* Monday we had a picnic at the lake. It had cooled off a little, so wasn't as crowded at all. We got close shade parking. I waded in up to my armpits and another person went with me, but it was slightly too chilly to actually swim. I was an excellent potluck picnic with fruit and snack and conversation. We saw an adolescent rabbit, an interesting bird, and lots of well behaved dogs. After, I dropped two people off, and two of us did some errands, including mailing out ebays, so that is a load off my mind. It was a good day.

* For the record the free Tom's of Maine Cinamint Myrrh and Propolis toothpaste is working out. It is the gentlest, smoothest toothpaste I've ever encountered. It is strongly cinnamon dominant and the mint component is safe. While I am not entirely fond of the way the mint and I'm thinking myrrh interact, it's mild annoyance compared to any flavour of Colgate or Sensadyne one can name, and I do enjoy cinnamon. It may still be worth checking out children's flavours, but if this is as good as it gets, I'm happy.

Just a reminder, if you contact Tom's with toothpaste questions, they will call you back to answer your question and send you a full sized tube to try. I know a lot of us are poor, so it might be worth checking if you want to sample one of their things before buying.

* I keep thinking about Every Heart a Doorway. I was, of course, one of those kids always looking for an exit one way or another. I kept looking long after I knew better. I tried everything kids in books tried. I keep thinking about Nancy's stillness and the way children can and can't disappear. I was a master at silence and stillness and making people forget I was there so I could disappear without being noticed, but my natural state was motion. Stillness and silence and motion were all tactics. Motion kept me safe at recess. You can't harm what you can't catch, but my ability to disappear was safety in so many other circumstances. I'd have hated Nancy's Underworld, for all I understand how it fit her.

Resonance wise? I am very clearly a Mortis sort of person, and belong to logic, though not high logic. I thought a long time about Wicked and Virtue and the thing in the book about Innocence. I think my resonance would have been virtue after all. Dark things can be virtuous for all people like to pretend they can't. I think about how I resisted and why I resisted and the way I resisted and and what I resisted and it was fundamentally about things like truth and integrity and honor on my side and Innocence died hard and early, what could Wickedness have wanted of me?

It was a brilliant book and the end was not what most people would have done, but it was the right thing. Props on representation as well.

* Sunday was frustrating. I could not at first figure out how the fixtures worked, which meant I took apart way more than I needed too. For a brief, shiny moment I actually had a working light, but foolishly decided to use a bulb to test the third fixture. In the middle, Tavy attacked and in the resulting struggle a container of tiny screws when flying, I lost track of which bulb was which, and apparently, the bulb got damaged, which it took another half hour to figure out, which means I need another bulb I have no money for and a big pile of disassembled fish lights to show for three+ hour's work. I am pretty sure I won't have money for second bill when it comes, which means picking sacrifices and devoting a whole evening to eBay soon, but not today. I wrote this whole entry once, but Tavy deleted it with a single paw, because of course.

* TNG Rewatch, Season 6:

- Realm of Fear. They invited Barkley on purpose. Barkley has what looks like a panic attack or something panic attack adjacent in the transport room. (It turn out to be a phobia). I keep thinking about this: that their original response to his mental illness was not kindness and therapy, as one would expect, but group bullying that eventually required command intervention. I have trouble believing that there has been zero improvement in treatment of mental illnesses in the intervening century, and one would think Starfleet officers and the civilians on their ship would have a high incidence of PTSD and trauma just based on things we've seen happen in the series, so how is there no policy, training, and support for crewman with mental illnesses? Yes, our military is shit at this, but one would think there would have been some improvement in societal attitudes and a more compassionate and rational approach generally, but I guess not. After all, they chose to write Diana Troi as terrible at her job for no obvious reason. I am thinking this says some terrible things about Star Fleet and the federation as a whole.

Anyway, I get that they are trying to show confidence in Barkley by including him, but they decide to ignore the whole obvious signs of impending panic attack. It would seem to be kinder and more tactful to read the body language and not push him. I mean, it's the same logic that one uses when picking kids to speak in class. You want everyone to participate and feel safe volunteering, so you let the kids who have more trouble answering for whatever reason (shyness, difficulty with English, difficulty with language processing, intellectual challenge, etc.) get first crack at a question if they raise your hang and you make sure there is enough time for people who take longer to process verbal questions to work out an answer. you always call on those kids first if they do volunteer, because YOU WANT THEM TO SUCCEED. They are more likely to participate in future if when they are called on it turns out well. The goal isn't to shame them in front of their peers and catch them out. The goal is to let them show off what they know. You do not surprise a kid with Autism, or Tourettes, or anxiety (especially if you are spotting tell tale physical signs that they are struggling) or who may not have the English vocabulary to know exactly what you asked with a question when the hand isn't up. It's cruel and traumatizing someone is going to mess up the rest of their day for sure and contributes to an aversion to school. There are plenty of ways to assess if they are actually learning the things, but calling on people really isn't about that. It's about getting them used to being involved in their own learning and in discussions. It's about getting them used to speaking in front of peers. At minimum it keeps them awake, but it's mostly about things like social learning and useful skills they need for the education. That hand up in class is a building block that things like debates, whole class discussion, small group discussion, speeches, oral reports, and group presentations are made of.

My point is, Geordi thinks he's helping, but he really, really isn't. It's pretty well established by this point that Barkley has serious anxiety and a bunch of other related issues. Including him is important, but it should be a setting him up to succeed situation. Instead of pushing him to panic attack in front of a coworker in a way that the whole bridge crew knows about, include him when he's not obviously struggling and in less high stakes situations. Give him support, effective management strategies, and safety net instead of making it super high stakes which is likely to make things worse. Work up to the bigger situations. Exercise some fucking tact. I feel like knowing the people under your command and learning to warning signs of stress etc ought to be a basic command skill thing the way it is in teaching. Read the room. Know the people you have direct charge of. WTF are they teaching them in Starfleet Command School? No wonder they mutiny at the drop of a hat.

Look, I know this is actually about the McGuffin, but that doesn't excuse the systemic problems with the Starfleet Command Training and Counseling system in both ToS and TNG. Barkley tells Troi that he is afraid to get help because having a phobia will kill his career, so at minimum he's internalized negative attitudes from the culture. You know, the same way soldiers are afraid to get help in our military because the stigma really can damage careers there. So the stigma is still a thing in Starfleet culture and presumably Federation culture at large. Good to know the memo about the brain being an organ somehow still hasn't penetrated. Not. It's nice to know they haven't lost 20thcentury desensitization tech somehow, but why doesn't she explain how desensitization works first. Not doing that looks like setting him up to fail.

I do appreciate that Geordi takes Barkley seriously instead of dismissing him, which is progress. Something weird happened with the transporter on the Mystery ship, so all telemetry is important, including observation. I do not want to give the impression tat I think Geordi is some sort of monster here. I'm just saying something is systemically wrong with Starfleet training and services, and that something crops up quite a bit in one for or another in ToS and TNG. The tendency to mutiny under stress or for racist reasons (when Spock or Data is put in charge of a crew), the crappy counseling services throughout TNG and the non-existent services in ToS, command behavior around Barkley in particular, but also some other situations in ToS start to feel like a pattern, the way the lack of barrier protection against unknown biological threats is a pattern. Seriously, how many times has the refusal to take basic chemical and biological contamination precautions bit them in the ass? It feels like a lot.

The psychology on hearing symptoms of a dread disease and believing one has it does seem spot on.

For once, they actually use level five containment and take other afety precautions when it makes sense.

I am glad it worked out in the end, and I do appreciate the way Barkley was shown to be brave and resourceful in the face of his phobia and a generally dangerous life or death situation, thus saving four lives, but the bigger questions about the world building.

- Man of the People. Captain Tallmadge of the Dorian. Snerk. So Captain spy of the Good ship Famous Ridiculously Sexy Bisexual who is eternally young and kills the occasional sexual partner. On purpose or not? You decide, but I think so. The Dorian Grey imagery is apt.

Yet another another abusive slime bucket pretending to be a nice guy targets Diana Troi.

I hate these one when someone is being manipulated this way and this one is extra hard to watch because Marina Sirtis' acting is so good. In fact, when this aired the first time in 1992 I used it to prove to my friends that she really was good and it was the writing that usually sucked when it came to her character. My memory is that next season was when she really got to shine, and yes, at the time we connected the improvement in the writing of her character and the improvement in season seven scripts to Roddenberry dying in '91. Look, ToS was amazing when it was new and so many groundbreaking things happened in it, but I am am aware of both the good things he did (fighting for the inclusion of two main caste characters paid by people of colour, fighting to keep it ensemble cast, making due with next to no budget, trying to do big ideas and social comentary in the face of suits who don't get it), and a whole lot of shitty things too (I've read all sorts of things including Nichelle Nichols' autobiography and there was backstage douchebaggery and some of the crappy things that happened to the women of TNG because of sexist backstage culture and I've a belief that it wouldn't have been so systemic over so long a stretch if Roddenberry had been a feminist ally instead of the way he actually was, his writing and both ToS and TNG are pretty sexist while trying to look feminist rather like a lot of Joss Whedon things are, a whole bunch of his stuff doesn't age well for one reason or another.). I and my friends were perfectly capable of keeping both the ground breaking bits and cool characters that we liked and rational criticisms of Star Trek and Roddenberry in our heads at the same time. The thing we felt was the greatest weakness of TNG (Yes including the huge wasted potential and mishandling of Tasha, and a host of other weaknesses I've written about during this project), was the way Roddenberry's some decisions, particularly his order that their not be conflict between the main characters hampered development and natural flow of story. I'm not saying I want irrational conflict for the sake of conflict, because I hate that most. I'm just saying that it renders TNG flat. The soda (or pop depending on your coast) still tastes fine, but the fizz has gone out of it. What few conflicts there are tend to get muted, or disappeared (whither ensign Ro?). There are debates, which I've written about, like the ones are Data's personhood, or prime directive, etc., but something is missing because emotions and stakes are not allowed to run too high. It's like driving with the parking brake on, a constant drag on acceleration. There are a lot of things we liked about TNG, but there is a reason we thought season seven was the strongest and season six the next strongest, and a reason DS9 is far and away my favorite star Trek.

(I have not seen the new series coming out, but it looks good and I've great hopes for it reigniting my love for the franchise. Voyager got on my nerves for a long list of reasons I don't want to get into here, but which are definitely to do with the writing and the systematic sexism and not even a little the fault of the people doing the acting. Enterprise was so terrible I bailed very early in season one. I hate the reboots because the director fundamentally doesn't get what was good about Star Trek specifically and a long list of bad decisions that have everything to do with the script and nothing to do with the people doing an excellent job playing the characters. I really want to love this new show though and can't wait to see it. This is not an 'I hate everything new' problem. For me this is equivalent to me not liking the Star Wars Prequels, but being completely onboard with TFA and Rogue One. I want to be given something new, but that something new needs to be 1. Fundamentally Star Trek: debates and illustrations of big ideas/societal problems and grand vision for a better future with characters I really enjoy spending time with, and 2. reasonably well written and acted. The rebooted movies completely lack one, and the plots of the two I bothered with had problems so big I couldn't play along anymore).

Anyway, even though this episode is hard for me to watch and taking me places I didn't particularly want to go, they actually gave Ms. Sirtis something to do that she could really work with and I think it's the first episode where we can see the writing shaking free of the parking break. Slowly, tentatively, like the first crocus shoots poking up through melting snow. I say this even though we've had this basic plot twice before with Diana Troi (Empath man using power over people's minds unethically. In one case consensual love interest, in another a stalker/rapist obsessed with Diana, here sucking the life out of her and destabilizing her in the process. I sense a theme.), and ambassador in important negotiations covering up that he is deteriorating at least twice (Sarek and the ambassador in that extremely ableist one a season or two back). The plot is tired and predictable and thus annoying, with the bad psychiatry wandering into my triggery zone, but they are are finally giving Ms. Sirtis something to act. So mixed bag, but with a hope of something better. Something I remember very much enjoying in season seven when the writers let loose.

At least this episode is really clear on how horrible this douchebag is too (repellent and dangerous to women). He calls the women he uses non-consensually and kills "receptacles," realistically dehumanizing language who treats women as literally disposable. It was good to see Picard reacting with appropriate fury and disgust.

Is that crew woman Diana abused while under the asshole's influence okay? Is she afraid of therapy now? Is there a second counselor aboard? Trust me, even though Councillor Troi is in no way responsible for her actions while under the influence of the malevolent empathy, the trauma the Crew woman experienced is still real, and she absolutely would need a different therapist and even then building the trust would be difficult. They do not tell us.

- Suddenly Human. Worf is a feminist! This one is complicated on a bunch of levels. Watching it, I am haunted by the excellent novel Warboy, that explores similar themes around cross cultural kidnap, what is and isn't child abuse, loyalties, agency etc.. This, being '90's network television can't go nearly as far. This is another episode that touches on PTSD.

They are always forcing Picard into fatherhood roles, aren't they? I wish they'd stop treating Picard's preference to be childfree as if it were pathological and funny. That may be the most annoying noise a non-baby/toddler aged human can make. Apparently Talurians love metal. Good to know. Do bedroom doors on a starship not lock?

- Remember Me. This one is hard for me to watch.

- Legacy. Ishara: How did Tasha die? Me: she was fridged because the writer's couldn't figure out what to do with her. Brent Spiner acted the shit out of this one.

- Reunion. More long arc crucial Klingon politics with associated Worf character development. Enter Worf's surprise illegitimate son and associated issues.

- Future Imperfect. I have always felt that it is a brutal incitement of Riker that the love of his life is a holodeck program.

* So not only was I up at entirely the wrong time of morning for an extra Doctor appointment, but I had an extra adventurous drive with a car that kept stalling out as it was running on fumes. All to see the wrong Doctor, one who is not familiar with my multiple filing cabinets worth of medical history. So I'm shaved to the bone financially with a wait and see on my lungs. I came home, ate, then coughed 'til I threw up, and now can't get enough air. At least the window washers were hot men, one of whom was willing to pull our screens for the procedure instead of skipping us.

* Fear the Walking Dead: Look, I know it sounds stupid to quibble about unrealistic things in a zombie show, but there's a difference between asking me to accept one big premise (zombies) in an otherwise fairly realistic setting. It's another thing to throw in lots of little details that are not related to that big fictional premise which I know contradict reality. Skye's father had a yacht. Not one as big as the one in the show, but large enough. Those things are gas guzzlers. You need to refuel them, like, a lot. It's not like my soldier's dad's sailboat with a back up motor where you don't need that much fuel with friendly winds. With a boat like they have on the show you basically have to fuel up every day or two depending on how far and fast you are going, currents, and electricity use. Again, I don't know that model, but I haven't seen them fuel up or plug in when they were docked and they are meant to be going fast and pretty much constantly. I'm assuming this boat has way bigger fuel tanks, but it also clearly has a much larger motor. I've no clue the specs on a big yacht like that, but I've been worrying constantly about fuel every episode waiting for it to run low, and it bugs me that they didn't seem to fuel up in episode 2. Skye's dad fueled up every time they docked, just in case, because you are pretty much fucked if you run out of fuel on a large body of water like the Columbia or the Puget Sound, or all Deities help you on the Ocean. I rather assume this is what did the folks in on the Dawn of the Dead reboot. Run out of gas, you have options. Run out in the Ocean when there is no coast guard anymore to rescue you? *shudder* The fact that no one's even mentioned fuel nags at me constantly while watching it.

Similarly, what's up with Nick's addiction? Is Strand feeding him rationed pills off camera? Because otherwise, the fuck happened to his withdraw? I wish they'd clarify this, because I am constantly staring at nick when he's on screen and thinking about RL addicts I've known. Admittedly, I've never been there for acute withdraw, but I remember the way D's hands would shake her first week or two out of heroin detox back when we were both 15. (we used to play a lot of cards. Helped take her mind off it. I didn't use and was restful company back then, willing to listen and talk about anything, but not a use trigger, so I was a good person to be around for where she was right then). I remember how generally shaky various of by friends have been after we got them back from a bad one.

Look, I love character based ambiguity, and am cool with endings of books and movies that can be read more than one way, but with these real world details, I desperately need some disambiguation, because it's messing with my suspension of disbelief. I can suspend for zombies OR I can suspend for magically refilling fuel tanks OR I can suspend for some sort of weird withdraw situation, though the withdraw is actually harder to suspend for than the zombies, because no one is really pretending zombies aren't absurd. (Mutated rabies in a live host that burns the host out is less absurd. Walking Dead infectious zombies are in the realm of right out). So I really need to know what the fuel situation is and a shot explaining Nick's drug situation. I can see Strand having drugs on hand as I rather assumed his lack of sleep was cocaine related, but I shouldn't have to work to honey pot this when they could spend like thirty seconds showing us WTF.

I am also finding the characters frustrating. How hard is it to grasp at this point with previous near death experiences behind them, that wandering away from the group without saying where you are going is a bad idea? The ep.2 family TOLD them about noise. Do they have any survival instincts at all? At least Carl and Sophia had the excuse of ages in single digits, and I was impatient with it then. No one has an excuse like that here and the wait for the teens to get their heads out their asses is making me cranky.

* During my heat confinement, I read Point of Knives and watched the Theory of Everything. Point of Knives is a novella bridging point of Hopes and Point of dreams. It has a neat little mystery in it and has a nicely handled gay romance element showing how we get from "too bad he's straight" in the first novel and what I am told will be a full relationship in Dreams. The book is spare as the heavy world building was deftly folded into the first one and the mystery is less epic, but I liked it well enough to read in two sittings.

Theory of Everything was quite good and I appreciated it addressing agency for people with disabilities and the issue of sexuality. So often our culture desexualizes people with disability and this doesn't. It was also beautifully shot and acted. Still, Imitation Game spoke to me more intensely. It had a much tighter plot and theme. Not inappropriately, the "Theory of everything" was a bit unfocused and sprawling. I suspect it is a matter of taste, and I honestly think they were both very good.

* They are charging all six of Freddie Gray's murderers. How sad is it that the actual charging of murderers is so rare that it is treated as some sort of victory. Imagine how much safer the streets would be if we just arrested all the known murderers instead of covering the murders up as is the custom in this country.

We need a special prosecutor system in every state of this country, with separate investigators and prosecuting attorneys. Without it, murderers will keep getting away with it.

* I had a huge number of things I was meant to do to day, but I woke up very sick. I've been manageable sick for a couple of weeks, but today it ramped up on me. Luckily, Greenwick cancelled, so i got an extra two hours of feverish sleep. I needed more, but I'd arranged to pick up papers for yet another exhausting hoop the HOA is making us jump, and I'd promised to pick them up in the afternoon, if they'd be kind enough to prep them for me. I dragged myself out and managed it, but that was all I could handle. I ended up spending a few hours on the sofa watching Sleepy Hollow, True Detective, and Gotham, then attempted a nap, which was all fever dreams and endless waking. I watched the first couple episodes of Master's of Sex, but was able to drag myself out and feed myself properly at that point. I'm still feeling crap. I am incredibly lucky I spaced my flu shot yesterday, as that would have been so much worse.

An apology is nice, but no way am I trusting them until I see a whole lot of action. They have spent decades ignoring the trans community and throwing us under the bus at every opportunity. They have repeatedly claimed they would include Trans folk, but every single time it was just PR and as soon as the spotlight turned away, they fired the trans new hires meant to represent us and went back to working against our best interests. So, yes, nice apology, but it means nothing until they act on this change of heart in a sustained and comprehensive way, because a few pretty words don't erase a lifetime of of repeated, deliberate betrayal.

* The library has the "Forbidden Hollywood" collection of films, from the period when the code was in place, but not really enforced. (Known as "Pre-code" films). I'd been reading/hearing about these films for ages, but hadn't had the chance to watch. Mostly the subject matter isn't my thing, so I've given myself permission to skip ones that don't much interest me. Waterloo Bridge was fascinating, especially given all I know about James Whale, but I tried explaining my reaction last night and couldn't get it clear in words.

Today's selection was the uncensored "Baby Face." I've never seen the censored version and I expected to skip it after a few scenes, because the summery was very similar to that of "Red headed Woman," but the first few scenes grabbed me and I ended up watching it all the way through. Barbara Stanwick's performance fascinated me. She didn't show much, but she had this way of projecting a cynical weariness with masculine nonsense that I had a certain sympathy for. The character was brutal a sort of indictment of the femme fatal and female ambition and materialism that was surface misogynistic, while at the same time, indicting the man's world of the 1930's that gave women so few options and out lets for their ambition. For all the moments that didn't work, where the acting and/or dialog were stilted, it had a power to it. I think a lot of that power came from that tension, that capturing of the circumstances that made the main character who she was as well as the damage she did. I could never forget that the men chose too. They had agency in their choices. She didn't force them to throw everything away. Most of them were pretty clearly taking advantage what they thought was her vulnerability to use her for their own ends and simply didn't know how to cope when it turned out she had been using them back. Which doesn't make her a nice person or an ethical person, but neither were the men. At least what was happening was mutually consensual. I am of the opinion that often this sort of thing wasn't RL. I kept thing of "The Apartment." I kept thinking of what I've seen of "Mad Men," which feels like the other half of the conversation about sexism and gendered power in business environments in the middle of the twentieth century. The movie was Nietzsche themed, interesting for a movie made in the early '30's in so many ways, but I kept thinking about Ayn Rand. So much of this movie was about self interest above everything else in a very Randian way. One of the minor characters was even named something like Gault. It seems to me the main character was very much the sort of heroine Ayn Rand and her followers praise(d) and encourage people to become. I have a whole lot of conflicting thoughts about the ending that I'm not convinced I could word with enough nuance. Was it a pleasant or easy movie to watch? No. I do think it was an important one though. It is the platonic ideal of the certain people look at women with ambition and will continue to likely long after I am dead. This is the seed of Evita, of the very gendered attacks on Hillary Clinton in the '90's, on and on in art and politics. This movie asks questions about power structures and gender we are still fighting about in the 21st century.

* It’s kind of funny. For all that certain aspects of Conan the Barbarian are of their time, it holds up remarkably well. Sure, the spirit attack effects are cheesey as is the snake transformation generally, but most of the effects being analog, they really hold up. Sure the plot is cheese, but it’s good cheese. Some of the shots and visual textures are gorgeous, and they do such a good job of creating a sense that there is rich life going on in the world, even if what we are seeing is less than a minute of extras doing whatever. It is grotty in the way a New Hope is grotty. It’s a lived in sort of fantasy.

And yet the sequel is so bad, despite having Grace Jones being awesome all over the scenes she is in. It was incredibly disappointing to be as a child (Except Grace Jones. Seriously, I loved Grace Jones and would watch crap like the Merv Griffin Show if she was going to be on. I still remember her talking about answering the door to missionaries in the nude and taking off her breast plate… she was wearing this amazing deco breast plate in the interview which I coveted… She took off her breastplate to illustrate some point about it to the horror of the host. She was one of a kind amazing). It had this cool cast and this great Grace Jones character, and it was deadly dull and not visually interesting. watching it back to back with the original, the sparseness of it stands out. It’s too clean and glitzy. It lacks the medieval music that was so prominent in the original’s sound track. There’s long stretches of nothing with falls flat comic relief and boring action punctuating it. There is nothing in it that is really fun to watch except the scene with the Grace Jones character and the villagers.

I stand by my original opinion in the ‘80’s that they should have just made a character about the Grace Jones character having adventures and being awesome. hell, I’d pay theater prices to watch that if they made it right now with decades older Grace Jones.

* I periodically watch silent films. My interest is mostly historical/anthropological. Along with the early talkies, they are way problematic in a whole lot of ways as far as racial and gender politics, but they also often talk about class in ways we don't generally and you can watch them in the process of inventing all sorts of techniques and visual vocabulary we take for granted. One of the things I've noticed watching the current batch is the difference between movies they made about themselves vs. the movies we make about them. there is so much physical affection between the men, particularly in movies about the military. They hug, they cuddle, they touch each other casually. We erase that, because to modern eyes that is coded entirely homoerotic, while for them it could mean any kind of affection between men. Sometimes it is pretty clearly platonic. Sometimes, even though the script is hetero-normative, the male leads clearly have waaay more chemistry with each other than with the female leads. Either way, there is something beautiful about that, the affectionate rough housing, the joyful hugging, the casual affection of the men, the way one man might hold another in a death scene like the one in Wings. (Wings kind of blows me away just generally. They had to invent a lot of those camera and special effects techniques. In those pilot close ups? Those are the actual pilots flying real airplanes doing their own camera work. While flying an actual plane. I repeat, flying an actual plane, acting, and doing their own camera work. At once. None of them died, though a stunt pilot got really hurt in one of the crashes they filmed with actual planes. The whole film is like that. They did massive battle scenes with 2-3thousand real soldiers and real explosions. Before this film, aerial photography was barely a thing. They invented all but the most basic technique while trying to figure out how to film this.)

* The art cinema is actually showing Belle, so I dragged my barely functional ass out to watch it It was worth it. This movie was made with so much love and talent. Seriously, this movie had the look of something that everyone involved must have cared about. The acting was lovely and skilled, which is likely a given if you look at the cast list. It was beautifully shot and lit, sensitively directed, and whoever did the costumes really knew their stuff and did period appropriate things with ribbons you hardly ever see. The script didn't shy away from some things I did not expect them to reference and/or tackle. The people making this were well aware of period tropes that modern people pretend never happened, like the thing where people would be painted with black servants as status symbols. Art history books crop those pictures or light them incorrectly to erase the black people so they don't have to confront colonialism and the ugly power dynamics those portraits represent. This movie used those pictures as a powerful way of highlighting those issues without resorting to heavy handed dialog. I love the way this movie didn't lampshade a whole lot of class, gender, etc. issues while keeping the issue of race and the dignity and sanctity of human life in the center. There was so much going on in this movie, yet it never felt over packed. I love that Dido Elizabeth Belle got to be a complete human being instead of a symbol in this movie. That famous RL portrait of her with her finger to her cheek has fascinated me since I first saw it because of how richly her sense of humor and intelligence show through. So many portraits of that period show pretty women as ciphers, but her personality was so strong it rises above period portraiture conventions to speak across the centuries to the modern heart. So portion of that made it into the film, though I'm not sure any film could captures all of her.

Yes, Bring tissues.
