his heart thing, so they are switching his meds and we do it again in a month. The next attempt really needs to work as the thing they try after that is incredibly dangerous, instead of being the not a big deal thing they did today. We went out to breakfast, as he had to fast for the procedure and the only vegetarian thing they had at the coffee shop at the hospital was a nasty greasy pasta salad. (They usually had tasty sounding sandwiches, but they didn't come in the morning delivery.) I can recommend the shockingly good chai, however. So short version, Squirrel needs a couple days rest, but is no worse nor better than he was before.

At this point, all I wanted was to sleep in an uninterrupted segment longer than fifteen minutes, but I dropped Squirrel home, and went to get blood work that needed to happen before tomorrow. It turned out they had not been billing insurance properly, so I spent another half hour waiting in lines and getting things straightened out with the lab and my primary provider. Alas, this took so long I couldn't do the same for the pharmacy as they were out top lunch, and given the impressive pain level and the exhaustion standing in the rain for twenty minutes did not appeal. I picked up my research at the library and went home. There were cat messes and people kept phoning me, but I did get a few hours sleep.

Obviously, I'm getting fuck all done tonight.

* Re: The Academy Awards. The Average age of an Academy voter is 67 and they are overwhelmingly white male, which explains a whole lot about how unrepresentative the Oscars are. Insiders were predicting Gravity getting almost everything as the old white men really liked it, even though they knew they should vote for 12 Years a Slave. I was expecting to be furious this morning. Instead I'm just miffed. I'd have rather they got Best Actor (No offense to Mr. McConaughey, who was excellent and my second choice) and Director, but if they were only to get two major awards, I'm okay with it being best film and Best Supporting Actress, plus best adapted screenplay. (They should have gotten cinematography too, but weren't even nominated, despite how brilliantly shot this film was.)

* This all lead me indirectly to fall into the past Academy Award Documentary hole, which is always disappointing. I found a movie I desperately want to see (14-18) which does not exist on DvD, and a collection of other things I wanted to to see, but also don't exist, a few I could order through the library, and a bunch I clearly should go back and see when I have more emotional energy. I made it to the early '80's this time.

* 150-220 people died in a massacre in Syria yesterday. The Syrian government is claiming that the Syrian army helicopters, Syrian Army Artillery, and all those soldiers in Syrian army and intelligence service uniforms that did the killing were really an "armed terrorist gang" despite all the testimony and pictorial evidence to the contrary. Riiiiight. The UN observers are having trouble getting to the sight of the massacre as the Syrian army is still in the process of killing civilians there.
